Time (and probably a tidy sum) must heal all wounds. Hannah Gadsby, a one-time Netflix darling for their breakout special Nanette and a one-time Netflix critic, has brokered a multi-title deal with the streamer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The news comes nearly a year after Gadsby’s scathing note to Netflix boss Ted Sarandos over his support of Dave Chappelle’s transphobic comedy.

The deal includes Gasby’s next standup show, Body Of Work, as well as a showcase for multiple international comics. “In an effort to further open a door that I had to fight to get through myself, I will curate and host a lineup show on Netflix featuring six new, gender-diverse comedians,” Gadsby said in a statement (per THR). “In a notoriously transphobic industry, I am looking to broaden the scope of opportunities for genderqueer performers from around the globe, as well as expand the diversity of offerings to audiences on one of comedy’s biggest platforms. Coupled with a mentorship initiative for these up-and-coming comics, the program aims to foster the professional development of a demographic that is still struggling to have their voices heard. Recorded in a single run in the U.K. in 2023, this will be a chance for the world to hear these voices for the first, but definitely not the last, time.”

In their open letter to Sarandos, Gadsby previously wrote, “You didn’t pay me nearly enough to deal with the real world consequences of the hate speech dog whistling you refuse to acknowledge, Ted,” referencing the apparent uptick in trolling from Chappelle’s fans following his special. “Fuck you and your amoral algorithm cult… I do shits with more back bone than you. That’s just a joke! I definitely didn’t cross a line because you just told the world there isn’t one.”

Hard to imagine making peace after that gauntlet got thrown, but Gadsby posted on Instagram that the showcase of “genderqueer voices… made my decision to do a third special with them a little easier.” However, they added that the specials will premiere on Netflix “at some point… in the future, I suppose. It’s hard to say exactly because time is a flower and algorithms are boring.” But at least they pay the bills.

If you go by social media there are only two types of stand-up specials now. The ones where you tell an unfunny story about a personal tragedy or ones where you attack trans women and bitch about cancel culture.

    • theodorefrost---absolutelyhateskinja-av says:

Those are seemingly the most visible ones. But you can find funny specials from Sam Morril, Raanan Herschberg, Joe List, Andrew Santino, Chris DeStefano, Jade Catta-Pretta, Mark Normand, and Jo Koy (among others)… mostly on YouTube and some on Netflix.

Ah, the comedic medium of sarcasm……..I hope.

Im replying late, but thanks. it’s amazing how people think Chapelle is the end all be all of comedy. That it has to be burn bridges scumbag style or a drawn out TED Talk. Everyone I listed is pretty good and not preachy, but the 2 other jagoffs that commented don’t want to look at new stand-ups. In the words of Mark Normand, “Comedy!”

      • ajvia12-av says:

there was one word I disagreed with in that sentence“funny”otherwise yes those are all specials on netflix

Sorry I didn’t include Nanette on there, or maybe you like Bill Engvall? I bet Larry the Cable Guy is more your style

Do you know anything about comedy? None of them are woke. Ari Shaffir’s new one was really good too. Thanks for showing your ignorance! Adios dingleberry

Of course not. You’re the self declared comedy expert. Why are you all such dumbass shitstains that think your opinion is worth a fuck?

No one was originally replying to you, you jumped on here whining. You said you have no idea who any of those people are, you came here asking questions lol you walked in here admitting you don’t know what you’re talking about. Seems not much has changed. Take some blood pressure medication or maybe take a nap

    • pdoa-av says:

She said “the showcase of genderqueer voices… made my decision to do a third special with them a little easier” meaning it furthers her cause to do the special. Do you think she should do it for free? You want to talk about hypocrisy, how about Chapelle punching down on marginalized people?

