Fall 2023 film preview: The season’s 26 most anticipated films

From the horrific (The Exorcist: Believer) to the historic (Napoleon) to the heroic (The Marvels) here are all the movies we can't wait to see this fall

For those who embraced the summer of 2023’s great pop culture phenomenon, Barbenheimer, not only would the cast and crew of each film like to thank you, but so would the entire movie industry. Because Barbie and Oppenheimer almost singlehandedly (doublehandedly?) saved the summer from a lot of underperforming films, including The Flash, Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, Haunted Mansion, three R-rated comedies—No Hard Feelings, Joy Ride, and Strays—and the presumably surefire hit, Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One. And even though 2023’s summer slate looks to crest the $4 billion mark for the first time since the pandemic, history will not look back fondly on most of this season’s movies.

So now that our summer of general disappointment is nearly behind us, it’s time for the fall movie season. Per usual, that means less bombast and more awards contenders like Killers Of The Flower Moon and Napoleon. But this fall also sees a promising collection of elevated horror films (The Nun II, The Exorcist: Believer), franchise sequels and extensions (A Haunting In Venice, The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes) and only one Marvel film (The Marvels) which, given our cultural exhaustion with the multiverse, feels like a vacation.

Given the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, some of these release dates might shift, since what’s the point of releasing Dumb Money next month if Pete Davidson can’t promote it by playing Wheel of Musical Impressions on The Tonight Show? So take these fall dates with a grain of salt and, if they stick, take that grain of salt to a movie theater and sprinkle it on your popcorn.

THE NUN II | OFFICIAL TRAILER

Cast: Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons, Storm Reid, Anna PopplewellDirector: Michael Chaves“I think there’s something here that’s not meant to be,” the fearful voice says in the trailer to . Those dire words certainly don’t refer to the existence of this follow-up to 2018’s successful original and the latest extension of the Conjuring franchise. The new film features Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) once again crossing demonic paths with the demon Valak, who was first seen in The Conjuring 2. Figure lots of rustling leaves, flickering lights, and portentous religious iconography will power this sequel, directed by franchise go-to Michael Chaves, who gave us series low point The Curse Of La Llorona and the pretty good The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. What gets us hopeful for The Nun II is that it’s co-written by Akela Cooper, the screenwriter of M3GAN. There are two other writers credited on The Nun II, but if the film—which takes place in France in 1956—features an evil, lifelike robot doll, that was probably Cooper’s idea. [Mark Keizer]

Scorsese, Fincher, Payne…and a whole bunch of stuff that looks like re-hashed garbage. I don’t think we can blame the strike for all of this.

I think ‘Napoleon’ will also suffer in comparison to Abel Gance’s 1927 version, where the first half of his career was shown across 5ish hours (depending on the cut) to brilliant effect. I’m sure Scott’s loud, macho, nuance-free, exposition-and-CGI-fest won’t be a fraction as good in half that runtime.

Flower Moon could get me to a theater… Wish Eli had done Thanksgiving sooner. The fake trailer cast was great & it worked well for Machete.

Wonder if DeSantis will allow this movie to be shown in Florida…can’t let us white folk feel too bad about what we did in the past!

So, is anyone else experiencing this website’s exciting new level of jank where the “Load more comments” button on articles does absolutely nothing?

    • thepetemurray-darlingbasinauthorithy-av says:

On mobile, yes. On desktop (Opera), no.

    • josephl-tries-again-av says:

I’d have just hit the star to signal agreement, but that’s not working for me either.

    • dirtside-av says:

*raises hand*I also can’t star posts, and I’m having a lot of trouble actually publishing comments, too. God knows if this one will work.

    • tigrillo-av says:

The button often opens up a new tab for some advertiser, for me.  Even if the advertiser’s promo is nowhere near the button, “Load more comments” still repeatedly redirects me.

    • bassplayerconvention-av says:

Yesterday yes— and the stars not working, and even posting comments was a grotesque misadventure— but it seems to be working again for me now. How long this state of affairs will last, who knows.

  • nemo1-av says:

I didn’t even know there was a 2nd Fat Greek Wedding lol

Stop trying to make Pete Davidson happen. It’s not going to happen.

  • canadian-heritage-minute-av says:

First of all, The Exorcist 3 is great. Second, the first and third of Green’s Halloween movies are great. Get a grip.

