David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will let someone else handle a Game Of Thrones spin-off

HBO may yet find a way to keep Game Of Thrones alive even after it goes the way of so many of its characters. Programming president Casey Bloys has been teasing the idea of a spin-off for a while now, and, according to Deadline, co-creator David Benioff told an audience at SXSW yesterday that the network “might well do” one. However, Benioff also noted that he and his cohort D.B. Weiss are likely going let other people have a go at tackling George R.R. Martin’s world. “I think its better for them to get new blood in with new visions,” he said.

This echoes what Benioff told The Hollywood Reporter back in October. He explained at the time: “I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us this is it.” For what it’s worth, Bloys said in that same story that he recognized Benioff and Weiss might need a break post-Thrones, but added that “it would certainly be nice to have their involvement in some way.”

After making us watch a big block of ice for a bit, HBO announced last week that the 7-episode seventh season of the series will premiere July 16. The following final season is set to have just six episodes.