    • theunnumberedone-av says:

I’ll paste a quote from the article you were clearly too indignant to read: “In an effort to further open a door that I had to fight to get through myself, I will curate and host a lineup show on Netflix featuring six new, gender-diverse comedians,” Gadsby said in a statement (per THR). “In a notoriously transphobic industry, I am looking to broaden the scope of opportunities for genderqueer performers from around the globe, as well as expand the diversity of offerings to audiences on one of comedy’s biggest platforms. Shorter version: “I like money, give me money, I’m for sale, just like everyone else”. All the flowery language in the world won’t change that once you boil away the bs.

        • theunnumberedone-av says:

All you’re doing is marveling at your own ability to contort language to fit your existing conclusion.

          • kman3k-av says:

“Marveling at your own ability…” Oh, I marvel, no worries on that point. And all you’re doing is giving a “free pass” to another typical hypocrite because they fit the “head cannon” that you’ve created. Congrats. That PR BS that was spewed above, it boils down to one thing and one thing only – Money, money, monnnneeeeyyyy…..MONNNNEEEYYYY

          • theunnumberedone-av says:

When making art means making money, bad faith internet goblins can apply accusations of hypocrisy wherever needed. God forbid she want the widest audience possible for underrecognized comics.

          • kman3k-av says:

Ah yes, the tried and true tactic by all who don’t like what they hear – Insult the person on the other side, classic. You’re doing great btw.Let’s not let any facts get in the way, or acknowledge that even the articles writer is saying the same thing, in the opening sentence.

          • theunnumberedone-av says:

“Let’s not let facts get in the way” is such a pointless thing to bring into this argument. Stop arguing off a template.

          • kman3k-av says:

Oh, I’m the one arguing from a template? How cute.Pot, meet Kettle.

          • weirdstalkersareweird-av says:

Why the fuck is “hypocrisy exists” such a staggering revelation to you?

          • kman3k-av says:

I’m sorry, was this post meant for TheUnnumberedOne??I am fully and keenly aware that “hypocrisy exists”, hence my post pointing and laughing at it.

    • frasier-crane-av says:

I’m personally not a fan of her work, but it sure looks like she *won* in the arenas of money, career advancement, the showcase, the issues, the clout of curating other comics, AND the attitude – so it’s a great example for everyone, and isn’t hypocritical in any way, shape or form.

      • theodorefrost---absolutelyhateskinja-av says:

Yeah, I had very little interest in her special, but I also had very little interest in Chappelle’s most recent one. There’s plenty of other comedians out there, some on Netflix and a decent amount on YouTube that are pretty funny and don’t completely punch down.

      • rockhard69-av says:

Yeah, turns out she was just jealous of Dave’s Netflix deal and now her tireless fight for a paycheck from Netflix has finally come to end. Nothing hyprocritical at all.

    • captain-splendid-av says:

Oh cool, thanks for giving me an excuse to post this again

    • turbotastic-av says:

She took Netflix to task for not having diverse LGBT voices, and now they’ve given her a series of specials where she’s going to showcase other young queer comedians. Unlike Chapelle, she’s not just in it for herself, she’s going to launch other comedians’ careers. Netflix caved. She won.

An Open Letter to People Who Love to Write Open Letters:“Knock it off.”

  • chris-finch-av says:

Y’know, the headline and overall tone of the article almost had me thinking “what a hypocrite!” But the juxtaposition of her statement against Netflix with her statement showing Netflix has acquiesced to getting a wider range of voices on their platform seems like a win.I know morals are important, and in an ideal world she’d boycott Netflix, and so would everyone with a problem with the transphobic comedy they’re investing absurd cash in, but it’s late capitalism, baby; get that bag. Plus, if Chapelle gets to grab bundles pretending to be a victim of the woke trans agenda, why can’t Gatsby pull a similar sort of kayfabe by getting paid by the same company under protest? All in all, seems a little hypocritical to look down on someone for grabbing money from a less-than-moral company while working for a company which squashed your union, shitcanned your coworkers, and forced you to move to la to mine primary sources for clickbait.

    • chestrockwell24-av says:

      In other words: it’s (D)ifferent

    • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

I don’t blame her for wanting to get paid, but all rationalizations aside—she sold out. It doesn’t make her a terrible person or anything, but she’s definitely ceded some of the moral high ground here. It’s not like there aren’t other platforms upon which to do stand up comedy sets.

