Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Sunday, January 9. All times are Eastern.

Top picks

Euphoria (HBO, 9 p.m., season-two premiere): The last time we saw Rue (Zendaya) and Jules (Hunter Schafer) was in December 2020 and January 2021 for two holiday specials. The first season ended in 2019, and can be summed up by Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya in her finale recap: “Just like much of this series has felt like a bunch of adults asking, ‘Did you KNOW that Gen Z teens do SO MUCH WILD STUFF?,’ the finale often screams its themes. Being a teenager sucks. Love hurts. The theatrics and emotions of Euphoria are supersized. But the show simultaneously takes itself so seriously and sometimes gets lost in its own grandeur.” We’ll see what our new reviewer Michael-Michelle Pratt has to say about the season-two premiere.

The Righteous Gemstones (HBO, 10 p.m., season-two premiere): The evangelical Christian version of Succession is back after a two-year break. Jason Schwartzman, Eric Andre, and Eric Roberts are among the guest stars in season two. Two new episodes air back-to-back tonight, and Mike Vanderbilt will be recapping.

Dexter: New Blood (Showtime, 9:00 p.m., season finale): Per Joshua Alston’s latest recap, “‘The Family Business’” finds Dexter giving into the temptation that has been slowly consuming him all season, the temptation to steer Harrison onto the same path that Harry once showed him. The problem is that nothing Dexter has done since ending his streak of abstinence resembles anything from Harry’s code.” Now that Harrison has seen what Dexter really is, and how he does it, will he want to keep to that code?

Regular coverage

Yellowjackets (Showtime, 10 p.m.)

Wild card

Pivoting (FOX, 8:30 p.m., series premiere): Eliza Coupe, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Maggie Q star as a foursome who have just lost their fourth, childhood friend Colleen. They decide to make a series of “impulsive, ill-advised and self-indulgent decisions.” Maggie Q quitting medicine because she doesn’t want to deliver bad news to anyone or continue to deal with illness or death—that joke hits hard. Tonight’s premiere will air simultaneously in all time zones (which means a 5:30 p.m. start on the West Coast), and subsequent episodes will air Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. Eastern beginning January 13.

Just watched the Dexter (2nd) finale. Not sure how I feel about it yet, but I think no matter what I eventually conclude, it will be better than the Lumberjack disaster. Not going to leave any spoilers.

    • ghboyette-av says:

Personally I very much enjoyed it. Way better than the original finale. I hope they’re smart enough to leave it there. I don’t need to see a Harrison spin off

      • blpppt-av says:

Yeah, I actually thought I might be interested in a “Son of Dexter” spinoff at some point this season, but for some reason I just feel like this whole plotline has been worn out after the finale.Maybe that’ll change in a few months time.I do applaud the writers for coming to that ending though—I’m sure the Showtime execs would have preferred a different ending so they could milk the cash cow for some more seasons.

        • dmctrevor-av says:

“Not going to leave any spoilers” yeah mate you just did

          • blpppt-av says:

No, I actually didn’t. That can be taken in any number of ways. Only somebody who actually watched the episode would know what I am talking about.

          • dmctrevor-av says:

Anyone with half a brain cell in their nut would figure out what you meant there.

          • blpppt-av says:

So, in another words, I didn’t actually spoil anything.I’m not even sure why you are bringing this up except to troll. I made an effort to not specifically spoil anything, and there are any number of ways you could take “milk the cash cow for some more seasons.”.So, please, feel free to STFU.

          • dmctrevor-av says:

You don’t have to acknowledge out loud that you spoiled the ending, but it would do you good to accept it within yourself instead of having a petulant tantrum about it.  There is only one reasonable interpretation anyone could have to explain the notion that Showtime would be unable to further milk the cash cow.  And that’s the right one.

          • blpppt-av says:

“There is only one reasonable interpretation anyone could have to explain the notion that Showtime would be unable to further milk the cash cow. And that’s the right one.”Uh no. They could have had Dexter kill his son for one thing. Or had him locked up.JFC, I can’t believe I have to explain to you all the possible outcomes that would make it impossible for Showtime to continue milking the MCH Dexter.Secondly, THAT post only came after somebody had already replied, so I’m sorry—but if you are following a thread on Dexter looking to avoid *hints*, why would you bother continuing to read?Lets be honest, the only reason you even brought it up is because you thought you were being clever. But you aren’t, and I didn’t spoil jack squat. I’m sure on some level you know this.

