Euphoria might be about to get a five-year time jump

Costume designer Heidi Bivens has floated rumors that the HBO show might skip entirely over Rue and the rest's senior year

It feels like most of the conversation surrounding HBO’s Euphoria, of late, has been centered on things that aren’t, well, the actual TV show Euphoria. There’s the general chaos sweeping over creator Sam Levinson’s other big project, The Idol, for instance; there’s also former star Barbie Ferreira opening up more about her decisions to leave the series. At this point in the show’s life cycle, discussion of the actual events surrounding Zendaya’s Rue and the various people in her orbit feels…almost quaint.

Even so: It’s interesting to hear rumblings that the series might be about to do something a little drastic with its timeline soon, as a Vogue interview with costume designer Heidi Bivens revealed a new rumor about the show’s upcoming third season: It might be time jump time, folks.

To be clear, we’re deep in speculation territory here; Bivens is clear about the fact that she hasn’t seen any scripts yet for season 3, and pretty much nobody but Levinson knows for sure where this series is going to go next. But, nevertheless:

I’m really excited to read the scripts. There is talk of it being approximately five years in the future, and that they’re not in high school anymore. Dorothy’s not in Kansas anymore. I mean, it might be a total trip. Who can say? But knowing Sam’s brain, it’s gonna be exciting, and he will challenge all of us, because he won’t want to repeat himself. It’ll be something new for the audience to discover.

From a narrative point of view, it’d be pretty wild to skip over the characters’ senior year (plus, hypothetically, all of college!) given than Euphoria is, ostensibly, a show about wild goings-on at a high school. (It would bring most of the characters up to something close to their actors’ actual ages, though.) Do these characters even work outside of that social pressure cooker environment? We’ll have to wait until the show comes back later this year to find out.

So I guess now Levinson has decided to watch S5 of One Tree Hill along with S7 of Skins.

I might watch this again if they move it into the future. I thought the actors seemed ridiculous playing teens and the narrative never felt comfortable for that age group. LettingFerreira get away was a bad move. Her’s was the most interesting character in the show, imo. I’ve heard that she’s looking for work in the horror genre. I’m not a fan, but I hope it works out for her.

I know high school is never as dramatic as teen dramas make it out to be, but man, the stuff those Euphoria kids get into makes my teenage years look especially boring. It took me until my early 20’s at a music festival to be offered those drugs!

I know Degrassi walked so Euphoria could run, but god damn is Euphoria way too over the top for this Degrassi fan.

I’ve been around while all of season 1 and 2 of Euphoria was playing, but was only half watching. But it feels like Skins with rich kids? IDK it’s pretty grim and miserable the whole time, but no one is endearing like the kids on Skins.

For sure, lacks any of the charm Skins had as well. It’s so try hard with the sex and drugs that it comes off terribly boring.

Hmm maybe. It’s way more melodramatic than Skins ever was though.Side note, while I mostly enjoyed Skins, I’ll never forgive the show for the absolutely horrendous way Freddie’s story ended.

I’ve never watched this show. Feels like something I’d end up on a watchlist for.

Finally, they’re going to tie this show into the MCU. Not sure how they’re going to deal with the Zendaya issue, but I’m confident Kevin Feige has a solution.

I hope the Euphoria gang gets a wacky robot friend and they have to fight Kromaggs from Sliders

Rue’s closing monologue from the last episode definitely felt like someone talking from further into the future (“I stayed clean for the rest of that year”), so that would actually make sense.

Will they all look back with maturity and realize that High School is not Very Important?

  • sarcastro7-av says:

Maybe they jump forward long enough for Fezco to have completed his jail time (although I’d sure think he’s getting a hell of a lot of it, so maybe not feasible).

I don’t care about you wasted little hornballs in the future either.
