Dril, the guy responsible for creating what is quite likely Twitter’s only worthwhile account, has been busy diversifying his posting business. Following the launch of a Patreon, the release of a book, a run of Truthpoint: Darkweb Rising episodes on Adult Swim, and his ongoing work on a video game, dril’s decided to try and get a new TV show called Virtual Prison made.

Like Truthpoint, Virtual Prison is a collaboration with Derek Estevez-Olsen and Pierce Campion. Its short pilot episode follows a man in “a VR coma” (played by Estevez-Olsen) waking up in a lo-res video game world and being dubbed Tommy8772 by a “psychotronic transponser warden” named Dr. Spackliss (Campion). He’s told that he’s been imprisoned in the game, and will be held until he’s accumulated enough Good Person points to show that his “crime brain” is no longer an issue. A biker in a skull balaclava and goggles named G0mER (dril) shows up to offer an alternative: Being a virtual badass like him.

The pilot ends there, a continue prompt flashing on a shot of Tommy8772 lying in the hospital with a VR headset over his face. In an interview with Vice, Estevez-Olsen says that he, Campion, and dril need “the size of YouTube commenters pleading for a full series to reach critical mass” or for the three of them to “convince Adult Swim that the concept has legs” for it to get made.

When asked for comment, dril told Vice that he “was told to read Infinite Jest to prepare for the role [and] i accidentally ordered a book called Infinite Zest instead. and it was this cook book full of recipes inspired by DFW. So for the first 6 motnhs [sic], i thought the show was going to be about food!!!!” The article adds that “dril later clarified that the anecdote was a lie, and apologized.”

Anyway, watch the pilot, decide if you like it, then leave a comment on the YouTube page if you want to help get more of it made.

    What is DFW? Dallas-Fort Worth?

“dril told Vice that he “was told to read Infinite Jest to prepare for the role [and] i accidentally ordered a book called Infinite Zest instead.”Twitter comedy truly is evolving at an alarming rate, they’ve already discovered “Jewish uncle.”

Another headline where I read the words but don’t understand what they mean….

Imagine all the talented people that could have made a show instead…

I have no idea who Derek Estevez-Olsen is but I am choosing to believe he is the love child of Emilio Estevez and one of the Olsen twins.

Man I love dril, and I love Adult Swim content, but their management has been shitting their beds for years. I fully expect that the better this turns out, the more likely AS will cancel it too early.

Venture Bros. was a tentpole! A tentpole!

I’m still holding onto hope that some random network will pick up Venture Bros. That C.N./A.S. dropped the ball is…crazy. I mean, you’ve already invested all this time and money, what are you really losing to just keep it going??ETA:  I’ve watched the final season at least three times now, and I will admit that the final episode was pretty much perfect if they never get another run. It really does seem like they were tying up loose ends that last season, and putting it all together. Callbacks to even the first and second season? How many shows can you say did that effectively?

        • glancy-av says:

Yeah, I at least think the season 7 finale works as a series finale better than any previous season finale (barring the masterful “Operation P.R.O.M.”). The downside is that it’s also evident from that episode that the show still had plenty more gas left in its tank.

I’d put “All that and Gargantua 2″ on the same level. Perhaps the Halloween special as well, ‘cause it showed that Doc and Publik still had a handle on things. They definitely lost sight around season four or so, but the last two seasons? Holy crap. It’s like they both woke up and got back to business.

I honestly think AS should have just produced a TV show ready version of Truthpoint. It is pretty timely material with the ongoing grip conspiracy has on on our politics and it was very very funny. For all you other AS stream refugees, Dril and Derek Collaborators “The Perfect Women” also made their comeback yesterday on youtube.

Adult Swim did take one episode of Truthpoint DWR, edit the shit out of it, and show it on their TV channel.  But that editing process turned it into kind of a mess.

Just curious, why didn’t AV Club cover On Cinema At The Cinema becoming an independent production? That seems like bigger news than anything Truthpoint related.

If dril gets too corporate I’ll face God and walk backwards into hell.

hey “dril” if you’re reading this, go continue to prop up the censorship nanny state that is Twitter (seriously, banning Martin Kulldorff???). We don’t want your stupid TV ideas.

I was highly disappointed that this was not about Jack Nicholson doing one last film.I also have a drill, but it’s electric. Grown ass folk that have nicknames, like this guy, always come off as somehow…wrong. dril. the fuck. I had a nickname in my mid-20’s. Never been used since. “Are you a precious snowflake? Do you want to cause controversy? Do you just want to remain eponymous and still make people wonder who you are? Maybe you need a hug? Who hurt you? Maybe you want to do comedy but use backdoor lawyers to cover for you so you still get paid? Maybe you like exposure to the public but…don’t like being in public?”Figure it out.