          • dmctrevor-av says:

“They could have had Dexter kill his son for one thing. Or had him locked up.”Either one could’ve seen the show continue.  Frankly the former would be preferable if anything.  You’re embarrassing yourself insisting on something anyone who is reading knows to be untrue.

          • blpppt-av says:

“Either one could’ve seen the show continue.”You are absolutely insane if you think for a second that Showtime would be able to keep a show going if Dexter kills Harrison. Secondly, Dexter in prison? You really think there’s a series to be made there? You would have a more plausible chance of that last scene not being definitive than either of those things happening.Just give it up. You lied. There wasn’t anything even approaching a spoiler in my post, and you know it.

          • dmctrevor-av says:

I get that you desperately want the last word no matter what, because you think it will prove you right and give you the “win”.  You blew that the second you denied spoiling the ending.  But you’re free to grab that word anyway, because I’m not pathetically in need of it like you, you’d probably do this for days if need be.

          • blpppt-av says:

“I get that you desperately want the last word no matter what, because you think it will prove you right and give you the “win”.”Excuse me, but it was YOU who felt the need to point out some nonsensical slight in the first place.I specifically went out of my way to not spoil the ending. And the post that you laughably claim “gave everything away” would have only be accessible had you KEPT on reading a thread about a show you would have been trying to avoid getting spoilers on!Then, I gave you two plausible other endings off the top of my head, both of which were actually discussed on these threads for weeks, which would make “Dexter” not able to be milked in future shows. The ONLY thing I said remotely specific about the ending! And finally, even despite your ridiculous insistence in saying I spoiled something, I STILL haven’t given away the actual ending, to this point in this thread!Trust me, if there ever was a “loss” in an internet squabble, you’ve definitely secured it with your sad troll job here.

No he right tho. Dont agree with his methods but… yeah not you … yeah here we are so obv something went wrong.

          • drips-av says:

Oh buddy, it really can’t. So yeah a thanks here too with a hand gesture that hey, can be taken in any number of ways

  • bensavagegarden-av says:

I had no idea The Righteous Gemstones was coming back already, but I am very much looking forward to getting “Misbehavin'” stuck in my head again.

TUAYPCW Polka-Dot Man was molded in ecru despite his suit in The Suicide Squad
clearly being white. The toy also comes with a card pointing out they
didn’t paint the dots right. So I did the only sane thing &
repainted it. See if you can spot all the differences.
https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com/2022/01/04/dots-all-for-the-suicide-squads-polka-dot-man/Landscapers was very good! Kate O’Flynn should play The Brand in a Saga adaptation.
I finally saw Jaws. “Y’all know me. Know how I earn a livin’.” I LITERALLY DO NOT!

TUAYPCWThis is the second weekend of quarantine with the small humans, so we’re on a lot of “puppies” (Paw Patrol, mostly the show and the new movie, twice). I, as always, have questions about the role of the bureaucracy near them, especially when they leave their own town and are still setting up road blocks and making arrests (as dogs).Wife has made it to season…six? seven? of Vampire Diaries. Whenever woman who played the main character in season one had left the show. I’m extremely lost, and don’t understand the character relationships or know who is supposed to have what powers at this point. It’s quite a treat.Wen everyone else has gone to sleep, I’ve finally started the Witcher season 2. I’m, of course, only on episode 2 now, because it’s midnight before I can start watching, and I am an old, tired man. It’s still well designed, but I have, thus far, no sense of propulsion. My oldest decided to watch Into the Spiderverse yesterday, on cable. I pointed out that we had the blu ray literally ten feet from where they were watching it, and apparently I’m a monster for not wanting to watch something without built in commercial breaks with commercials.  That soundtrack remains an absolute banger.

I love how Dexter just completely ignores the whole serial killer sex thing. No, he just likes to kill because reasons and his gratification isn’t physical at all.

  • mattthecatania-av says:

Did the site change its timezone? It’s timestamped midnight, but for the past few weeks the Sunday edition of this has been posted later than 12 AM Central.
