UPDATE, March 17: The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has decided to not remove Dolly Parton’s name off its ballot of nominees, after she decided to bow out.

Its statement reads:

All of us in the music community have seen Dolly Parton’s thoughtful note expressing her feeling that she has not earned the right to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to her incredible talent as an artist, her humility is another reason Dolly is a beloved icon by millions of fans around the world.

From its inception, Rock & Roll has had deep roots in Rhythm & Blues and Country music. It is not defined by any one genre, rather a sound that moves youth culture. Dolly Parton’s music impacted a generation of young fans and influenced countless artists that followed. Her nomination to be considered for induction into to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame followed the same process as all other artists who have been considered.

Dolly’s nomination, along with the other 16 artists for the class of 2022, was sent out earlier this month to our 1,200 general ballot voters, the majority of whom are artists themselves, for consideration for induction at our ceremony.

We are in awe of Dolly’s brilliant talent and pioneering spirit and are proud to have nominated her for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Dolly Parton is on the list of nominees for this year’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Voting ends on April 29 and Parton is currently in the top five nominees, coming at fourth place, with Duran Duran taking the lead. But Parton, ever the legend, has decided to opt out of consideration because she doesn’t believe she “earned that right.”

In a post shared on social media, the iconic performer wrote:

“Dolly here! Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.

I do hope that the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again—if I’m ever worthy. This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do! My husband is a total rock ‘n’ roll freak, and has always encouraged me to do one. I wish all the nominees good luck and thank you again for the compliment. Rock on!”

Parton is certainly worthy of the honor and it’s a wonder why it took so long for her to be in the running for a spot in Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in the first place. But, at least, the silver lining here is her promise of “a great rock ‘n’ roll album.” As one of the best songwriters in the industry, Parton is definitely capable of making the genre switch seamlessly.

In other Parton news, she recently released a companion album for novel Run Rose Run (co-written with James Patterson), that she described in a tweet as a “collection of musical stories about dreamers and their journeys.”

Goddamn it Dolly, stop being the best person ever.  The rock purists won’t complain as much and she looks like a good sport letting someone else get it.  Boy I wish more country people like her and not Charlie Daniels.

Yeah, I’m not sure the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has earned Dolly Parton.

  • bensavagegarden-av says:

She just doesn’t want to run the risk of being selected and having to go to Cleveland.

    • doobie1-av says:

This is as plausible as anything. She’s so courteous and deferential that it’s easy not to notice that her objection doesn’t really make sense. “Rocking” hasn’t been a requirement for the Hall of Fame in decades, she has, objectively, sold millions more records than several other nominees, and what vote is she worried about splitting? Is she infringing on Beck’s natural constituency?

      • baronzima-av says:

While I agree with you that rocking has not been a necessary requirement to date, Dolly wields huge influence, and perhaps she is of a similar view that it should be.

        • kanedajones-av says:

ya thats what I got from this. right down to her suggestion that it be re considered after she makes a rock album.

Rock as a specific genre has dwindled and its a shame the museum has been so shameless in its attempt to stay relevant.

      • jmyoung123-av says:

I believe she is referring to the other women on the ballot.

        • doobie1-av says:

I suppose it’s possible, but I don’t really get that from what she said, and I’m not sure someone who was going to vote for Dolly Parton is really that much more likely to vote for Kate Bush or the Eurythmics than Devo or Lionel Richie or whoever when the option is removed.

          • jmyoung123-av says:

That was the concern I saw raised by others when her name appeared on the ballot.

        • medacris-av says:

If the reason was “only one woman can get in per year,” then that’s frustrating.

          • jmyoung123-av says:

It’s not de jure, but it is mostly de facto. Sure multiple women can get in, but the RRHoF has a less than stellar history of recognizing female contributors.

      • mctrl-av says:

It’s definitely odd. There have been country and jazz musicians in the HoF for decades, and if there’s one “non rock’n’roll” musician that won’t piss people off by being inducted, it’s Dolly Parton.

Just think of how many songwriters in rock have been inspired and influenced by her work. And a lot of her music has rock ‘n roll elements in it too, since the two genres have been cross-pollinating for a long time now. She’d be more than justified accepting the nomination, although I don’t doubt her sincerity here one bit. • anthonyhenderson-av says:

I just love the idea that the nomination goosed her into making a rock album.

    • xxxxxxxxxx1234-av says:

And she certainly has had pop success during her career, though probably not to the extent that some other dual rock/country nominees had. But the way I see it, the “honor” of induction is sort of beneath her anyway, and she’s already in the Country HoF, which as a museum is far better executed than the Rock HoF. Not that Dolly herself would ever say that or likely not even think that. But inducting Dolly benefits the HoF more than it tells us anything we don’t already know about Dolly’s cultural contributions and general awesomeness. Her declining induction is almost lending that organization integrity it doesn’t deserve.

    • bio-wd-av says:

Theres a lot history between the two.  Hank Williams is often considered a key forerunner to rock, the Carter Family as well.  Elvis’s first big hit song was a cover of Bill Monroes Blue Moon of Kentucky.  Johnny Cash kinda did it all genre wise.  Its complicated.

