Fox’s Animation Domination block (do they still call it that?) is going to continue animating dominating for at least two more years, with Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, and Family Guy all getting renewed for two additional seasons each today. That will keep all of them on the air through 2025 and will extend The Simpsons’ record for the longest-running scripted series in TV history. This will cover seasons 35 and 36 for The Simpsons (three more and the show will have been on for as long as Homer Simpson has been alive, which is confusing), seasons 14 and 15 for Bob’s Burgers, and season 22 and 23 for Family Guy.

In a statement (via Variety), Fox’s president of scripted programming, Michael Thorn, said, “Three-plus decades of The Simpsons, more than two decades of Family Guy and over a decade of Bob’s Burgers proves the enduring power of the animation genre on our network and the infinite fan affinity for these outrageously funny comedy classics.” Saying “infinite fan affinity” seems bold, but hey, people are still watching all of these shows, regardless of whether or not anyone thinks they stopped being good decades ago.

Also, if any Animation Domination fans are curious about The Great North, the younger sibling of these three shows, it was renewed for a fourth season back in August when co-creators Wnedy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (the ones who look like the Mario brothers in the end credits!) signed a multi-year development deal with Fox. It stands to reason that the network will want to keep them happy, then, so The Great North is probably relatively safe for the foreseeable future—which is good, because the show is a lot of fun. Maybe it can run for 36 seasons too?

The thing that most makes me feel old is seeing that American Dad and Bob’s Burgers and now some of the longest-running scripted tv shows of all time

They should cancel two of them

The ratings for Simpsons seasons have been declining for the past 20 years, although it was pretty gentle in the last 2-3 years. I can’t imagine them ever cancelling it unless the brand itself becomes obscure, and that doesn’t seem to have happened yet (although I don’t really get the impression that the show has gotten a whole new cohort of younger fans, like what happened with Friends).
If they ever do cancel it, they shouldn’t just do one single series finale episode. It should be an entire season of different would-be finales, bringing back old writers and characters.
Weird to think The Simpsons was already a long-running prime-time show that had thoroughly stamped itself on popular culture by the time Family Guy started, and now the latter show is going into its 22nd season. That makes me feel old, whereas The Simpsons being old doesn’t because that show feels like it’s just been around forever.

American Dad is better than all three of them (yes I include Bob’s Burgers in that).

The last couple of seasons of The Simpsons have actually been good. Not just “by modern standards” either. That said, they really should end it. I guess they are determined to have one of the main voice actors die of old age first.

I feel like the pandemic and writing from home really opened the team up, creatively. Like they set up their home offices and said, “screw it, I’m finally going to write that idea I had where it’s Fargo but Ned Flanders.”I say keep it going, even if it declines again. At this point, it’s more of a tradition than a show. It’s going to feel weird when it’s just not around anymore. Also, I’d sure like to see Family Guy and South Park get cancelled first so there’s no chance of them going for the record.

Not really following Simpsons and Family guy anymore. Too many “meh” episodes from them.Bob’s Burgers and The Great North is awesome though.
    Looking forward to Futurama!

I love Bob’s Burgers to death but I honestly don’t know why it’s going to be around for at least 15 seasons. I had assumed it was just going to end with the movie because the series had already gone pretty stale but it just keeps going. It started out as a great show and still has some great writing, but maybe around, I don’t know, season 7 it just kind of started becoming a background show. Nothing new, it’s just there.
