Blockbusters are back in a big way this March, even if movie theaters aren’t. Many of the month’s biggest titles, including the showdown between a king of the monsters and a big-ass ape, would probably be box office behemoths during any other moment in recent history. Here and now, they’re hedging their bets, going to a few multiplexes to court the dumbass (or vaccinated) demographic while simultaneously hitting a major streaming platform for those of us who choose life over Dolby sound. Meanwhile, the content stream offered by Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, et al. flows freely. This month, it just happens to also include what may be the most loudly clamored-for director’s cut ever. (Hint: Does he bleed? He will.) Keep reading to find out what’s coming to a living room—and, yes, some theaters—near you. And before trekking out to see a movie on the big screen, please read up on the health risks.

Let’s face it we all know how Godzilla vs King Kong is gonna end…I find my biggest issue with the Legendary MonsterVerse outside of Kong: Skull Island is that the movies seem less interested in the Kaiju fights whenever they are on screen. In Godzilla (2014) King of the Monster’s the majority of the time whenever the Kaiju are smashing stuff they either cut away from it and we just see the aftermath (Though that was more of a problem in the former than the latter.) or they’re just in the background and the camera focuses on the humans.Contrast this with Kong: Skull Island. When Kong is on screen, Kong is always what the camera is centered on. The Kaiju’s are the reason I came to see the movie and I want to see them fight. Also I want to see Charles Dance pilot Mecha Godzilla!

The only modern director that understood the joy of this sort thing was Del Toro.  Pacific Rim is the perfect Kaiju movie. Its big silly fun

    • soylent-gr33n-av says:

Whenever King Kong isn’t on screen, the other characters should ask, “where’s Kong?”

      • galvatronguy-av says:

And then immediately say “oh there he is, he’s that skyscraper sized gorilla to the left, don’t know how I missed him”

    • Smurph-av says:

King of Monsters had plenty of on-screen in-focus Kaiju fights. Almost too much. My problem with it was that it also had way too much “Humans run from Kaiju that is actively trying to kill them specifically, are successful”. Godzilla 2014 worked IMO because it was mostly humans trying to avoid Kaiju that didn’t care about them. If a 1000 ft tall monster wants you dead and all you have to do is run away or hop in a car to get away, it loses some impact.

It was even said, quite often, there would be less human scenes in the last Godzilla flick. Bold-faced lies.

    • hamologist-av says:

What I really love about Godzilla is that you can have people like yourself who are deep into Godzilla lore, and people like me who just want to nerd out on the Godzilla punching buildings and other large creatures effects, and we’re all just united in a shared love of Godzilla.

      • laserface1242-av says:

Oh I’m not a Godzilla expert, I mostly fall into the same category as you. I just happen to be a comic geek who knew about his crossover with the Marvel Universe.

    • ruefulcountenance-av says:

I loved Skull Island, the first 10 minutes had Kong turning up and just wrecking the joint, like the filmmakers knew exactly why the previous Godzilla film had been such a big pile of wank. For that reason, I’m hoping Kong paints the ring with Godzilla in this new one.

I have never seen Coming to America and my wife found this out yesterday and now claims that I must not be from this planet.  She wanted to watch the sequel so I suppose I should give it a watch

    • slbronkowitzpresents-av says:

It’s worth it. Eddie as a Akeem is really engaging. But the movie is kind of the “beginning of the end” in that he realized he could play a movie’s cast almost entirely by himself.

    • puddingangerslotion-av says:

      I’ve also never seen it.

    • djburnoutb-av says:

I will add my voice to the chorus of “it’s worth it.” Easily one of Murphy’s best, top three for sure.

  • Spoooon-av says:

I can’t wait for all the Release the Snyder Cut people to go “What the fuck is this garbage?”

    • xaa922-av says:

By releasing it as a 4-hour extravaganza replete with “chapters,” he is certainly daring them to do so.

    • nothem-av says:

Nope.  They decided it was great the day it became official.

    • laserface1242-av says:

Also it probably wasn’t a good idea to have it premiere the day before Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres on Disney+.

    • genejenkinson-av says:

You’ll be waiting a long time. The Snyder Cut fans championed this into existence; they want the garbage. They’ll loudly proclaim it a triumph of the form and lobby for him to retake control of the DCEU.What’s the alternative? Admitting the thing you poured your identity and time into sucks and it was all a waste?

I eagerly await the day that Justice League stops being a thing.

    • fcz2-av says:

I await the day it goes back to being an animated DC thing and not associated with Snyder.

    • fronzel-neekburm-av says:

That would involve the AV Club not breathlessly posting on every time someone says any combination of the word “Justice” and “League” in the context of this movie.

      • thrillhobort-av says:

Eh, I enjoy the caustic reporting and equally caustic comment sections. It’s fun to read.

  • slbronkowitzpresents-av says:

Well, if you don’t know, now you know…friendo

  • puddingangerslotion-av says:

That ape does have a big ass.

  • nogelego-av says:

If someone had told me back in 1998 that Mr. Show’s Bob Odenkirk would be an action star in 2021, I would have been too high to remember it today.

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

Excited for Raya and the Last Dragon. Excited for Godzilla vs. Kong. Excited for Snyder’s Justice League cut to be a thing of distant memory. Let’s just move on, God. Even on the one of out a million chance it rules, let’s leave it in the past.

  • browza-av says:

“A Disney dragon”? Really? That’s the role we’re most associating Eddie Murphy with?

    Oh, that’s not…never mind.

  • localmanruinseverything-av says:

The Truffle Hunters is charming, but it runs into a problem I have with some documentaries in that the cinematography is TOO beautiful.  Like, the movie looks great, but the authenticity of a documentary starts to leak out the more artfully staged all of its shots are.

  • dr-darke-av says:

Yes, but where’s Wayne the Cat?

  • teageegeepea-av says:

“Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist” really is better than “Exorcist: The Beginning”, even if the budget for post-production was lacking (which shouldn’t be the case for Snyder’s cut). Snyder is no Schrader though.

Reading about Boss Level just makes me want to re-watch Edge of Tomorrow, which I think is a masterpiece.

A word of warning to anyone interested, you have the the *the* in front of thetrufflehuntersmovie.com or you’ll get one of those virus-warning spam sites that will squeal from your speakers, plus the site does not seem to load with an https.(Honestly, it was a lot of work to not get a VOD price, a list of theaters nowhere near me or better yet, a date the film might stream exclusively on Sony’s Crackle.)http://www.thetrufflehuntersmovie.com/

NEVER MIND THAT ZACK SNYDER SHIT — HERE COMES GODZILLA! ALSO, GIZMODO MISSED THIS VERSION OF GODZILLA IN THEIR GODZILLA SLIDESHOW!I AM TYPING IN ALL CAPS AS BEFITS GODZILLA WHO IS LARGE!
