At this most charitable time of year, when dreams come true and Disney drains our pockets of money, we must look ahead to future Disney products that we can soon enjoy. Why dream of that pony when you could dream of all the fantastic programming coming to Disney+? Disney was thinking the same thing.

Earlier today, the company tweeted out a preview of its upcoming offerings, and, yup, it’s another year of remakes and Marvel and Star Wars spin-offs to keep the content mill a-churning for another year. And as was the case last year, a big year awaits, as the previews for Ahsoka, Loki, Secret Invasion, and Peter Pan & Wendy can attest.

Despite the undeniable mark that the Santa Clauses series made on our society, The Mandalorian and Loki are undeniably the breadwinners in the Disney+ lineup. However, there are a few new projects to whet the appetites of Disney adults from sea to shining sea and beyond. Most importantly, we get a quick shot of Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka lowering her Jedi hood and a preview from a new episode of the Up animated series entitled Dug Days: Carl’s Date. Apparently, there’s been an Up series on Disney+ since 2021.

The most interesting of the lot remains Peter Pan & Wendy, the latest Disney re-imagining by director David Lowery. Lowery has been through this process before, turning out one of the better remakes in recent Disney history with Pete’s Dragon. However, his work on The Green Knight makes his return to high fantasy all the more alluring. If only it were getting a theatrical release.

It all builds to what everyone has been waiting for: Tom Hiddleston in a tuxedo. Loki is back, and he’s ditching the horns. At least this will give everyone a new batch of images to share whenever Hiddleston’s name enters Bond conversation again.

I bet this is a big day for idiots who like watching shitty TV shows and movies.

Holy shit, not a single even halfway striking moment of color in any of those trailers. What the fuck is going on with Disney cinematography.

To be fair, all the live action shots are either in dark, half-light, overcast or inside.
      Sometimes all at once.

It’s incredible how quickly shooting on The Volume™ has gone from an incredible new innovation (and so vital to continued production in COVID times) to the biggest liability for any new Disney products. There’s a set visual template you’re stuck with if you shoot on that soundstage…and it ain’t a good one.

The thing is, Star Trek: Discovery season 4 and Strange New Worlds season 1 both filmed on a Volume-style virtual set, and the cinematography was stunning. I have no clue why the Disney+ shows look so muddy in comparison.

Sometimes all at once.See; Black Panther 2.

It’s possible these are not yet fully color corrected/graded yet.

Any of you guys remember the cinematography of The Long Night? When those dark blobs stabbed all those other dark blobs, while a couple dark blobs flew around in a dark grey void. That’s was pretty wild, right?

  • marshalgrover-av says:

I guess they forgot they also have a Muppet show coming…or Bob Iger told them to leave it out.

I’m glad Owen Wilson is back. The first two episodes of Loki s1 were quite delightful.

Disney+ is in competition with Netflix about who has the worst offering. But at least Netflix seems to understand better what the public wants even if it’s shit. Disney+ does not.

Just finished Andor, which was really, really good. I still have no hope for Ahsoka. Not even that excited about Mandalorian.Since the first season of Loki is still the only thing that’s done any work toward setting up Kang, I am looking forward to that.

    • bewareofbob-av says:

The difference is that Andor was an actual story, whereas the Mandalorian very quickly devolved into “HEY REMEMBER THAT GUY??!? LOOK KIDS, IT’S CGI MARK HAMILL (APPLAUSE)” And Ahsoka looks to very much be in the same mold, which makes sense given that it’s Dave Filoni’s baby.

      • scortius-av says:

If very quickly is 2 seasons then I guess.

      • erictan04-av says:

How are the episodes of The Mandalorian not stories? Sure, they spend way too much time and effort satisfying the median fan base, but it works. Andor may not fit in this mold, but it isn’t exactly must-see TV either. There are many much better shows than the over-praised Andor.

    • dr-memory-av says:

I will never be against Rosario Dawson getting regular work, but Andor set a standard that is going to be very, very hard for any of the rest of the SW shows to reach and it’s hard to be optimistic.

his work on The Green Knight makes his return to high fantasy all the more alluring… if you hate fantasy, cinema, and entertainment. God what a waste of talent and potential that film was. I’ve not been so disappointed in a movie since Crystal Skull.

Man,  I watched every trailer for that movie and read several articles about it, as much as I could without spoiling the whole movie, and I still have no idea what the story is supposed to be beyond a vaguely Arthurian tale.

How are they gonna do more Dug Days without Ed Asner???

    • scortius-av says:

Yeah wondering if he tracked more dialogue for it.  The shorts are all delightful.

They were really delightful, but I felt like a) the first set ended on a lovely note and b) it wouldn’t be right to do more without him. Maybe they do have more dialogue, though; we’ll see.

  • drkschtz-av says:

Kewl, can you release one of them before god damn Spring of 2023?

  • soylent-gr33n-av says:

Apparently, there’s been an Up series on Disney+ since 2021.Yes, it was one of the last things Ed Asner worked on.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

I’ll just keep dreaming about the pony, thanks.