      • chris-finch-av says:

Eh, I think maybe the thing to realize is she’s already sold out (anyone pursuing a career in entertainment is selling out, especially in this media landscape), and that one doesn’t need “moral high ground” in order to pressure their boss (remember Gadsby already has a relationship with this platform) to do a little better and platform some queer voices if they’re going to platform the bigoted one. Celebrities aren’t our friends, they aren’t moral paragons, and if they’re trying to get something positive to happen the whole house of cards is always gonna fall down if we’re to expect that goodness to permeate all their actions or nullify their quest to be rich and famous.

        • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

I definitely think Gadsby is compromising her principles here. Even if Netflix is giving a platform to genderqueer voices, they’re still giving a platform to transphobia…and not making any effort to rectify the situation beyond giving a voice to the other side. Not good enough. But taking the deal is her prerogative; I just personally lost a little respect for her over it. Making that big of a fuss over Chappelle and then taking a paycheck from Netflix is a little too hypocritical for me. But it’s not like I’ll never watch her perform again or agitate to burn her at the stake over it. People make decisions I disagree with. Not a huge deal.

      • rockhard69-av says:

Yeah, the thing with having principles is that standing up for them requires making uncomfortable choices. If you know you’re going to take the easy road anyway might as well avoid pretending to have any principles in the first place.

    • douze-av says:

This was my key takeaway from the article:“ Fuck you and your amoral algorithm cult… I do shits with more back bone than you. That’s just a joke! I definitely didn’t cross a line because you just told the world there isn’t one.”This might be a jumping-off point for discussing toxic fandom.

    • mikepencenonethericher-av says:

Its great that they will use her Netflix deal for the causes they supports but I agree with you. They could have gone with a different streaming company? Anyway go Hannah get that cash.

Clapter comedy specials for all political parties! – Netflix

  • qwedswa-av says:

She criticized Netflix and Netflix gave her a platform to lift up genderqueer voices. She said that’s what made the decision easier. But you’re going to bracket her stated reasons with the first sentence and the last sentence saying she’s just doing it for the money. Did Dave Chappelle write this article?

    • chestrockwell24-av says:

They already gave genderqueers a voice by giving this unfunny woman 2 netflix specials.

    • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

Netflix already had a history with Gadsby in which she released two popular specials that presumably made Netflix money. What do you really think Netflix’s motivation is here? To give genderqueer voices a platform or to make more money off a proven commodity? Come on. Considering Netflix airs Chappelle and Gadsby on the same platform without an ounce of hesitation, I highly doubt Netflix execs give a shit about politics. They care about money. Full stop. And that’s what this is all about.

      • douze-av says:

It’s all about the genderqueer Benjamins.

      • qwedswa-av says:

I think you misunderstand. The article seems to be characterizing Gadsby’s motivation as purely financial, despite her saying otherwise.
Netflix is all about the money. If it would save them two cents to cancel their most popular show, they would.

        • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

There was an article? But yeah, I definitely don’t agree Gadsby’s motives were purely financial. I don’t think she would have bit the hands that feed her otherwise.

        • rockhard69-av says:

Yeah, no way Gadsby took a paycheck for financial reasons.

      • rockhard69-av says:

Netflix shareholders have fiduciary responsibility to genderqueers. They could get in big trouble with the SEC if they don’t let unfunny trannies on.

    • rockhard69-av says:

Yup. Netflix has done a great job uplifting one genderqueer’s bank account and ensured the bitch can no longer criticize them. Brilliant business move. Let’s face it, no one is paying to listen to her “jokes”

I’m not planning to stop anyone from watching.

        • rockhard69-av says:

Not good enough. I personally dont like it and so it must be pulled off Netflix immediately so no one can watch it, and all venues must cancel Gadsby shows. Everyone involved in its production must be rounded up and shot and their families burned to erase all traces of their lineage.
