In retrospect, it had been a suspiciously long time since we heard anything about FX’s cursed Y: The Last Man adaptation. We should never leave this thing alone for too long or, well, the film version of it falls apart, or the showrunners of the TV version quit, or any of the other countless things that have gone wrong with this project since we started hearing about it a decade ago. This time—and really it’s our fault as much as anything—the series has lost Barry Keoghan, who was set to star as Yorick Brown (a.k.a. the eponymous last man himself). This comes from Collider, and while a reason for Keoghan’s departure hasn’t been given, the Collider story’s extensive list of his recent film and TV credits implies that Keoghan may have just found a better offer somewhere else (he was in Dunkirk, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, and Chernobyl, and he’ll appear in Marvel’s Eternals).

Y: The Last Man just got a new showrunner, The Killing’s Eliza Clark, and Keoghan’s role will be recast—which presumably means it will get bumped back once again, but FX could always get lucky. It has literally never happened with this project, but you never know. Central character aside, Y: The Last Man still has the rest of its very good cast, including Amber Tamblyn, Diane Lane, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Marin Ireland, and Juliana Canfield. The series is based on the comic of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra, and it’s about the planet’s lone surviving man roaming a post-apocalyptic Earth with his pet monkey. Keoghan would’ve played that man, and the monkey from Friends is playing that monkey… at least as far as we know. It could’ve been recast at this point.

He doesn’t look anything like Yorick anyway.

  • gaith-av says:

Oh, no! Where else will FX find a non-American/accented actor with a singularly distinct look to play an American guy who (for thematic purposes) should probably look blandly handsome?!

    • paulkinsey-av says:

Yeah. I like Barry Keoghan a lot, but that was a weird casting choice.

    • alexpkavclub-av says:

Yep. I thought his casting was a bizarre choice from the get-go for that reason. Yorick should look like a pretty generic American whiteboy. This dude is INTERESTING looking. Like, you’d wonder why every character he encounters on his journey isn’t asking him what the deal is with his face.

      Kenny Loggins?

    • luasdublin-av says:

In fairness Hollywoo tends to cast Americans and Brits in all the Irish roles , so Irish Actors and Actresses have to go play Americans ( yes Into the Badlands  and Supergirl , I’m talking to you)

    • akinjaguy-av says:

You can just pick any male from Everybody Wants Some and get a basic lead for this show.  Maybe not Hoechlin or russel, because they are already generically handsome white guys in series, but there are a bunch of other ones there.

There are “unfilmable” properties and then there are the “never gonna get filmed-able” ones.

I’m still incredibly skeptical ex machina is gonna get made even with Oscar Isaac backing it. So much of BKV’s work was talked about in reference to getting adapted when he was on his streak of great stuff in the early-mid 00’s but none of it other than Runaways ever happend

    • dirtside-av says:

It’s the difference between unfilmable, non-filmable, and infilmable.

I just…I can’t understand why Y is so hard to make happen. Talk about a premise made for the times, with an elevator pitch that basically goes, “Orange Is the New Black meets The Walking Dead.”Are they doing Ampersand as a full CGI creation? Is that what it is?

      • Kaz13-av says:

It’s like the MOST filmable of any of those BIG “Indy” comics. Like, we’ve gotten TWO Watchmen adaptations, a lackluster Preacher (which is a crime that it wasn’t better), but NOTHING for Y? Like, this, 100 Bullets, and Transmetropolitan are begging to be made. And I’d be fine never hearing about Sandman again, because it IS unfilmable, and shouldn’t be touched. But Y should be SO easy.

Weirdly, I think Hollywood’s already awful track record for adaptations is even worse for adaptations that should have been slam dunks. I mean, how do you screw up League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? They could have shot the comic scene-for-scene and line-for-line and it would have been a good movie. But no…

  • taumpytearrs-av says:

Fuck you The Killing! ahh, it feels nice to dust off a meme from ye olden days. Man, I am amazed they are still trying to make this show happen. I will always hope for the best as a fan of the comic, but not many projects in comics, tv, movie or video games go through this much development hell and come out good. Also, that feller sure is funny lookin’.

    • noisetanknick-av says:

This article was a wave of emotions, from “Hey, they lost the weird looking guy as the lead!” to “Oh, no, keep literally everybody* involved with The Killing away from this show.

      *Except Kacey Rohl.”

Wish the AV Club would review Fortunate Son

      • teageegeepea-av says:

What has Rohl been up to since Hannibal? I thought that last season misused her, but then it misused everything.

        • delete-my-kinja-av says:

Occasional guest star on The Magicians, and currently on some Canadian show. Also a positive delight on Instagram.

          • teageegeepea-av says:

I remember NBC briefly imported a Canadian family sitcom called Working the Engels that she was on. One half of the family, including her, was decent, but the other was so broad that they didn’t all seem to belong on the same show.

  • highandtight-av says:

    So Yorick has been un-Barry’d?Alas.

  • presidentzod-av says:

Dave “Coach Dave” Daubenmire would like those producer sinners that he is available. He’ll keep keep a stiff one-eye on all those filthy Whores of the Apocalypse..

  • kaingerc-av says:

I wonder what will come out first, this or that ‘Uncharted’ movie.

  • tylerstravis-av says:

Mark that one up to the win column!

  • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

    BARRY WHAT DID YOU DO?

  • dremiliolizardo-av says:

They could probably hire Channing Tatum if he weren’t so busy with “Gambit.”

  • seanpiece-av says:

Sigh. Fine. FINE. I’ll do it. But you’ll really owe me one here, FX.

  • bags-of-mush-av says:

    creepy lookin dude

  • bartfargomst3k-av says:

Well, he’s usually in the last place you look.

  • returning-the-screw-av says:

Man. I was looking forward to him. He was dope.

  • haodraws-av says:

I kinda want Supergirl’s Jeremy Jordan for the role, but he’s not bland-looking like Yorick’s supposed to be.

  • qwedswa-av says:

If you want this thing done, you’ll have to change it to X: The Last Woman
