For TV, fall is usually the most buzzy time of the year, when network shows return, big series premiere, and, of course, the Emmys go down. Things will look slightly different in 2023, though, because of the ongoing strike by both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA against studios and networks. But there’s still some good news for viewers: Fall boasts returns like The Wheel Of Time, The Morning Show, and—yes, at last—Fargo. What’s more, you can expect some major debuts, such as a YA spin-off of The Boys, Mike Flanagan’s latest horror series, and period dramas starring Brie Larson, Matt Bomer, and Jonathan Bailey. Meanwhile, movie franchises like John Wick and Godzilla make their way to the small screen. Here is The A.V. Club’s guide to the shows you need to know about over the next three months.

The Wheel of Time Season 2 - Official Trailer | Prime Video

, Prime Video’s adaptation of Robert Jordan’s long-running book series, drops us into a high fantasy world influenced by franchises like and . (That was true even before premiered, but it’s especially true now.) Yet it has a unique set of magical rules, characters, and factions to absorb. Rosamund Pike is a captivating lead as the sorceress Moiraine, who’s dealing with the loss of her powers and the discovery of the Dragon Reborn (Josha Stradowski’s Rand al’Thor) in season two. If you haven’t read the books, we’d suggest a rewatch of the first season to re-familiarize yourself with the World of the Wheel before diving into the second, which will further expand the lore. And still no word on the back half of Doom Patrol, Season 4.

    • luasdublin-av says:

I know , other than Loki it’s the only (hopefully) upcoming show I’m interested in. AFAIK it’s complete but just not aired yet.

  • docnemenn-av says:

Can’t lie, the fact that Nicholas Lyndhurst is inexplicably in the Frasier reboot / legacyquel / whatever the fuck we’re calling them these days is the main if not only reason I’m interested in it. Frasier Crane and Rodney Trotter. Good or bad, I have to know.

    • alferd-packer-av says:

I hope they call his character Dave.

    • luasdublin-av says:

I mean he was also timetraveller Gary Sparrow in possibly the world’s only Bigamy /Timetravel show Goodnight Sweetheart *,which ran for around 7 seasons so he has that going for him.(*Comedy Scifi sitcoms seems to be a uk thing , that other than Futurama and the show about the timetravelling holdall that lasted half a season the US never really embraced)

Am I wrong or was Season 4 of Fargo kinda bad? Not terrible but easily the weakest season. Personally I’m a Season 2 man myself and not just because Bruce Campbell played Ronald Reagan to perfection.

    • bagman818-av says:

It was definitely the weakest season thus far.

    • kped45-av says:

Haven’t tried it yet, but i found season 3 weak, so hopefully 4 is better than that. 3 had a great cast (as always), looked great….but just didn’t ever feel like it went anywhere.

    • bio-wd-av says:

I liked it more then most due to really liking Jessie Buckley and the fact her character was blatantly based on Jane Toppan who was in my thesis paper in college.  But it was undeniably a step down compared to season 1 and 2, 3 was already not not my favorite.  Highlight was the tornado episode.

    • robgrizzly-av says:

Season 2 is my favorite for sure (Kirsten Dunst was robbed!). I like the ideas in Season 4 more than I actually liked the events that transpired. I wanted to see Chris Rock be a crime boss, and there’s barely any of that. I still might take it over Season 3, though.

YOOOOOO an animated Scott Pilgrim show? Fucking finally!

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

Invincible and Scott Pilgrim… I need to put pants on.

  • bagman818-av says:

You’re suggesting we re-watch season 1 of Wheel of Time? I barely made it through the first season. I’m hopeful S2 might do a better job of keeping me conscious.

  • bio-wd-av says:

First off, what the hell happened to Masters of the Air? Why can’t it consistently get a released date.Second, I’m actually excited for Our Flag Means Death.  I didn’t particularly love season 1, and my reasons for being excited are backhanded at best.  But in a peer reviewed paper I wrote back in March I sarcastically said Anne Bonny will probably be in season 2.  Well she is and its Minnie Driver playing her.  With how interesting the historiography war has been with her, I gotta see how the interpretation goes.

  • drew8mr-av says:

Well, one definite and 2 maybes out of 33 shows. About average I’d say.

  • usernameorwhatever-av says:

Really upset that that show Found isn’t a decades-later sequel to Lost.

  • captain-splendid-av says:

“The limited series explores variations on real-world events like the rise of the American mafia and the Winter of Discontent”Huh, that sounds like a clever use of a cash-grab tv show. Might have to check it out.
“and the ensemble includes…Mel Gibson”Never mind.

True statistic: 1 in 4 articles from the AV Club is a slideshow.

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Just noticed that in that photo above with that lighting, Loki looks like Data with long hair and a suit.

  • robgrizzly-av says:

They made a show called “Found” and it’s not related to “Lost”? Come on.I am eagerly anticipating The Fall of House Usher, All the Light We Cannot See, and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which looks like the best thing ever.
I have my concerns about The Continental, Gen V, and Frasier all likely to miss the point of what made the first ones work.
Not gonna lie, I would have watched Mr and Mrs Smith for Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
In hindsight, the Echo spinoff may have been premature. Just feels like terrible timing. It further inundates the genre with superheroes no one was asking for, which further pushes the my fatigue.
The Changeling looks good, and even though The Bachelor isn’t my thing, I think what they’re doing is really interesting. Will audiences be able to stand old women getting their hearts broken? That seems sad to me, compared to young gold diggers. Unless… Is it still young gold diggers??

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

…There’s six Scott Pilgrim books and this is drawn in the original style of the books but sure let’s call this unnecessary and not overdue.

  • joseiandthenekomata-av says:

As fun as the movie was, Scott Pilgrim really did need a remake to give the second half of the story more room to breathe, and lend more nuance to the titular character and Ramona’s lives and flaws.

  • captjackhaddock-av says:

a 60 slide slideshow? You crazy for this one, AV Club

  • devinoch-av says:

It’ll be interesting to see if Scott Pilgrim Takes Off shifts the ending to be more in line with how the books ended. No shade thrown at Wright – the last book was just getting started when they were filming, so there’s a lot different about the ending.

    • joseiandthenekomata-av says:

With this reboot, I’d be surprised if they didn’t go with the comics’ ending.
Also of note is it will consist of eight episodes, which seems small to cover six books. But from what little I remember of the plot it might be doable. Or it could just be the episode count for the first part of the series.

  • stupidbabiesneedthemostattention-av says:

You’ve got American Dad listed twice on the final slide.  I think you meant Family Guy for the second listing

  • nilus-av says:

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is one of the best movies of the last two decades“Counter point.  Nope

    • luasdublin-av says:

I love popculture/video game stuff , and been a fan of  Edgar Wrights stuff ( since Spaced) and I’d rather have root canal than watch Pilgrim again. I don’t understand why everyone loves a movie full of smug unlikeable hipster arsehole characters.
