A franchise powered by ectoplasm and pure nostalgia is still finding familiar ground to tread in the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire teaser trailer. The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife takes the Spengler family from Oklahoma back to New York City, the setting for the original film. This time, NYC is frozen over. But there’s still the classic firehouse and the old Ectomobile, so yeah, this is a Ghostbusters, baby, and it’s headed your way March 29, 2024.

Set to “Cruel Summer” (no, not that “Cruel Summer”), New York is hot until it’s not, and who you gonna call to solve random unexplainable weather patterns? For some reason, the Ghostbusters, old and new: Callie (Carrie Coon), Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), Trever (Finn Wolfhard), and Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd), plus the OGs Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson). The gang has to band together to combat the “death chill,” which has “the power to kill by fear itself,” Ray explains.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire also stars Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, and Annie Potts (another Ghostbusters OG). The script was co-written by Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman, who passed along the task of directing to Kenan after the success of Afterlife.

“A few years ago, my father handed me the keys to Ecto-1, and together we made Ghostbusters: Afterlife” Reitman said in a statement to Deadline in 2022, following the death of his father, Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Words will never express how grateful I am to have made a film with my father by my side. It’s now time to hand those keys to my creative partner and fellow Ghostbuster Gil Kenan, a brilliant director who will keep the Spengler spirit alive. I can only hope to provide him the same producorial care and support that my father showed me.”
