“Let’s welcome the cast of ‘Security Guards Of The Milky Way!’” a host shouted at the beginning of Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Chukwudi Iwuji’s panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday. But while the cast of what we’re allowed to say is Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 couldn’t explicitly reference the film they all appeared in earlier this spring, the actors strike couldn’t stop them from gushing about each other, as well as director James Gunn.

“My career can be split into two places: everything before I met James Gunn and everything after,” said Iwuji, who joined the cast as main villain The High Evolutionary for the most recent film. “There’s no one avenue to Marvel,” he continued. “We met on the set of Peacemaker and James came up to me and was like, ‘I don’t know what your schedule is, but I’d like you to play the Evolutionary.”

“The fun you’re seeing on that screen is really what the set is like, with the crew and the grips and everyone. I felt very welcomed by them and there was no ego, because everyone felt like they wanted to do something great. That was so helpful,” he continued.

“James is really good at hiring people who are really good people, like no big egos or anything like that,” Sean Gunn added of his director brother. “You know when someone gets welcomed into the fold that they belong, and hopefully we’re really welcoming in that way.” (“You are,” Iwuji confirmed.)

The cast also sent some love in the direction of the other Gunn, who lent his limbs to the production in motion capture as the young Rocket Raccoon. “He doesn’t just go there for the camera angles, he gives you so much,” said Iwuji. “He’s an incredible performer, not just a reference.”

The cast also weighed in on what it’s like to play “non-human characters.” (Wink wink.) “The thing about playing a humanoid is it has to be grounded. Everyone has a recognizable human trait that we adhere to,” said Iwuji. “I’ve never prepared in a galactic way.”

“I’m mostly dealing with the personal and stuff like that, so I can bring some kind of authenticity to the character,” Gillan agreed. “But I do get to have some fun with the exterior.” What a great way to rephrase the word ‘Blue.’

I ask this out of genuine interest. How does this fit in the frame of the SAG/AFTRA strike? I’d assume they weren’t granted a waiver (they’d have blasted the name front and center at the least) but this seems pretty ‘promoting the upcoming release’-ish. Was some sort of accomodation reached?

Just actors appearing on a panel at Comicon.

The article mentions that they couldn’t use the title of the film. This is a touchy subject because Cons are something that allow fans to connect with a franchise. They also create or contribute to a ton of jobs in a city, from janitorial and security to hotel & restaurant staff. So it benefits everyone for cons to keep happening, really. Actors get in front of fans. Fans feel a parasocial bond with a franchise. Convention center workers get some OT in their checks. It’s a weird situation but it benefits SAG’s membership to keep happening, basically. The stars who do the panels and the barely-working-actors doing event security at the venue.

That’s the main motivator of the question, honestly. They can’t mention the title of the film, but they CAN talk extensively about how great it was making it and generally do a promotional bit for it. It seems odd for the actual “this is how you do things right now” to be “you can talk about it, reference it, discuss how you relate to it etc. – JUST DON’T SAY THE NAME”

Heard Florida passed a Don’t Say G(u)a(rdians of the Galax)y law. RIP, Jacksonville Comic Con or some such.

it does seem…antagonistically close to the line, if anything.

And if you point out how these rules seem “dumb,” the AV Club drags you for it.

        • heybigsbender-av says:

But, if these quotes are to be believed, Iwuji slipped and mentioned “The Peacemaker” by name.

          • bc222-av says:

Yeah, I noticed that… I don’t understand these rules. Are they not allowed to mention any movie or show at all? Like, anything that’s ever existed? Or just not anything they’re in? Since the writers’ strike is over, can they mention stuff they wrote and acted in, but only talk about the writing? Can this whole thing just be settled please?

I have to imagine that the fact that Guardians 3 came out like five months ago  and is now streaming on Disney+ helps.

“but this seems pretty ‘promoting the upcoming release’-ish”

I could swear that GotG3 was already released. Like, months ago. Like, the digital release, the DVD/blu release AND the Disney+ release were ALL months ago.

Please explain how you think this is ‘promoting the upcoming release’ of anything.

      Please?

Really stupid union rule that solves nothing since they were actually there and everybody knew what they were talking about.

    • zirconblue-av says:

Maybe the fact that’s not an “upcoming” release?  Both the theatrical release and the streaming/blu-ray releases are in the past.  So, they’re not really “promoting” anything.  They’re just talking about their fun experience.  I don’t know.  I really don’t understand the rules, either.

      • boggardlurch-av says:

I could totally understand were that the case, except the “we can’t actually say the name of the project” bit.I mean, did the guy running the panel just make that bit up or something? Is “everything but the name” the standard?

James Gunn is a pretty great guy if you can look past the pedophile thing he has going.

I look forward to, 20 years from now,
thinking about the years 2020 to… god, whenever, and just summing it
up for my grandkids: Well, everyone had to be stuck at home, we yelled
at each other over masks and medicine, a madman was president… then thing seemed to get back to normal for few months, and then everyone found out there was a musical adaption of Beetlejuice because a US Representative got to second base there, then actors and writers
couldn’t make any tv shows or movies or talk about shows or movies that they’d
already made—or studios would refuse to release movies that were already finished… and that pretty much catches us up to when we ended up
in this underground bunker for the last 20 years….
