Having already usurped actual words and traditional punctuation marks in modern-day communication, the ubiquitous idiograms known as emoji have now laid claim to the famed epidermis of one Audrey Drake Graham. Canadian rapper and Degrassi: The Next Generation alum Drake recently sparked the collective imagination of the Internet by permanently affixing a likeness of the “praying hands” emoji to his right forearm, alongside several other, less-bewildering tattoos. Thus far, the 27-year-old pop sensation has offered only offered a vague and enigmatic quasi-explanation of the new tat via his @champagnepapi Twitter feed. Quoth Drizzy: ““It will be a debate until the end of time … high five or praying hands … life is what you make it haaa.” Whatever the new ink may or may not signify, it has already inspired one fan to create a surprisingly chic, artful Tumblr called Drake’s Emoji Tattoos, which offers several intriguing “what if?” scenarios in which the music superstar is shown with hearts, pencils, smiley faces, and other adorable symbols indelibly inked on his arms and neck. The overall effect is of transforming the young dynamo of song into the living, breathing equivalent of a text message sent by an especially enthusiastic adolescent girl.
