For everything 2014’s Godzilla had to say about ecocentrism and humankind being dwarfed by nature, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse seems to be increasingly resigned to showing giant monsters kicking the ever-loving shit out of each other.

And you know what? That’s just fine by us. Given the events of the past year, it feels good to watch a giant lizard go toe-to-toe with a giant gorilla in the first trailer for Godzilla Vs. Kong, busting its way onto the big screen—or perhaps a much smaller screen—on March 26th.

Among the trailer’s many admirers is Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, who sent monster-movie fans and vore enthusiasts into a froth when he took to Twitter to imply that maybe—just maybe—the film takes place in the same universe as his own kaiju slugfest, Pacific Rim.

Don’t get too excited, though. He quickly clarified that he’s only speaking as a fan and currently has no plans to return to the franchise. (The lukewarm reception to the Del Toro-produced sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, probably didn’t help.)

Still, Godzilla Vs. Kong Vs. The Giant Robots And Probably Some Other Monsters From Pacific Rim doesn’t feel totally out of the realm of possibility. Both series have the same studios behind them, and Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight told Collider back in 2017 that there had been some informal discussion about a potential crossover in the future.

Until that day—if it ever actually arrives—we can all dream. And hey, would you look at that, Twitter user @MikeLynch001 already created a nifty little teaser that mashes up lizard, ape, and Jaeger. Check it out below.

Pfft that sounds stupid. Everyone knows the real crossover should be with the Transformers.

  • laserface1242-av says:

Wouldn’t be the weirdest crossover Godzilla’s ever done. That’d his 24-issue Marvel comic where he crossed over with the Marvel Universe which I’ve mentioned a couple times…Hell, there was an entire issue where Godzilla was shrunk down with Pym Particles to size of a rat and fought his way through the sewers of New York. And the best part is this is all still canon to the Marvel Universe. Though Marvel couldn’t call him Godzilla anymore and slightly changed his design. He was eventually renamed to Leviathan and was killed by Archangel.

    • umbrielx-av says:

Godzilla in that sewer fight strongly resembles a fire-breathing pickle…

    • murrychang-av says:

I like how the robot that can phase through things is saying only the two heroes whose powers are mostly ‘gets really small’ can beat Godzilla.

      • laserface1242-av says:

Especially considering that Thor is evenly matched with Jormungand, The Midgard Serpent, who’s at least Godzilla’s size.In fact, Thor was actually able to hurt Godzilla in the comic. Also Hercules suplexed Godzilla

        • murrychang-av says:

          lol right?
“We have a god that has literally fought a giant serpent in the past but you, tiny people, go fight that thing. The rest of us are gonna…I dunno go out for shawarma or something.”

      • dr-boots-list-av says:

It’s the rock-paper-scissors effect. Really tiny things can beat really big things, but are then vulnerable to flyswatters and rolled up newspapers.

    • burnthepriest-av says:

      Great story

    • arcanumv-av says:

After all those battles, it’s no wonder he turned into a drunk.

    • actionactioncut-av says:

Really appreciate how we can always count on you to either provide some relevant panels or “This you?” some weirdo in the comments.

    • dr-boots-list-av says:

But even those conflicts pale next to Godzilla’s true greatest ever comic book showdown.(Dark Horse, not Marvel, but I’m pretty sure it’s universally canon)

  • kathrynzilla-av says:

It’s not like the Pac Rim Universe doesn’t have portals to other dimensions already….It’s also a really good way to make mechagodzilla.

    • aboynamedart-av says:

I’d be up for seeing a certain Guardian of the Earth popping through to chase down those renegade kaiju

    • drpumernickelesq-av says:

That’s… actually a pretty brilliant idea to introduce Mechagodzilla into this universe. Like, maybe an advanced AI-controlled Jaeger that – gasp! – goes rogue.

