Charlie Day said in an appearance on the Smartless podcast earlier this year that he doesn’t think It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia will run for much longer, teasing that season 16—the show had just finished airing its 15th season at the time—could be the show’s last. Speaking with The A.V. Club recently, It’s Always Sunny’s Danny DeVito went a half-step further by teasing not only that a 16th season will happen, but that it will begin filming within a few months.

In the video interview, which you can see below, DeVito says that season 16 of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia will start filming this winter and will most likely air in the fall. Unlike Day, he does not let on whether or not he thinks this will be it for the show, but we’re not going to stop anyone from reading into the way he answered the question. Does it seem like he’s hiding something? Does it seem like he’s not hiding something?

In 2020, when FX renewed It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia for season 15, various people involved—both at the network and on the show itself—suggested that the series could just run forever and that the core cast and creators would never run out of ideas. It’s safe to assume that that’s what FX would prefer, but (barring some kind of major shift to the premise) they kind of need Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito involved to some extent… or at least two or three out of the five. It’s not like they haven’t done that before.

We’ll know more about the future of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia as we get closer to this 16th season actually airing—or when FX decides to say something more official.

What’s up with that first paragraph? Am I still waking up or is it written weird?

Yeah they crammed a lot into each sentence with superfluous info that could have been omitted or added in separate sentences. We know Danny Devito is “It’s Always Sunny’s Danny Devito”.

“There’s still no word on if that season will be the last one, though”Why would there be?

The shown is definitely wrapping up. If 16 isn’t the end, 17 would be. Starting with Mac (or maybe sooner with Dennis leaving and returning), each recent season has had a dedicated story arc about one member’s personal growth/discovery and their relationship to Frank. I predict that the trend will continue with season 16 being about Dee, or if season 13’s Dennis-centric plot didn’t count, Dee & Dennis. If they get to a season 17, I think it would be Frank’s season to say goodbye to side characters or pull off one last amazing scheme before dying.

wasn’t it renewed through season 18? I mean, it probably is time to wrap things up anyway, but still…

    • nogelego-av says:

I would guess that means it’s renewed if they want to keep making it. Not sure what Charlie Day has going on, but I doubt AP Bio will be back (sadly, as it got straight out bonkers in its last season) and fuck Dee, but Mack has that show about hanging out with Ryan Reynolds that might make this the last. It probably should be – that FX funded-vacation in Ireland was really not great.

AP Bio got cancelled. Because they put it behind the peacock pay wall.Olsen had The Mick, which was great. Now I think she’s got an HBO show. Two if you count Curb.

        • nogelego-av says:

Wasn’t she on one episode of Curb? Almost 20 years ago?

She’s played Cheryl’s sister for years. Not a huge role, she’s skipped entire seasons. She recently had a little arch where she dated Larry.edit: 7 episodes over twenty years according to imdb

Not sure what Charlie Day has going on,Charlie Day is set to make his directorial debut with a movie called El Tonto starring himself, Kate Beckinsale, Jason Sudeikis, Edie Falco, John Malkovich, the late Ray Liotta, Adrien Brody, Ken Jeong, and Jimmi Simpson.

i thought they decided to bring back AP Bio to air like next summer. Was it cancelled yet again (this time before even going into production)?

  • berty2001-av says:

Think you could lose 1 or 2 of the cast and continue – though the season with Dennis popping in and out didn’t really work. But feel that was because they were trying to fit the story around him going missing. if they just decided to write stories around 3/4 of the group each week, instead of trying to fit them all in, think it might freshen it up

They’ve got that podcast, so we know the three creators are still hanging out regularly. And Rob McElhenney needs cash to funnel into Wrexham AFC. I bet it goes a while longer.
