Move over, deer in headlights: We’ve got a new expression to convey “an almost paralyzed level of shock at some overpowering oncoming horror,” and it turns out that it’s “Game Of Thrones star Emilia Clarke being asked if she’s watched House Of The Dragon yet.”

Clarke was (very gently!) interrogated on her viewing habits by Variety this week, doing what appears to be a genuine double-take, followed by a quavering “No…?” and a nervous laugh in the immediate aftermath. It is, genuinely, one of the funnier celebrity interview moments we’ve seen in a second, as Clarke seems to be well-and-truly mortified by her own inability to watch the sequel series.

To be fair, Clarke (who was being interviewed in connection with her new movie The Pod Generation, with Chiwetel Ejiofor) was effusively positive about the show’s success, saying, “I’m so happy it’s happening, I’m so over the moon with all the awards, everyone who’s made it.” (She, not surprisingly, namechecks first-season co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik, who she worked with extensively on the mothership series.) But, also, no: She hasn’t seen it.

“I just can’t do it! It’s so weird!” she pronounces, before drawing out a metaphor to explain her discomfort. “It’s kind of like someone saying, ‘You want to go to this school reunion that’s not your year? Want to go to that school reunion?’ That’s how it feels. I’m avoiding it.”

Luckily, House Of The Dragon doesn’t necessarily need that one extra viewer; although not posting the wildly high numbers that Game Of Thrones itself was pulling in its final seasons on the air, the show has been a ratings success, even as it split its attentions between HBO and HBO Max.

I was kind of hoping she’d say something like “Oh god no, I’m not a nerd.”

    Aw, lucky her.

Probably my favourite Game of Thrones related content.

It’s so great when somebody becomes successful and famous but is also unarguably a genuinely nice and humble person. She’d never burn a capital city to the ground in a show of petulance.

What always got me was the fucking whiners who complained she turned evil.  Because only the men should be evil or have bad things happen to them?  Same whining I saw when they made Scarlet Witch the villain in the latest Doctor Strange.

wow that was the best thing the Rockets have done other than resisting trading Eric Gordon (the poor guy)

I’m biased being from Texas, but Clutch is one of the best mascots in all of sport so him meeting up with the Mother of Dragons is almost too unbearably adorable. Also Matt LeBlanc definitely has the “cool uncle with practical life lessons” vibe going.

Oh my God, she’s so adorable.DAMN, did D&D eff her over. She did not deserve Season 8.

could she possibly be any more off the charts adorable?

I started watching this series since I needed some treadmill TV. Honestly, I like it better than GOT. The scope is much smaller. It’s all about the succession. Far less violence, nearly no sex, and everything makes logical sense. The ambition reminds me of a GOT copycat show. Like something on Showtime. It’s good enough!

    • chestrockwell24-av says:

Who cares if GoT had too much sex and violence? Then don’t watch. Did you complain 50 shades of grey and all the crap sequels had too much sex?

      • sinatraedition-av says:

Someday you will have an epiphany about how your mental issues influence your quality of life. At no point did I say GOT had too much sex or violence. I only said HOD has less of that.

        • chestrockwell24-av says:

You said you like HOD more, and then seemed to list reasons, including less sex. So  fuck right on off with this ‘mental issues” bullshit.

I like it better than GOT. = statement of opinion. Facts: The scope is much smaller. It’s all about the succession. Far less violence, nearly no sex, and everything makes logical sense. What was not said nor implied: “GoT had too much sex and violence for me” Also not said: “GoT had too much sex and violence overall and objectively” Also not said: ”I didn’t like GoT”If you had asked me if I like GOT, or any other clarifying questions, you could have avoided embarrassing yourself. Instead you showed that you place anger over civility, and you prefer to be corrosive rather than curious. And you’d eagerly fill in the blanks with negative opinions and projections about others.  Someday you will have an epiphany about how your mental issues influence your quality of life.

honestly the fantasy elements were the worst part of Game of Thrones

      • sinatraedition-av says:

I didn’t mind the fantasy elements. Or even the violence/sex. What got me were the terrible editing and plot decisions in the last few seasons. The narrative just fell apart. I felt like the setpieces and violence tried to paper over the missing scenes (just like Mad Men).

“It’s kind of like someone saying, ‘You want to go to this school reunion that’s not your year? Want to go to that school reunion?’ That’s how it feels. Kinda how it feels like when watching it.

What I found bizarre was motherfuckers whining about Sir Criston Cole yet stanning Daemon despite both being piece of shit murderers.

  • badkuchikopi-av says:

    • nesquikening-av says:

It’s sloppy—but that’s how they roll these days, e.g. calling most revivals “reboots.” At least here, you could argue they’re using an outdated term, rather a more modern term incorrectly, since (and correct me if I’m wrong) wasn’t Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom a “sequel,” once upon a time?

  • scaryguydr-av says:

    That’s a simile, not a metaphor.Do bettter.

  • bashbash99-av says:

    Eh, its not that funny

  • chestrockwell24-av says:

“very funny” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, but okay!

  • pogostickaccident-av says:

I mean, it’s a show that answers the underlying question of what Dany thought she was restoring (a whole lot of irrational bullshit) while also filling in the gaps of why no one in the GOT timeline wanted the Targaryens back. It takes a lot of wind out of the sails of any argument that Dany’s story won’t end the same way in the books, and I understand why the actress who played her wouldn’t want to be reminded of being blindsided

  • liffie420-av says:

Why does it matter? Like just because she was in GOT doesn’t mean she might enjoy watching fantasy type content.
