According to Variety, Emilia Clarke has in “final negotiations” (an underrated Europe song) to join Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which is somehow connected to the Skrulls from Captain Marvel and will feature Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn reprising their Marvel Cinematic Universe roles alongside a supposed villain played by Kingsley Ben-Adir and a mystery character played by Olivia Colman. The Secret Invasion event in the comics was about Skrulls replacing key figures on Earth, including superheroes, so they could take over without really having to try too hard, and the movie will probably take the basic beats of that story while dramatically changing everything else about it (the standard MCU approach, in other words).

As for who Clarke might be playing, Variety doesn’t know and Marvel won’t say, but—like yesterday, when we heard about Colman being cast—we have some guesses. The obvious choice, and it’s more obvious today than it was yesterday when it only seemed like the obvious choice, is that Clarke could play Veranke, queen of the Skrulls. There’s some fun symmetry to her Game Of Thrones character there, since dragons are sometimes green and Skrulls are green, but maybe it’s too much symmetry? We semi-jokingly suggested yesterday that Colman should be play Kl’rt, the Super-Skrull with the powers of all the Fantastic Four, but maybe Colman can be Veranke and Clarke can be Kl’rt? Or maybe they’ll just be boring humans who don’t have bumpy green chins and can’t transform into other people. They could even be other members of the Boehner family, like Evan Peters’ character in WandaVision. That was a funny joke that everyone liked, right?

I think more people will be fine with Ralph Bohner turns out to actually have been someone else later on. Which he is, isn’t that right Marvel?Seems like more people still liked/tolerated the Ralph Bohner reveal even as is than Game of Thrones Season 8 as well, though too doesn’t it?

    • bigal6ft6-av says:

They almost immediately retconned the Mandarin twist with the “All Hail the King” one-shot, with the multiverse shenanigans on the horizon they can retcon the hell outta Ralph Bohner. (why the hell when everything in Westview is supposed to be made by Wanda would suddenly his ID and headshots be “from the real world”, it breaks the show’s own internal logic anyway)

    • brianjwright-av says:

      Heh. Bohner.

  • psychopirate-av says:

I can’t wait for the show. I think this may turn out to be a much bigger deal than it’s getting credit for; everybody assumes the biggest MCU event will be a movie, and while that is probably true, Secret Invasion is a big deal in Marvel, and casting news like this only underscores that fact.

    • Velops-av says:

Do people still have an appetite for conspiracy stories? They aren’t really meant for casual fans.

      • psychopirate-av says:

I think it will be more than just a “conspiracy story”, even though that’s obviously the core of it. With a cast like this, we’re looking at a big deal, and people always have an appetite for big deals.

From what I remember, the only real consequence of Secret Invasion was that it led to Norman Osborne taking control of SHIELD and having his Thunderbolts become the new Avengers. That and Hank Pym was absolved of being complicit in the atrocities the Pro-Registration side of Civil War on account of him being replaced with a Skrull as well as introducing the modern iteration of Deadpool in a tie-in

      • thegreetestfornoraisin-av says:

It also revealed that Mockingbird had been replaced by a skrull quite some time ago, before dying, and the real Mockingbird was alive and held captive by the skrulls. It also caused a lot of issues for Jessica Drew’s life, as the skrull queen had replaced her.

    • doobie1-av says:

The potential problem I see here is that ideally and for maximum chaos, this should be full of cameos. Skrull Steve Rogers! Skrull Tony Stark! Skrull Black Widow! What made the original event kind of a letdown was there were some huge teases about major characters having been replaced by skrulls some significant amount of time ago, which would essentially reset the character to a previous version. In the end, that didn’t really happen except in some very limited ways, but I feel like I’m in for a similar disappointment if it turns out they’ve been replacing random politicians we’ve never heard of.

let’s get a CGI garry shandling in the motherfucker.

      • billyfever-av says:

I would actually love if the show did the exact same thing as the comic and had their big reveal be Mockingbird. There was so much buildup about a major character coming back and then when they were like “It’s Mockingbird! The character everyone knows and loves, whose death devastated the Avengers!” I had literally never heard of her because at the time I had only read like 2 issues of West Coast Avengers. Anyway, I think it would be very funny to see the MCU pull the same bullshit.

If ScarJo wants back in, and the BW-movie goes well, consider this:
The Widow who bought the farm on Vormir was a skrull, and they bust out the real one out from skrull-prison on the mothership in this series and BAM, back in business.

Guess not. But they could likely retcon other stuff with this if they want to. It is a great opportunity.

    • veryfineday-av says:

      I cannot wait either!

  • andrewbare29-av says:

As I recall, she was up for the role of Sharon Carter way back when. Things have worked out pretty well for her since, and it’s not like Sharon’s become a crucial part of the MCU or anything.

  • hankdolworth-av says:

…you might as well claim everyone in Secret Invasion is being cast as a skrull, since that’s what most of them will turn out to be anyway.(I’ll guess that one of these actors gets cast as Hulkling’s mom, just to set up another one of the Young Avengers.)

