Clockwise from bottom left: Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in Mr. & Mrs. Smith; Anna Sawai in Shōgun; Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor, and Paulina Alexis in Reservation Dogs; Hannah Einbinder in Hacks Photo: Prime Video; Katie Yu/FX; FX; Jake Giles Netter/Max

For the second time this year, we’re in the Emmy Awards grind. The delayed 2023 ceremony took place just this January, with the regularly scheduled one occurring in the fall. As for the latter, the 2024 Emmys have some stiff competition thanks to returning favorites such as Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and The Crown, as well as new hits like Shōgun and Fallout.

A few notes for those keeping score: FX might just make history if its originals win in the three top categories: Outstanding Drama, Comedy, and Limited Series. Will Shōgun, The Bear, and Fargo lead the cable network to glory? Or will Reservation Dogs do it instead? (Please, TV gods, don’t let that beautiful show go off into the sunset without getting the recognition it deserves.) Also, it’s not the strongest year for network TV, a common recent trend. And Netflix has some strong odds this time around because of Baby Reindeer and the excellent Ripley.

Before we get into it, here are the housekeeping details: The 76th Primetime Emmys are scheduled for September 15 on ABC. The eligibility period is for TV shows that aired from June 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024, voting for nominations is from June 13 to 24, with the announcement following on July 17.

, you are missed. In the absence of last year’s winner along with no , , and , the door is open for new entrants like the delightful cringefest and Prime Video’s retooled . Fallout could fill the video-game adaptation void without The Last Of Us, too. And if you thought Game Of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were goners, think again: is a major contender as well. They’ll have to battle Emmy favorite ’s final season. Netflix’s royal drama has swept the category before and is a certain lock for one of the eight slots. It was probably favored to win before FX’s Shōgun switched from Limited Series to Drama. They’re now the big shows to reckon with. Among other possibilities lie the juicy The Gilded Age season two and The Morning Show season three. If there were a surprise, though, it would be a big franchise like Loki, Ahsoka, or Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, if voters want to branch out before casting ballots, as they desperately need to, it’s time to reward underrated gems like AMC’s Dark Winds, Max’s Tokyo Vice, FX’s Justified: City Primeval, and Apple TV+’s Silo (each far superior to The Morning Show). Predicted nominees: 3 Body ProblemThe CrownThe CurseFalloutThe Gilded AgeThe Morning ShowMr. & Mrs. SmithShōgunWild card: Slow Horses. Unless Loki sneaks in, this British spy thriller might just get its due. Should be a contender: Dark Winds

That last one would be quite the surprise, yes.
(But seriously, Dark Winds would be a good surprise entry here, even if the ending of the season was a bit anticlimactic, and some kudos to Zahn McClarnon would be nice to see.)

Reservation dogs and the fine actors in that show should win as much as possible. It is reprehensible that they have not won more.

It would be cool if as predicted Devery Jacobs gets a nomination though it almost seems unfair to single her or anyone out from the cast of Reservation Dogs as they are all so good (Pauline Alexis as Willie Jack is probably my favorite) Also the US Ghosts is my favorite current comedy & I would love any acknowledgement that it exists

Did Mr. and Mr. Smith get any better because I bailed after three or four episodes. It didn’t strike me as award worthy.

I’m on board with the praise for Reservation Dogs, The Other Two, and Invincible, but Justified: City Primeval was bad. Major disappointment.

I’d be fine with acting Emmys for Fielder and Stone but the ending killed a lot of my enthusiasm for the show.

very dumb thing to be bothered by but the other two wouldn’t even qualify this year… its final season even got a writing nom last year

Although Vampire shows, etc have never been my go to, I randomly started watching season 1 of “Interview With The Vampire” last year, and have since gotten my husband and friends hooked! I am hoping for at least one of the major acting noms for the 3 main vampires (Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid, Baily Bass) and Eric Bogosian as the interviewer Danny Mulloy as well. They have all done absolutely stellar work! Otherwise, of the shows you have highlighted here (that I have) seen, Fargo is my fav!
