Kenneth Branagh is taking the reins on another star-studded Agatha Christie murder mystery that’ll make yet another case against luxury transportation. Per IndieWire, the full cast for the screen adaptation of Christie’s Death On The Nile was announced as production commenced and like 2017's Murder On The Orient Express, the cast is a carousel of major names. Branagh will direct and star as Detective Hercule Poirot alongside co-stars Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright. Bateman will reprise his role of Bouc from Orient Express.

Branagh released a statement regarding the project:

“Crimes of passion are dangerously sexy. Agatha Christie has written a riveting story of emotional chaos and violent criminality and Michael Green [screenwriter for Orient Express] has once again written a screenplay to match. With a cherished group of long-time artistic collaborators and a brilliant international cast, it is truly a pleasure to join Disney, Fox and Agatha Christie, Ltd. in bringing this daring thriller to the big screen. There are significant new twists, an awe-inspiring desert landscape and a chance to celebrate big screen entertainment in glorious 65 millimetre celluloid!”

Death On The Nile sets sail in theaters October 9, 2020.

And shot in 65mm!!  That’s the real star.

I’m seeing Murder on 70mm next weekend at a film festival, I’m really looking forward to it, (and the 35mm presentation of Pulp Fiction amongst others).

“significant new twists” godDAMNit Branaugh. I hate that studios are throwing feature film-level budgets at his shitty-ass interpretations of Christie.

I was a little thrown by the semi twist that Sir Ken did for Orient Express. I’m dubious about how he’ll be able to the the same for Nile.

I was a little thrown by the semi twist that Sir Ken did for Orient Express. I’m dubious about how he’ll be able to the the same for Nile. Wait, was it more of a twist than the original story, or a different one? Do I have to see it now?

I got as far into the article as Branaugh then immediately went to post “Goddamnit!” myself. Happy to see someone else was on it. Goddamnit. Goddamnit.

Branagh and Christie are as great a combo as Branagh and Shakespeare!

  • geralyn-av says:

Why does Branaugh do this? Does he really think throwing in some stupid and completely unrealistic twist to the time period is going to beat the 1978 version. Or that his cast is honestly a match for Peter Ustinov, Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Angela Lansbury, Mia Farrow & David Niven, George Kennedy and Jack Warden? Honestly just watching those two smooth old pros, Ustinov and Niven, work together is be better than anything Branaugh will do with his entire movie.

Counter point French and Saunders are in this, so that immediately peaks my interest.Though I guess that means it’s less likely we’ll get a spoof version on any forthcoming Christmas special those two plan to do.

      • geralyn-av says:

Okay I like both French and Saunders as much as the next person but the movie still also has Branaugh.  So still not interested.

And it’s going to look beautiful and SUUUUUUUUCCCCCK just as bad as his “Murder on the Orient Express”.Utter trash. At least the trash-y Ustinov version was fun and at least didn’t play stupid games like this new version, with it’s new twists, likely will, based on what Branagh’s bullshit was in “Express”.

I would be more excited for this if Murder on the Orient Express hadn’t been, you know, terrible.

  • enemiesofcarlotta-av says:

Well, this ought to be good, especially since I can’t fully remember the ending the way I already knew it for Orient Express (which I still enjoyed).

  • stevie-jay-av says:

Jews, niggers and panderers. Just grand!

  • coret-av says:

Oh, Letitia Wright. No. I was hoping for much better things for her.

  • steinjodie-av says:

So much animosity in the comments toward Branaugh, and it baffles me. I have liked many of his films as a director (Dead Again, Much Ado About Nothing…) and almost all of his acting (especially Wallender).  I admit that I didn’t see his Poirot, but I’m not a huge Christie fan.
