Gizmo and Mr. Wing will lead a new Gremlins animated series

Aux Features Warner Media

For those of us who remember a youth tinged with the vague threat of finding a feasting gremlin in our kitchens, there is good news: We might get a chance to pass that trauma down to today’s young, impressionable audience. Per Variety, A Gremlins animated series is in development for WarnerMedia’s upcoming, yet-to-be-titled streaming service.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television, the series will follow a young Mr. Wing as he embarks on adventures with the friendly Mogwai, Gizmo. There isn’t much more information regarding the premise or tone just yet, but with Tze Chun – whose TV credits include Gotham and Once Upon A Time – attached to write and executive produce, the potential for a darker show is still there.

The first Gremlins film was released in 1984 and became a major box office success, leading to a sequel and an odd, but sustained fingerprint on pop culture. It also led to a pretty amazing anti-substance teen PSA for teens starring Mr. Wing and Gizmo themselves, managing an effective blend of adorable creepy.

The Gremlins series will be part of an effort to bring more in-house properties to current audiences via new content. During the recent TCA winder press tour, Turner’s chief creative officer Kevin Reilly subtly hinted that certain “crown jewels of Warner” will also eventually make their way to the WarnerMedia streaming service. No names were named, but we can guess that Friends would be among those prized properties, unless the determined folks at Netflix decide to shell out another ungodly amount to keep it in its clutches.

No Dick Miller, no Gremlins.  Those’re the rules.

No Dick Miller, no Gremlins. Those’re the rules. Good rules. I can follow those.(Also, I could follow the rules about keeping a gremlin, because I am not a five year old child. Neither was the kid in that movie [he was high school age, right?] so the movie kinda didn’t work as well for me as I guess it should have.  I kept thinking – did you not LISTEN?  what are you, stupid?)

The rule I find confusing is no feeding after midnight. Midnight is the start of the new day. Technically the whole 24 hours following is after midnight. When can you start feeding it again? Can you ever feed a Mogwai?

    The series contains potassium benzoate

“There’s a Mogwai on the side of the plane! Don’t feed it!”

How is it odd if it was a major box office success and also came out in the nostalgia sweet spot of the mid 80’s? Can’t wait to see Gizmo in the same flat, cheap animation style that everything uses now!
