Our favorite Dream Girlfriends (because their dads are dead, so you’ll never have to meet them) are returning for another season of musical shenanigans, as Peacock has officially given a second season order to Girls5Eva. The musical comedy, which debuted just over a month ago, quickly built a following with its hilarious soundtrack of ’90s throwbacks (and one incredible Simon and Garfunkel parody—“New York Lonely Boy”) and a quartet of equally funny leads, played by Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell, and Busy Phillips. Created by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the series follows a girl group that rose to fame with one hit single during the height of boy/girl pop group mania in the ’90s. Two decades later, when a famous rapper samples their one hit song, the four remaining members of Girls5Eva reunite and try to mount a comeback.

“We are so excited to continue Girls5eva alongside this incredibly talented group of cast and producers,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “It was hard to miss the immediate fandom that was born after the launch of this series. This aspirational comeback story is filled with heart and friendship, perfectly blended with catchy-songs and humor, and delivered by an exceptionally versatile cast. We look forward to following this group’s journey as they continue to hit just the right notes.”

Peacock debuted the full eight-episode first season of Girls5Eva on May 6, followed by a soundtrack release featuring nine tracks from the series, including the eponymous theme song and the aforementioned “New York Lonely Boy,” performed by the Milk Carton Kids. There were technically 31 tracks in the first season alone—a true feat of comedic songwriting from Scardino and series songwriter, composer, and producer Jeff Richmond (aka Mr. Tina Fey).

This was on E! last night and I tried to watch it. Does it get better?  I saw the pilot, and I know they can be a little rough til the characters get established. It didn’t hook me the way 30 Rock did, but then I know Tina is only producing this, not writing. I’ve tortured myself thru three seasons of Lucifer so I imagine I can get thru a few more episdoes of Girls5Eva.

Tina herself admits the 30 Rock pilot is terrible, so it might just be a first-episode thing. I’d say give it a couple more. Also, Iis E! like some kind of testing/dumping ground for NBC stuff now? They re-ran all of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist a couple of weeks ago to try and drum up support for it.

E! is owned by Universal/Comcast whatever it is so yeah they are pushing Peacock & NBC shows. I was wondering why Modern Family, but it’s on Peacock. The best example of this working in my experience is years ago when an FX channel ran an Arrested Development Marathon the first season. I hadn’t watched it, and I realized how great it was. My friend and I still do AD quotes.

        • marshalgrover-av says:

Yeah, I knew they were under the same umbrella. I just didn’t expect a Peacock show to hit normal TV so quickly (well, other than Amber Ruffin’s show).

I wonder if Peacock is struggling to get subscribers. They were pushing it with The Office, but it’s still on Comedy Central five days a week.

And then they killed it anyway. #SaveZoeysPlaylist

I too was not impressed by the pilot, but I was won over after a few more episodes.

    • erikveland-av says:

No, it doesn’t get better. It’s an incredibly bland and forgettable comedy, which was a surprise given the talent behind it.

  • marshalgrover-av says:

That’s good to hear! I enjoyed season 1 enough to want some more. “New York Lonely Boy” and “The Splingee” have been stuck in my head for weeks.

    • heybigsbender-av says:

My favorite part: when the lead asks her son if he wants to dance with her and he excitedly yells “Alexa, play the Daily” because the theme music is his dance music of choice. Poor Lonely Boy.

I was dying. I watched the first three episodes last night and I don’t know if I was giddy from finding out my mammogram was clear, or what, but I just loved it. I could not stop laughing. I haven’t laughed like this since The Grinder. Wickie and her home with the big mantle in case she ever wins awards, and the invisible piano, Gloria naming female singers who “aren’t” dentists, watching the home improvement show from Indianapolis where a house costs $48, and Summer buying a Cameo from Kevin. “God brought us together” “No your PR people did”. So I guess I’m signing up to pay for Peacock. I hope you’re happy. Just take all my money!!!