This list seems less like “most anticipated” and more like “happen to be coming out”

For real. Is anyone excited for another one of Branagh’s Poirot movies? Death on the Nile was actively awful. It wasn’t just a bad movie. It was an offensively bad movie. It made Murder on the Orient Express seem worse in retrospect. Maybe I’ll be wrong and this next one will finally put it all together. But I don’t have great faith. Orient Express was average but felt like more because of the A-list cast. Death on the Nile was painful. My mother is the world’s most uncritical movie watcher. Anything, no matter how bad, is “good” or “a nice time.” And 45 minutes into Death on the Nile she paused it and said, “This is a bad movie, right?” And I was like yes, you are correct.

      • bassplayerconvention-av says:

There was no actual death on the Nile until at least halfway through, if I remember my not-paying-full-attention-because-this-shit-was-boring watch a few months ago correctly. I think they may not have even reached the Nile until 45 minutes in.

      • dreadpirateroberts-ayw-av says:

Yeah…. I like Branagh as a director. I like him as an actor. But Death on the Nile was actively bad. I hated some of the story changes, and an opening MUSTACHE ORIGIN STORY? SERIOUSLY? Talk about self indulgent…I am even more dubious about the next one. The original story is just set in England and is set around a Halloween party (hence the original title of the book). It centers around the potential childhood memory of a murder, and has a few “spooky” moments due to its setting at the party (which Poirot immediately blows off as ridiculous on a Scooby Doo level). Setting it in Venice and making it more of a horror story just seems to be desperate to “do something different”.

        • tmontgomery-av says:

“… and an opening MUSTACHE ORIGIN STORY? SERIOUSLY?” At one time I wished to direct a movie version of “Count of Monte Cristo” and include a sequence where Edmond and Abbe find time to invent the sandwich while imprisoned in the Chateau d’If.

I thought Priscilla Presley was 13 when she met the king, and 15 when she moved to Graceland to live with him. But either way, that film sounds enticing.

  • h3rm35-av says:

“maybe the poster has some serious Star Wars vibes, but Edwards hasn’t done us wrong yet, so we’re cautiously optimistic that he’ll turn in another solid film.”The movie poster has zero to do with Edwards, it’s created by the studio’s promotions and marketing dept. to pique interest and sell tickets, and what sci-fi IP interests a lot of people and sells a lot of tickets?
You write a damn pop-culture website. Get you isht together.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

what are you even arguing against here? that’s essentially what they say. i swear there’s been a gas leak in the comments section.

    • simplepoopshoe-av says:

Lol what…? That quote doesn’t attribute the poster art to Edwards… The poster sentence and the sentence about cautious optimism aren’t directly connected. An observation is being made and then definitive statement about the overall of the film… lol yo I haven’t even had coffee why am I explaining how sentences work to you. Oof Sundays.

    • laurenceq-av says:

No one said Gareth designed the poster.

  • sketchesbyboze-av says:

Is anyone else weirdly excited about The Holdovers?

  • jonathanmichaels--disqus-av says:

We shall see how it goes with the two Fassbender movies with people on Twitter reminding everyone about his abuse allegations.Same with Amy Schumer, since those same discussions have brought up her mentioning the time she had sex with a man while he was passed out.

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

I don’t see the point of this list until the strikes are over. If they’re shifting dates like Dune 2 I’m not holding my breath for any films this year :(I’m jaded from CONSTANTLY updating my film calendar during COVID. So many times I’d be like “awe man that film comes out this week!” “Oh nvm next year”.

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

Wait Dead Reckoning underperformed? Well ya’ll missed out that shit slaps

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

Cindy White those are normal horror films…. or are we just calling all horror “elevated” now. Come on…

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

Oh the writing is this article is awful. Bring on the AI authors already if the quality bar is this low.

  • bagman818-av says:

Isn’t this like the 3rd or 4th ‘opiod crisis’ movie in the last year or so?

  • kznate68-av says:

In a parallel dimension, Robin Williams is the featured actor in The Holdovers.

  • laurenceq-av says:

    “The Season’s 26 Most Anticipated Films.”“Here are 26 movies coming out soon.”FTFY

  • laurenceq-av says:

I feel like poor Gareth Edwards has been thrown under the bus in recent years over Rogue One while the media fawns endlessly over how Gilroy “saved” the movie.Yeah, I’m sure Gilroy did a lot and “Andor” certainly speaks to his high level of talent regarding Star Wars. But give poor Gareth a break.  I’m sure there’s still a lot of good stuff in Rogue One that we can thank him for.

  • jgp1972-av says:

You have a strange definition of “much anticipated”. Most of these are movies noone gives a shit about.
