Get Involved, Internet: Help Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk make a new web series

Aux Features TV

Shot in the dark here: Anyone heard of a show called Firefly? Apparently it was about space cowboys or something? Well, apparently that show created a friendship between actors Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, who have now launched an Indiegogo campaign to crowdfund their latest project. (And yes, they are both well known actors who might have been able to get funding through a traditional route, like a TV channel. But they have some trust issues when it comes to networks and sci-fi shows.)

The show is called Con Man, and will follow the adventures of Wray Nerely (Tudyk), a guy who starred on a cancelled-too-soon science fiction show years ago. His best friend and former co-star Jack Moore (Fillion) has gone on to widespread success, while Nerely is stuck signing autographs on the convention circuit. The series will follow Nerely through the world of conventions, comic stores, and pop culture ephemera; basically, it sounds like Extras meets Galaxy Quest, mostly because that’s how the Indiegogo campaign describes it. And the duo seems committed to getting actual people from the convention universe to portray fictionalized versions of themselves—the campaign video includes appearances from Seth Green, James Gunn, Felicia Day, and Gina Torres.

As is typical of these types of things, there are a number of rewards for people who choose to donate. Posters, T-shirts, lunch with Alan Tudyk on the set of the show—these can all be yours depending on whether you want in, or, in the case of the last item, have $10,000 laying around. They’re hoping to raise $450,000 by the end of the campaign on April 9. We’re hoping to raise the issue of whether that money couldn’t also be spent to just put Fillion and Tudyk in a house together and film them, Big Brother-style, for the rest of their lives. There is no deadline on our desire to just watch the two of them interact forever.
