Gene Yang and Sonny Liew have [CENSORED] words for their cartooning hero

Aux Features Books

The Internet features more than its share of negativity and snark—sometimes you’ve just gotta vent. But there’s plenty of room for love, too. With Fan Up, we ask pop-culture people we admire to tell us about something they really, really like. For Comics Week, some of our favorite comics artists are paying tribute to books that inspired them.

The fans: Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew—two creators that write and draw their own work while also working with collaborators—team up on this summer’s The Shadow Hero graphic novel for First Second, detailing the origin of forgotten Golden Age comics character The Green Turtle, the first Asian-American superhero. With Yang writing and Liew on art, they create a riveting look at the Chinese immigrant experience in early 20th-century America, reintroducing a hero that will hopefully have further life beyond this first graphic novel. For their Comics Week Fan Up, Yang and Liew salute Canadian cartoonist Chester Brown.