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

Personally, I’d rather she had helmed a Qi’ra mini-series on Disney+. I want to see a “The Sopranos but Star Wars” show, Disney! But sure, Emilia Clarke the SuperSkrull (or Lyja, maybe?) works for me, too.

    • bobfunch1-on-kinja-av says:

She was fine in Solo. Maybe because I’m trained now to expect every single plot thread to get wrapped up, or because I’m rooting for Emilia Clarke’s post GoT career, but it’s stuck in the back of my head that her scheme with Maul is left hanging. Maybe the Obi Wan series can do flashback arcs where these things get aired out. It sounds like it’s going this way – kinda sorta – Old Obi Wan reflects on his life etc.

      • MannyBones-av says:

It depends how far back they go. If it’s pre-Ep III, Qi’ra is still a child on Corellia. Post-, Obi Wan and Han have clearly never met. I can’t remember if Obi Wan actually met Chewbacca in that one episode of Clone Wars where Chewie helped Ahsoka save all those kids, Yoda for sure did (the start of his good relations, perhaps?).Also, in Rebels, Maul implies that he’s gone up against Vader at least once, and lost. So there’s that out there.

    • fanburner-av says:

I would love for Qi’ra to be a major part of the Boba Fett / galactic underworld series.

    • hulk6785-av says:

Okay, I wanna see “The Sopranos but Star Wars” show right Goddamn NOW!!!!

    • labbla-av says:

I just watched Solo again and yeah I’d love to see her return.

    • veryfineday-av says:

That story idea would be interesting, especially after the end of “Solo: A Star Wars Story”. A show like that could even explore the time when she was serving Crimson Dawn before she comes back near the end of the first act.

    • Jason-Smith-av says:

With Ming-Na Wen being in 3 Disney franchises, I wouldn’t count anything out…

    • south-of-heaven-av says:

It was so great to see her get to be actually funny in a fantasy setting.

  • rigbyriordan-av says:

Was the end credits scene with Nick Fury waking up on some spaceship supposed to be related to this?

    • backwardass-av says:

The presumption of that reveal being the Fury we saw throughout the movie was a Skrull playing the part of Fury, while Fury was off in space doing something I’m sure this series will explore in more depth.

      • douglasd-av says:

I’m willing to bet that space station was the “Alpha Flight Space Station” which in comics universe is commanded by Carol Danvers (among others at various times.) But that’s just a guess. It could also be “The Peak” which is S.W.O.R.D.’s orbital base. Or it could be a combination of the two. However my guess is still Alpha Flight due to Fury’s connection with Captain Marvel.

  • america-the-snyder-cut-av says:

Emilia Clarke as Veranke impersonating Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) would be great! I would love to see it.

  • dremilioglizadario-av says:

Did no one notice, she is actually not a good actor?

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Can we retcon Game of Thrones into the MCU?
Just a simple change like Dany being a Skrull would improve the ending.

  • ruefulcountenance-av says:

I love the name Kingsley Ben-Adir. Who else can we use the same formula on? A reversal of a British actor’s stage name, with a different name tacked on the end.Mirren Helen-JuliaCaine Michael-Thomas

    • methylermine-av says:

Yeah, when I saw that name I assumed that Sir Ben Kingsley had converted to Judiasm or Islam or something. Then I looked him up and discovered he’s a totally different actor. The More You Know!

  • cokes311-av says:

She’s not going to be Veranke…………She’s going to be Jessica Drew

  • wuxiapatriarch-av says:

I don’t know anything about the show, but I’ll watch it for her. She’s so lovely and deserve all the happiness in the world.

  • coldsavage-av says:

I am a pretty big MCU fan and I have to say, there is virtually no buzz for this. Maybe I am missing something, but there was a ton of articles/buzz WandaVision, TFatWS and Loki (even She-Hulk and Moon Knight), but this one seems like its “oh, btw, we’re doing this too.” Maybe that’s just me?

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

i never watched got, but every other genre thing she’s been in has been trash (solo & terminator), so this doesn’t bode well, historically speaking. not saying she was the problem, but…

  • crann777-av says:

Does Secret Invasion as a storyline even work after Captain Marvel? I mean, the Skrulls that we’ve seen in the MCU aren’t the same malevolent empire that they are in the comics. I guess they could come up with some other shape-shifting intergalactic baddies (the Brood would be fucking lit), but who knows.

  • ryan-buck-av says:

“a supposed villain played by Kingsley Ben-Adir”Spoiler: it’s not the Mandarin.

  • JohnnyWasASchoolBoy-av says:

I’m confused. I though the Skrulls were the good guys. Wasn’t that the point of Captain Marvel? I’m not about to self-drive down the Marvel universe rabbit hole. Can someone explain this to me? Use small words.

  • aray-han-av says:

Her being Veranke would make a lot of sense. But then, in the MCU, the Skrulls are a persecuted race brought to near extinction by the Kree, and have been the good guys since Captain Marvel. So, it would be kind of sad to see them turned into villains.

  • millstacular-av says:

Could you have found a worse picture of her?
