With the 2023 Primetime Emmy nominations just around the corner—they’ll be announced on July 12, and the show takes place on September 18—The A.V Club is breaking down this year’s contenders in some key races. After tackling dramas, comedies, and lead actors, we turn our attention to two more big categories: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Two-time winner Zendaya is absent from the ballot because no new Euphoria episodes premiered during the eligibility period, so Succession’s Sarah Snook figures to be the frontrunner on the drama side after her excellent turn in the show’s final season. In the comedy category, returning nominees Rachel Brosnahan (for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Quinta Brunson (for Abbott Elementary) face stiff competition from a couple of buzzy new entrants. The A.V. Club has picked out some strong possibilities, wild cards, and performers who should (but sadly won’t) be nominated. And be sure to check out our reactions to all of this year’s nominees next week.

As upsetting as it was to lose Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra Targaryen after only five episodes on , Emma D’Arcy took up the mantle like a champion with their singularly electrifying performance. about the disappointment of having no choice but to get slotted into a gendered category. Hopefully, the Television Academy will take those notes in the future.

I stopped watching The Crown once the news spoiled the ending.

Melanie Lynskey was amazing & amazingly dark on s2 of Yellowjackets. I hope she isn’t hurt by the ultimately disappointing storyline in the present day (I agree the flashback storyline this season was more compelling & made more sense)

Sarah Snook. So many great performances listed here, but she just really was so exceptionally incredible in this season of Succession I hope it’s her.

Sarah Snook for Lead Actress in a Drama and Rachel Brosnahan for Lead Actress in a Comedy.

It can’t be understated just how good the Reservation Dogs episode “Mabel” is. Devery Jacobs deserves the Emmy for writing that.I love seeing love for Charlotte Nicdao on this list. She’s the show’s MVP.

Devery Jacobs is Stunningly fantastic in Reservation Dogs. She Deserves it over everyone else.

I really love Pauline Alexis as Willie Jack too, but will grudgingly concede that this season Devery Jacobs probably had better material

So have we all just given up on seeing Rhea Seehorn get her proper recognition?

    • Saloni Gajjar says:

She’s submitting in the supporting actress category, although i get it, she’s a lead in my eyes too.

      • paulfields77-av says:

Ah right – that makes sense (while not making sense).

I’m shocked, because that category is stacked with the entire cast of Yellowjackets outside of Lynskey and Nelisse, the rest of HotD, all of White Lotus, Elizabeth Debicki from The Crown, and those are just the LIKELY nominees.

        • Saloni Gajjar says:

I agree. I do think Rhea has a strong chance to score a nomination if not a win. But it’s tough!! Here’s more from her on why she chose to submit in supporting over lead, though: https://www.avclub.com/interview-rhea-seehorn-better-call-saul-emmys-finale-1849420004

The Snubbing Of Rhea Seehorn 2023 continues, I see.
    Absolutely ridiculous oversight, sheesh.

Katja Herbers is really great on Evil. She has an angelic face, but is no angel, and maybe is not even on the side of the angels. But I pull for her anyway