      • kathrynzilla-av says:

I’d fanboygasm if they intro’d Jaegers.
Like Godzilla is down and out and Mecha is all gloating over his husk until (Cue Pac Rim Theme) a huge Gypsy Danger fist just clocks him.

    • nilus-av says:

As long as the coolness of the first movie portals away from the shit storm that was the sequel

      • drpumernickelesq-av says:

I loved the first Pacific Rim so much. I never bothered to watch the sequel once I started reading some of the bullshit they pulled. Eventually I just read a full spoiler filled recap and… yikes. I’m glad I skipped that one.

        • wjkumfer-av says:

I actually like some of its decisions (like the hybrid Jaegers are pretty cool!), but it’s got more cons than pros. A big appeal of the first film was the “industrial tractor” feel of the Jaegers, and that was totally lost in the sequel. Plus most of the fighting is between Jaegers.

          • drpumernickelesq-av says:

Once I read who the villain was in the sequel… yeah. I wanted absolutely NO part of it. It’s such a weird and dumb decision, it made me not care about any other aspect of the movie.

    • doctorwhotb-av says:

Fan theories are that Mecha is in the latest film. The trailer shows what looks like blueprints on a monitor, and there’s belief that the red eyed creature you can’t see is it.

      • saltedgailthesnail-av says:

I suppose it would make sense. Humans already on super thin ice with the titans attempting to create yet another titan killing weapon is bound to be the final straw for Godzilla.

“My man Serizawa died for peace and here you all are being dicks again. I’m going to take a shit on Tokyo before I burn it all down!” – Godzilla

    • dinguscon-av says:

Pacific Rim is in the future, they really don’t have to do a lot to get Godzilla in there, just put him to sleep for a while. Maybe wake him up to fight extra-dimensional kaiju.

  • murrychang-av says:

Yeah and I want to see Fingolfin fight Morgoth. We all got dreams, bud.

  • nilus-av says:

Screw this, I want to see 2021’s version of Jet Jaquar

  • arcanumv-av says:

Other than MechaGhidorah, this is the thing I would like to see most in that franchise.

  • gargsy-av says:

Should’ve made a better movie then, Guill.

  • xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-av says:

Oh man, I loved “Pacific Rim” so much. So much that it’s on the my list of “Most Random Movies That Made Me Cry”. I may have been going through some stuff…

    • actionactioncut-av says:

Pacific Rim and Creed are both on my list of “Movies That Made Me Unexpectedly Cry Hot ‘I Love My Family’ Tears”.

    • dr-boots-list-av says:

I have this thing where nearly any movie with robots in it will make me cry at least a little. Wall-E and Iron Giant, of course, but also Terminator, Evangelion, Blade Runner, FLCL, Ex Machina, AI.
Even Chappie, although those were more tears of a “please make it stop” variety.

  • presidentzod-av says:

    No thanks.

  • tombirkenstock-av says:

So, I actually really liked Pacific Rim 2. It doesn’t have Del Toro’s artistry or interest in the details, and the special effects looked like shit, but the way it just threw a bunch of new ideas into the mix gave it a joyous comic book feel that you don’t even get from comic book movies these days.

    • squillaboxer-av says:

I don’t think I can call it objectively “good”, but it was a shitload more entertaining than the last Godzilla.

  • actionactioncut-av says:

I showed my nephew Pacific Rim when he was about 6; my sister went from being concerned that he was too young for the more intense elements to being annoyed after he wouldn’t stop humming the main theme weeks later (as he should have; it rules). While the sequel was comparatively disappointing, I’m always down to see Jaegers fight anything.*I covered his eyes at certain points, which is more than I can say for my Uncle Nigel, who let me watch Tales from the Darkside: The Movie when I was that age and then couldn’t understand why I was afraid of his pet cat.

If Colossal Kaiju Combat hadn’t gone belly up it could have happened quick.

  • perlafas-av says:

Godzilla vs King Kong vs Jaegers ? That would be in danger of making much too sense. We need an EVA in there.
