For this lonely New Year’s, a party playlist with the sounds of revelry baked right in

It’s been true throughout the entire pandemic: One of the activities that could most alleviate our prolonged isolation—getting together! With lots of people! At a party!—is one of the most dangerous, and one that would only further prolong said isolation. So, no New Year’s Eve parties this year. It’s best, as it’s been since March, to just stay home. But that doesn’t mean it has to sound like people aren’t doing it up in your less-than-packed house or apartment. [Infomercial voice]: What if we told you that we’d assembled a playlist where the sounds of a party are in the songs themselves? That’s right, when these tracks were recorded in the studio, the artists decided to add in some party noises: people talking or cheering or clinking glasses or singing along. Unsurprisingly, many of these songs are about parties—parties that get out of control or that you have to leave because you drank too much. Or they’re what you’d play at a party to get some dancing going. (If “Soul Finger” doesn’t do it for you, please check your pulse.) Others sound like musicians merely playing to a live audience: a rock band in a bar, a crooner in a trattoria, or a group of dudes breaking out into a jam session, albeit a very good one, in your living room.

So while nobody should be celebrating at a house party or inside their neighborhood bar this New Year’s, that doesn’t mean it can’t sound like it. Scroll down to listen to the playlist on Spotify, and as they say, please enjoy responsibly.

Is this how we do it? No, it is not how we do it. This list is neither an OG mack nor a wanna be player as it somehow forgets Montell Jordan. Not much flavor at all.

There must be a playlist somewhere on Spotify of the Best Songs That End in a Smallish Room of People Clapping. Like you’re in a private garage show or something.

And end it with Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians doing “Auld Lang Syne”.

This song immediately came to mind when I saw the headline.

Okay, the meta picture from the Shining (a story of a man going crazy in isolation) got a big chuckle from me. I suspect the photo was the reason for the article. When I was young, when the Beach Boys were singing the song ‘Barbara Ann’ I thought they were singing the nonsense phrase ‘bobba-ran’.

I spent New Year’s Eve 2019 eating overpriced comedy club “dinner” and watching bad standup about “Cotton Eyed Joe” so this may be the one area where 2020 may actually be an improvement.

Might I suggest “Gimme Shelter” because it has Mick Jagger hooting in appreciation of Merry Clayton’s amazing vocals, and also this year has been a complete fucking horror show.BTW, that’s a July 4th ball you got pictured there.Or for some levity, “Have a Cigar” which ends with a party.

This seems to be as good a place as any to ask, but does anyone know what happened with Green Day last night on FOX’s horrible, terrible, not very good Toast and Roast NYE thing? To be clear, every single NYE show we flipped past sucked harder than the last, but we thought that being of a certain age, something from Green Day would make up for what seemed to be weak music lineups on every channel. And FOX teased that all night, to the point that we thought we had missed their performance while ringing in the New Year, but after teasing and teasing, at the absolute last minute the performance becomes a pre-recorded performance that of some weird b-side that was obviously recorded before the pandemic.
The whole thing was just weird. There has to be a story waiting to be told.

Somewhere around Anderson Cooper’s third or fourth tequila shot Cheri Oteri made an appearance as Barbara Walters and it was hilarious!
