Amazon and HBO have done everything in their power to make sure all eyes are on them for the fall 2022 TV season, what with The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power or House Of The Dragon battling it out for mindshare and viewers. But there’s plenty of other excellent, innovative work being done in the fantasy realm on TV this season. Which is where this rundown comes in.

In a unique cultural moment, fall TV is stacked with promising new series, like Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire, The Witcher: Blood Origin, and The Winchesters. There are also some exciting returning shows, including Fate: The Winx Saga, Good Omens, and His Dark Materials. Perhaps the most wonderful thing is that these shows all co-exist at the same time. Here then is a look at every fantasy TV series (besides The Rings Of Power and House Of The Dragon) you need to know about this season.

Fate: The Winx Saga | Season 2 Official Trailer | Netflix

Premiere date: September 16, NetflixOn the surface, has a lot in common with Vampire Academy: they both take place at a magical boarding school, they each premiere within a day of the other, and … actually, no, that’s where the similarities end. Still, don’t overlook this one because of its somewhat tired boarding school setting; it’s based on a wildly popular Nickelodeon animated series, Winx Club, and while season one didn’t exactly resonate with critics, it was a runaway success for Netflix in terms of ratings. Let’s hope Bloom (Abigail Cowen) and her fellow students/fairies Stella (Hannah van der Westhuysen), Musa (Elisha Applebaum), Terra (Eliot Salt), and Aisha (Precious Mustapha) can recapture some of the magic that made Winx Club so special in season two.

These all just sound…awful. Wait, have they given LMM the arse from HDM yet?

  • ohnoray-av says:

Willow is nice that it’s family oriented, I wonder how trying to reach that demographic in a series will fare out.

Wait a sec… I know it’s been a long-ass time since I watched Supernatural, but I could have SWORE that that John Winchester didn’t take up hunting until AFTER Sam was born and Mary was killed?

    • lmh325-av says:

Nope, he didn’t. It was actively hidden from him so that when his wife died he had no idea what was happening or what to do. This was reinforced over and over and over again.

While The Witcher might not have scratched the same epic fantasy itch that was left after Game of Thrones ended, it was still pretty fun. I thought that the second season was better than the first, and thus I’m looking forward to its spinoff.Good Omens was fun, a decent adaptation of one of my favorite books. With Neil Gaiman on board with season 2, I’m cautiously optimistic even though I generally like Terry Pratchett’s writing a lot better than Gaiman’s.I like the idea of a Willow continuation, though it would have been nice if Val Kilmer could have participated. What could have been. While I’m not a vampire enthusiast, the bit on Interview With the Vampire made me chuckle. “So what does this adaptation of a beloved book and subsequent beloved movie bring to the table?” “Gayness!” Maybe that’s the sort of thing that does, in fact, serve as a selling point for people who like this franchise.

As I recall, Gaiman initially said there wouldn’t be a sequel. I guess truckloads of Amazon cash helped change his mind.Still, I’m glad we’re getting another season, it was a great show.

Are you sure he meant “There won’t be a season 2″ instead of “A second season hasn’t been commissioned yet, because we don’t know how well the first one will do”?Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett plotted the sequel to Good Omens in the 80s, they just never got round to writing it. Gaiman has also stated that Terry Pratchett wanted him to tell the entire story, not just the published part, in a TV series. There may not have been definitive plans for season 2, when season one came out, but the seeds were already planted. The angels in the TV show aren’t in the book, but they’re part of its never written sequel. They were inserted for potential later use. There’s enough plot for a third season, too, according to Neil Gaiman, although it hasn’t been commissioned by Amazon yet.Lets hope that season 2 does well in 2023.

        • saltier-av says:

Gaiman initially said it would be too painful to finish a sequel after Pratchett’s death. He died in 2015, so it’s entirely possible Gaiman changed his mind after he’d grieved his friend’s passing.

        • saltier-av says:

“It took some time to land the renewal, but not because Prime Video wasn’t sure about it. Gaiman didn’t initially want to create a second season since the second story was unfinished before Sir Terry Pratchett’s death.”https://amazonadviser.com/2022/07/20/will-season-2-good-omens-happen/

I thought it was patchy – Tennant and Sheen were excellent, as was Jon Hamm, but the rest of it was pretty average.

    • saltier-av says:

It was always a subtext, but considering these were 18th century vampires I don’t think they’d be all that open about it. LeStat was explicitly bisexual in the books and refers to Louis as his lover. While the movie portrayed Louis and LeStat more as like partners in crime, the interaction between Louis and Armand had definite homosexual overtones.

    • lmh325-av says:

The Vampire Chronicles books are very homoerotic. It seems like that might be the only thing they kept from the books so a big left swing there to change everything else, but keep the gay. I’m hoping it’s for the best.

  • teligyerek-av says:

It’s still 2023. We didn’t wrap until March. It won’t be ready in 2022.Neil Gaiman on his Tumblr, when asked about a fall release of Good Omens 2. It has unfortunately no business being on this list.

  • luasdublin-av says:

Nothing really looks good out of those…..Willow maybe.

  • twoliterturbo-av says:

Looks like I’ll be passing on Interview. I was ok with the queer subtext but having it be full on text is just not something I’m interested in. That said I hope it is good for the queer community.

How is “Winx” supposed to be pronounced? “Winks”? “Win ex”?

    Ron Howard’s beloved Willow

A phrase no one would have written before Disney greenlit a Willow series.

  • lmh325-av says:

I want Interview with the Vampire to be great. They’re gonna have to win me over though after the most recent trailer. The change in century? I can live with it even if I think it was mostly a cost cutting measure.Jacob Anderson? I actually think a great potential Louis.Sam Reid? They need to style his hair better, but okay.Daniel Malloy being 60+ instead of in his 20s? I suspect is a long game to roll the character in with David Talbot and not the end of the world. The decision to make Claudia’s character 14 and played by a 19 year old? Given Claudia being under 10 is pretty much *the* catalyst for most of the second and third acts of the novel, I’m very much not sold. Making her 14 is one thing, but having her played by a 19 year old makes the suspension of disbelief that she couldn’t just go off on her own that much harder. It also seems like another cost saving, practical choice of not having a minor. All of the decisions together make me think that they should have just made a new vampire show and not made it an existing IP.

“Winx” makes methinks this show involves twinks. Therefore shame prevents me from clicking anywhere near it.

  • saratin-av says:

Does anyone know if the Willow show is going to follow the book series Chris Claremont wrote as a followup at all?  That series was actually pretty solid.

  • mrchuchundra-av says:

Season 2 of Warrior Nun should be coming out in late Fall or early Winter. Not a big name show, but a reasonable amount of fun.
