You’d be forgiven for forgetting that Disney was cooking up a third Tron movie at the moment; the last major news from the sci-fi franchise came back in early 2023, when it was revealed that, somehow, Disney had fumbled the bag of holding on to director Joseph Kosinski—fresh off smashing box office records with Top Gun: Maverick—for a sequel to his Tron: Legacy. Now, the company has released its first picture from the Jared Leto-starring sequel, Tron: Ares, revealing that it’s looking… kinda spooky?

Like, look at that Goth-ass computer program, looking all black and neon red over there. You can practically imagine him having “File Corrupted” tattooed across his forehead, right? (Although, to be clear, we have no idea if the character in question is Leto’s new computer program, Ares, or possibly a villain for the film. He kind of looks like Rinzler from the second movie, we note, as the only human beings left on the planet who retain any knowledge of the plot of Tron: Legacy.)

Ares is being directed by Joachim Rønning, who’s done some fairly anonymous sequel work for Disney in the past. (He’s been tapped for both a Maleficent sequel and a latters-day Pirates Of The Caribbean, if that helps you grasp where he’s at.) The logline for the film makes it sound like a bit of a subversion of the typical Tron formula: Instead of a human being getting sucked into the Grid, the film will apparently center on Ares, who is un-digitized into the real world, where he’ll presumably get a job cranking out ugly art and bad-looking comedy “bits” like the rest of his AI brethren.

Tron: Ares is currently in production, and aiming at a 2025 release date.
