Hot off the success of Turning Red, Disney and Pixar have announced that its next movie, Elemental, will be released next June. The animation giant also released concept art (above) for the new film, directed by Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur) and produced by Denise Realm (The Good Dinosaur, Cars 2).

As Pixar described the story on Twitter: “In a city where fire, water, land, & air residents live together, a fiery young woman & a go-with-the-flow guy will discover something elemental: How much they have in common.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the unlikely pair depicted in the concept art by Sohn are called Ember and Wade, and their adventure is loosely based on the director’s childhood growing up in New York. Sohn said in a statement:

“My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx. We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to Elemental.”

If you’re wondering how this film might compare to Avatar: The Last Airbender (another element-based animated classic), Sohn only had this intriguing tidbit to add, per THR: “Our story is based on the classic elements—fire, water, land and air. Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”

Up before Elemental is Lightyear, Pixar’s first origin story/prequel to a previous franchise (Toy Story). That film will also be the studio’s first return to theaters since the COVID-19 pandemic bumped its releases to streaming on Disney+. Disney and Pixar fans will no doubt relish the chance to see a brand new, original film on the big screen when Elemental rolls around next summer.

Elemental hits theaters on June 16, 2023.

Peter Sohn (The Last Dinosaur) and produced by Denise Realm (The Good Dinosaur, Cars 2). Was the correct movie listed the second time, but not the first here? Otherwise this guy’s last most relevant work is a non-Disney or Pixar 1977 film (it’s not). Also, I really couldn’t get through The Good Dinosaur, so not sure how excited I’m going to be for this.

    • razzle-bazzle-av says:

Sohn directed The Good Dinosaur. It was awwwwwwful. Denise Realm does not appear to exist at Pixar. Denise Ream, however, was a producer on the aforementioned disaster and Cars 2. Yeah, I’m not seeing much to get excited about either.

My daughter really enjoys The Good Dinosaur. But she also prefers Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride to the original Lion King, so, idk.

    • schmowtown-av says:

I remember that Good Dinosaur was a behind the scenes wreck and had to be re-written multiple times. Fingers crossed that was a fluke and they have a more cohesive vision for this one

I feel like The Good Dinosaur should have been made for me because it had all the elements of something I should like but it was truly terrible!

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

The Good Dinosaur is probably the least impactful Pixar film I’ve ever seen.

    • jodyjm13-av says:

To me, The Good Dinosaur was about 10 minutes of great scenes sprinkled throughout 80 minutes of generic coming-of-age melodrama. Watchable, but that’s about the best I could say for it.

Not sure that’d be kid friendly though…

  • mmmhotpie-av says:

Peter Sohn is an amazing talent. Fun fact: he does a lot of voice over work for ancillary Pixar characters as well (most recently the dog from Buzz Lightyear).

(Can we stop with these one-word titles?)

“What if this abstract concept could walk and talk and quip” continues to get progressively fucking stupider.

I loved Inside Out and also appreciated Soul, but like…while this sounds whimsical on paper, Pixar, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll translate to a good movie.

Also this feels like it could just be a rehash of Zootopia somewhat.

    • ladyopossum-av says:

At least Inside Out and Soul had somewhat creative worlds in which the anthropomorphic creatures lived.  This one seems to just have them live in a human-type city with clothes.  Ugh, how can a studio that can be so creative at times also be so lazy?

      • refinedbean-av says:

The best part of Soul was the super-abstract afterlife (beforelife?) that they crafted, and Picasso-like higher beings and such. And then they went back to the world and I was like “Oh. Good.”

      • g-off-av says:

My hot take is that Inside Out might very well be Pixar’s best film.

I try not to judge a movie/book/work of art by how it sounds when I reduce it to its most basic premise, because I think (outside of the extremes) a work’s premise is secondary to its execution when it comes to excellence.

That said, I’m definetly picking up what you are laying down here. And I’ll add to it that there’s something about “this abstract concept/fundemental force of existence functions like a modern meritocracy where today’s knowledge workers would succeed” is starting to grate on me.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

My exact thoughts upon reading this. Another one in the “Inside Out and Soul” category for sure. Next Pixar film is going to have protagonists named Sunshine and Rain. Just wait.

      • refinedbean-av says:

Here, off the top of my head. Pixar presents: Orbit. When a timid and lonely meteor is caught in the pull of a large and gregarious planet, the delicate bureaucracy of the solar system is threatened! But can these two learn how to co-exist before it’s too late?Voice cast: Aidy Bryant as the meteor, Jean Smart as the planet, and featuring Drew Carey as Boss Sun.

      or captain planet.

I guess that’s just what happens when an animation studio demands to be taken seriously, but doesn’t once dare to make a movie primarily aimed at adults?

I’d rather see a sequel to A Bug’s Life than this.

    • the-nsx-was-only-in-development-for-4-years-av says:

A Bug’s Life continues to be the most under-appreciated Pixar movie of all time.

      • synonymous2anonymous-av says:

100%. And with the technology that has been developed since then, it could really have an astounding look.

  • msaturn-av says:

I would absolutely have believed this was a disney/pixar parody. They’ve really gotten into a rut with this whimsical lesson learning via talking sludge/cloud in a shirt thing.

  • butterbattlepacifist-av says:

For a long time, they kept doing riffs on Toy Story, and pretty much all of them were good. Now they just keep trying to do Inside Out, and it seems like diminishing returns. There are outliers, of course, but this does not get me real excited

Still would have loved to have seen Turning Red on the big screen instead of Lightyear but, politics. I’m not planning of forgiving Lightyear for existing, even if it’s decent.

  • g-off-av says:

So they decided to get the team together from two of Pixar’s worst movies? What could go wrong?!

This character looks too much like Calcifer with a dash of Flame Princess.

  • dreamexpander-av says:

Getting ideas from myths and legends is a valuable legacy of the Walt Disney Company that is now reflected in this project of Pixar. It seems that this time Pixar intends to use the same method. Pixar’s history shows that its films often deal with human psychology. So I guess Disney’s mythical legacy and Pixar storytelling have made a great movie. Please read more in an article I wrote here:https://dreamexpander.com/elemental-the-latest-feature-of-disney-and-pixar/
