Dredd

Aux News Coming Distractions

The last time we checked in on Dredd, the set photos promised to deliver a more faithful, properly serious rejoinder to 1995's Sylvester Stallone-starring Judge Dredd primarily through costume changes, like forcing new star Karl Urban to keep his giant helmet on at all times, and not having Rob Schneider draped around his shoulders like a gibbering sweater. This full trailer (which Lionsgate seems to finally be allowing on the Internet today) demonstrates another way in which this redone adaptation of the 2000 A.D. comics will be very serious indeed: Urban's post-apocalyptic lawman talks in a Christian Bale-meets-Clint Eastwood grumble that properly conveys the gravity of his situation, which involves he and rookie Olivia Thirlby invading a conveniently centralized (and therefore modestly budgeted) apartment complex controlled by Game Of Thrones' Lena Headey and her futuristic drug-dealing minions. The drug in question is actually called Slo-Mo, and director Peter Travis certainly gets high on it here; unfortunately for him, Dredd's own production moving at one-percent of its normal speed has already let Gareth Evans' very similar The Raid pass him by. But then, The Raid didn't have giant helmets.