“New York Lonely Boy” is already my song of the year. But I do wonder: Is it like 90% less funny if you never lived in New York? This show seems to have a lot of little bits of NY-centric humor that I’m not sure would land as well had I never lived there. Or is it like a multiple-levels of humor stuff like a lot of cartoons that appeal to adults and kids for different reason?

      • marshalgrover-av says:

I think the theme of the song is just universal enough (precocious only child) to transcend the NYC-based title. There’s really nothing in the song IIRC that’s really specifically about the city; I think it would work just as well if you called it “Seattle Lonely Boy” or “West Orange, NJ Lonely Boy.”

      • pomking-av says:

I’ve never lived in NYC, I live in Indianapolis, where a house costs $48, and I was lmao. And then Slattery and his IRL wife show up.  Friends of Fey really pay off, remember when he was that nutjob candidate on 30 Rock.

        • bc222-av says:

When I lived in NY I actually SAW John Slattery and his son a playground! I saw that New York Lonely Boy

          • pomking-av says:

Was that his real son? I’m such a doof I kept thinking “he has a daughter” then remembered no, that’s Roger on Mad Men. Do we think Wickie and Dawn’s brother are going to hook up? When they revealed that the younger guy she was dating was a twin and they were TikTok pranking her I about died. Renee is a Goddess.

          • bc222-av says:

Yes, I believe that was his real son indeed. And it’s totally true what he says about restaurants on corners! I’ve often refused to eat at waterfront restaurants for the exact same reason, they’re just phoning it in. But I never realized the same about corner restaurants.

  • TeoFabulous-av says:

YES!! Hopefully we’ll discover how Ashley faked her death!

    • bc222-av says:

I was convinced Ashley faked her death, so much that I thought they ruined the twist in the screencap for the season finale. Turns out, in a very small picture and when you’re looking to confirm your own theory, Vanessa Williams *kiiinda* looks like a middle-aged asian women?

    • marshalgrover-av says:

Swimming off the edge of an infinity pool is a great joke nonetheless.

    • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

We called that from Episode 1, so we’re hoping for a good pay-off.

  • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

We just finished it last night on Peacock. Then we saw some episodes on cable and thought ‘uh-oh’ they’re burning them off already. So this is great news. Fey/Carlock/Richmond’s influence is obvious (in a great way). Basically a 30 Rock soundtrack. And the small touches of Fey/Carlock with the way things are named – the eponymous group, but also the names of boy bands, etc. Classic Fey.

    • thepaddydukes-av says:

And the way the show treats it’s single Asian character (if you can even call Ashley a character), just classic Fey.

    • pomking-av says:

Yeah I saw in the pilot Dean Winters Duffy playing Sarah’s brother? and he sounds like the same character as Dennis Duffy. I was watching 30 Rock over the weekend, the episodes when Jack dates CC (Edie Falco). . I would have never taken you for a U of Tennessee sorority girl. And the Lifetime movie spoof.

      • marshalgrover-av says:

I thought the same thing about Dean. His character isn’t as stupid as Dennis, but still sleazy.

  • ijohng00-av says:

Not a complaint, but you could do a giant edit of Girls5eva, Good News, Kimmy Schmit, and 30 rock, and it would all be seamless since they are spawns of Fey/Carlock. they literally all have the same aesthetic, you wouldn’t know the difference.

    • ijohng00-av says:

Can’t wait for season 2 of Girls5eva. I hope they bring back Ashley Park’s character, like she cheated her own death or something much better than that, lol.

  • ijohng00-av says:

Renée Elise Goldsberry doing The Mask musical WAS SOOOOO FUCKING FUNNY!

    • pomking-av says:

Ooh that sounds awesome.  I dvr’ed all the episodes from E!, I’ll check it out.

    • pomking-av says:

I cannot believe the woman I fell in love with as Angelica Schuyler is playing a 90s girl band member who crawled up the ramp of a Duane Reid and owns an invisible piano.  Talk about range.
