Following the announcement that Dakota Johnson would be playing the titular character in Madame Web, Deadline has reported that Sydney Sweeney is joining the Marvel project. The actress recently concluded a second season of her breakout role on Euphoria and was part of The White Lotus’ stacked ensemble last year.

There are no further details on what role Sweeney will be playing, though she is a fan-favorite pick for Felicia Hardy. Also known as Black Cat, the Spider-Man antagonist has the ability to inflict bad luck on her opponents.

Little is known about Madame Web so far. In the comics, the character was introduced as Cassandra Webb, an elderly blind woman with psychic powers. However, the more youthful Julia Carpenter has also taken the mantle, and Johnson’s casting implies that this is the version being adapted. (Though you never know, they might be taking a leaf out of DC’s book and just giving her a whole new face.) S.J. Clarkson is attached to direct, with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless writing the screenplay.

Madame Web will not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man and adjacent characters; an ongoing collaboration with Marvel Studios has allowed Peter Parker to appear in the MCU, including team-up stories Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Beyond the animated Into The Spider-Verse, the studio has been building out its own connected series of live-action Marvel adaptations. Both Venom movies have proven to be box office smashes, and Sony hopes to do it again next month with Morbius, featuring Jared Leto as the Living Vampire. A Kraven The Hunter film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Christopher Abbott is also in the works. While Sony has been giving a number of Spider-Man villains the spotlight, Spider-Verse ally and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Cindy Moon, aka Silk, is set to get her own series on Prime Video.

Is she the one who isn’t a “real actor” because she gets naked?

Since the fact you are asking this question means you either can’t google, or are hoping someone will provide you with fap material. I’m going to say GFY and hijack your thread with a more interesting question.Question: If Black Cat can inflict someone with bad luck, has there ever been a comic where she’s been pitted against Domino or Longshot?

      • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

So where’s the “more interesting question”?

      • bustertaco-av says:

People can google anything. You ask questions and what not in the comment section so you get a response and social interaction. It makes the comments fun and inviting, and makes it so we’re all actual humans doing human things. We are just reading a blog about movies and shows, after all. Why not just shoot the shit with your fellow weirdos? As for Black Cat, I think it works like Magic the Gathering. Whichever ability is cast last negates the last one. You cast your good luck ability, boom, counterspell, shit’s done. But that is a fun mental exercise where having a few other peoples discussing it would make it fun.

The spider isn’t here for a discussion. They’re here to spam the comments with their stupid jokes.

    • docprof-av says:

That would be her. (But also she’s not actually a particularly good actor, so there’s that too.)

    • kim-porter-av says:

She’s the one who’s a good actress, but said that actresses aren’t taken seriously for awards when they get naked. So, the one worth watching, but maybe not the final word on the history of film.

I’ve never heard anyone say that. I have heard comments based on the fact that she starred in a trilogy of films based on what are generally considered to be poorly written fan fiction erotica. However I believe she’s a fine actress, but my primary exposure to her acting was “Ben and Kate”.

People are way to excited to see her as Black Cat, seriously…. it’s a fucking Madame Web movie. It’s gonna suck even if it has good and decent actors in it.Somehow I do bet the Madame Web movie will be way better than Morbius.

Seems like Marvel proper missed an amazing opportunity to cast Gwen Poole.

Sony still determined to finally find that superhero fatigue for everybody else

Meanwhile, Twitter is convinced that either Tati Gabrielle (who would be amazing) or Ana-Taylor Joy (who might be too big for this now) are going to be the Black Cat in Spider-Man 4, which feels deeply unrealistic.

If Sony is using the Black Cat — and given that they wanted to make a standalone movie with her, they seem inclined to — I can’t imagine Disney wants that kind of confusion in the marketplace, even if they have the right to use their own Black Cat.

you know, she often mentions training in MMA, maybe she will be good at the fight scenes? i know some good fighters look silly and some good cinematic fighters have no real martial arts background, but she might at least know how to sell the moves correctly.

‘stacked ensemble’I see what you did there.

How long until these movies go the way of Universal’s Monsterverse or whatever the hell they were trying.