      • oldmanschultz-av says:

And then there’s so many artists like Lucinda Williams who are very comfortably representing both genres. This is hardly a gimmick. There’s a broad intersection and a back and forth of ideas for decades on decades. We could pinpoint the connections for days.

        • bio-wd-av says:

We could, its just a question of does Dolly Parton cross over enough?  She has some rock songs, but she seems to cross over more with pop.

          • oldmanschultz-av says:

I mean, I don’t take the Hall of Fame too seriously anyway. But dammit, if Run-DMC and NWA are in it (and they should), then Dolly can too, in my insignificant opinion.

          • bio-wd-av says:

I dont take it too seriously either, its actually kinda weird because the Country Hall of Fame is too picky.  Lot of important people like the Maddox Brothers and Rose aren’t in despite being a formative band for the genre and one member was alive until last year.   Also can’t argue there, NWA makes even less sense.

      • saltier-av says:

I think this says it all when it comes to the Rock & Roll’s Rockabilly roots. The Million Dollar Quartet—Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash at Sun Records, December 4, 1956.

    • emodonnell-av says:

The instrumentation, structural aspects, and themes can be very similar, which normally is enough to classify a genre as being under the broad category of rock (in a similar way that metal is so classified). But there’s been a very deliberate effort to insist on a separation in order to appeal to … certain Southern listeners who recoiled from the musical miscegenation represented by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and the other pioneers of the Memphis R&B/rock ‘n’ roll blend of the ‘50s.

    • dripad-av says:

The RnR Hall of Fame is bullshit. The nominating committee is basically 60s hippies that became 80s capitalists who think they know everything about rock and roll. The fact that Stevie Nicks gets in as an individual before Carol King, who is one of the most prolific songwriters in history, is truly a crime. And that is only one of a list of many crimes of theirs.Dolly Parton has proven time and time again she doesn’t need any institution to affirm her stature.  She stand above them all.

    • 1001001indistress-av says:

And a lot of her music has rock ‘n roll elements in it too, since the two genres have been cross-pollinating for a long time now.
Rock and roll has some of its origins in country music, heck, it’s got its roots in a lot of places. The issue is if you start splitting hairs, almost everything becomes rock and roll.

Though, I think what seals the deal is her cover of Stairway to Heaven. It doesn’t rock, it twangs, and where the song gets heavier, it cranks the twang up to 11.

  • legospaceman-av says:

This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do!I’d like to hear her do covers of rock and roll songs in the same vein Johnny Cash did.

  • fitbitz-av says:

I see her point. She has earned recognition in the Humanitarian HOF,  all of country music honorary groups obviousl, but rock n roll? She’s country, not rock and there’s nothing wrong with that. I think the RRHOF is trying to attach itself to her star and universal approval.

  • mamakinj-av says:

Dolly doesn’t think she’s Rock and Roll, and neither do I. She’s been kicking ass for over 50 years, and knew not to give Elvis half of the publishing on I Will Always Love You.  And when she was asked if it bothered her that people thought it was a Whitney original, she said, “Whitney gets the accolades, I cash the checks” (slightly paraphrased).  She’s accepted the honors from the places where she feels she’s earned it, so good for her.

“He’s been slagging Halford off for using a teleprompter for years.”Good natured ribbing. He gets along great with Rob in general. And without Priest there would likely be no Maiden.Bruce is a prick in general, but he’s buddy buddy with Rob. • luasdublin-av says:

          • blpppt-av says:

You would think so, but again, the RRHoF makes little sense. For example, they inducted Yes years AFTER Rush, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense considering that Yes was arguably just as big as Rush, and was DIRECT influence on Geddy and Alex.Another band that will likely never get the love it deserves—-King Crimson, who has influenced just about every modern prog/prog-metal band in existence.

          • kanedajones-av says:

I agree with you, but your comment and others here suggest that maybe there should be a first in first served way of doing things.  meanwhile it looks like most music genre museums like doing one old one medium age and one newish  just to balance out the public’s interest.

  • saltier-av says:

I think this is more about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame trying to maintain it’s relevance than about whether Dolly Parton should be in there or not. There have been more than a few questionable choices over the years, often seeming to be driven more by the tastes of the committee members than by merit. As for Dolly, she’s a class act and certainly views herself as a country artist. I can certainly understand why she wouldn’t want to steal the thunder of other artists who are primarily rockers.Personally, I think Dolly is a legitimate candidate. While she’s known primarily as a country recording artist, she has been one of music’s most prolific songwriters for decades—penning literally thousands of songs. Many of them have been recorded by other artists, some of whom are already in the RRHOF. So, yeah, I’m not surprised she’d be in the top five.

  • ultramattman17-av says:

Voting ends on April 29 and Parton is currently in the top five nominees, coming at fourth place, with Duran Duran taking the lead.Just to clarify, this is only the *fan vote*, which is a pretty minor part of the overall selection process. Basically, the top five artists from this poll are included on a Fan’s Ballot, which is then counted alongside all the other ballots – of which there are more than 1,000. So we’re talking about 1/1000th of the overall vote tied to this online poll. The rest is a mix of music writers, industry people, etc.
