If anyone’s going to get away with turning their vaccination into a huge spectacle, it’s national treasure Dolly Parton. On Tuesday, the country legend allowed everyone to sigh in relief, sharing a video of herself getting the first dose of the Moderna vaccine—while wearing a sparkly gown and a matching mask, because Dolly doesn’t play. And for those who are still terrified of getting a vaccine that’ll likely prevent you and others from getting the deathly virus, Parton has some words for you: “To all you cowards out there, don’t be such a chickensquat! Get out there and get your shot!”

Parton even sang a vaccine version of “Jolene,” changing her iconic song’s lyrics to, “Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, I’m begging of you please don’t hesitate. Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, ’cause once you’re dead, then that’s a bit too late.”

Not only has Parton been encouraging people who are eligible for the COVID vaccines to get it, but a preliminary report on the Moderna vaccine by The New England Journal Of Medicine credits her as one of the donors to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, helping fund COVID research. Parton had also made the announcement on social media back in April 2020, saying she was donating $1 million to Vanderbilt “towards that research and to encourage people that can afford it to make donations.”

Saint Dolly has been actively trying to keep us all alive and healthy, so please listen to her! Get the vaccine as soon as you’re eligible to do so! And if you’re not sure where you can get it, you can find a location on Find A Shot.

My kids get a book in the mail every month from Dolly Parton’s reading nonprofit, and every book has a picture of her on the back flap. My toddler now shouts “Dolly!” whenever we finish a book. It’s a relief that she isn’t a secret nazi or anything.

I can’t say enough good stuff about that nonprofit.   I donate to it every chance I get.  https://imaginationlibrary.com/

I know it operates differently in different states — here in Tennessee (except for Dolly’s home county, where she foots the bill for everything) Imagination Library handles the logistics of selecting, purchasing and shipping the books. The cost is split by the state and some sort of local agency in each county — a library, a civic club, or a stand-alone non-profit. So, here in Tennessee, you’d want to seek out whatever the local non-profit partner is in your county and give to them. If you donate through the Imagination Library website, it gives you the option to “select a local affiliate” to target with your donation. Trivia fact, which I may have posted here before: A child who is signed up from birth gets a total of 60 books. Fifty-nine of those are selected by a blue-ribbon panel of educators. But the first book a child receives is always “The Little Engine That Could,” because it was Dolly’s favorite when she was that age.

That last sentence was perhaps my favorite in a post that is full of delightful information. Always great when a celebrity puts a personal touch on their foundations and shows they actual care rather than just doing what is expected of them due to wealth/fame etc. And this seems like a nice balance between more anonymous charities (nothing wrong with those but sometimes I think using a celeb name can give a foundation more juice) and the other end, where celebs make charity work all about them. Also, that’s a great book about perseverance which of course is something Dolly Parton knows all about.

She’s pretty much the exact opposite of a secret nazi.

If Dolly Parton had been born a couple of thousand years ago, she would have been deified.  Many wars would have been fought in her name.  Because we are assholes that don’t deserve her.

The statues in the church of the Blessed Dolly, with their um, bountiful assets, would be definitely nicer to look at, at least.

Cue Laura Ingraham’s rant about the radical liberal entertainment industrial complex and Dolly’s lack of talent (with graphics of her from the ‘70s with her giant hair/wig styles in the corner of the screen).

I think Dolly is above the stupid-wing too, because she’s also a beloved figure in country music and is openly Christian – except unlike the stupid-wing people, she’s actually someone who does the whole ‘love thy neighbor’ thing.I don’t think you can attack Dolly without it backfiring hard, because everyone knows she’s probably the best American right now.

I agree, she’s universally loved.  Probably the only person who can unite the entire country.

The crazy-right tried to vilify Mr. Rogers. They’re fully capable of hating anyone.

She is the kind of Christian that all the other Christians should be. No judging, accepting people as they are, loving people and not even caring about the sin because she knows we all do it and probably she doesn’t consider it a sin to do most of the things that fake Christians think are a sin. Also, she doesn’t shove it in your face all the time or try to get people to convert. And she doesn’t hoard money. Also, she sings like an angel and I cry every time I hear her sing I Will Always Love You.

I’d say Dolly for President but honestly that doesn’t seem rightCan we elect an Earth Emperor?  If so Dolly should at least be in the running

It is worth noting the word “chickensquat” is perfectly representative of the rhetorical tightrope Mizzz Parton so masterfully walks.

Props to Parton for having such a fancy gown that already has the partitions for the vaccine. I know that’s just the style of the design, but it also shows how Dolly is like a few steps ahead of most other people even in the realm of practical yet upscale fashion choices.

  • operasara-av says:

I love that she’s wearing a fabulous vaccine ready dress.  It’s designed to make her look great while she gets her jab.
