HBO Max’s animated Gremlins prequel, titled Gremlins: The Secrets Of The Mogwai, hasn’t even premiered yet but it’s already scored an early season two renewal. The upcoming family series—based on Chris Columbus’ successful 1984 horror comedy—hails from Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Television, with Tze Chun as writer and co-executive producer.

Set in 1920s Shanghai, the 10-episode show will reveal how young Sam Wing a.k.a Mr. Wing from the original movie meets a young Mogwai named Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering and battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. They are being pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins as they attempt to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a treasure.

HBO Max has stacked up quite the cast for Gremlins: The Secrets Of The Mogwai. Izaac Wang voices Sam Wing and A.J. Loscascio voices Gizmo. Meanwhile, Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, and James Hong are some of the newly announced cast members. Matthew Rhys has been tapped to voice the show’s power-hungry villain, Riley Greene.

Gremlins: The Secrets Of The Mogwai is set to bow out at some point in 2021.

$100 says James Hong outlives all of us.

Who wants this? Leave us alone!

More Ming-Na in all the things forever, please.

But who will voice Dr. Morgturmen?

  • brontosaurian-av says:

I’d probably also give Joe Dante credit for directing the movie personally. Columbus wrote it, but it is very much a Joe Dante movie.

    • doctorwhotb-av says:

Yeah, Dante’s humor is clear throughout. I love the fact that when they convinced him to do a sequel years later, that his main idea was to satirize the original.

    • mwfuller-av says:

And while you’re at it, why not give him credit for “Eerie, Indiana”?

    • surprise-surprise-av says:

And Spielberg. He was the one who was like, “That Gizmo is really cute. Maybe we should rewrite it so he doesn’t become a hideous monster.”

    • redplasticmac-av says:

It is 1,000% a Joe Dante movie. If you’re going to credit anyone besides Dante, its more a Spielberg film than a Chris Columbus film.

      • south-of-heaven-av says:

Gremlins is a genuine collaboration between Dante, Spielberg and Columbus. Gremlins 2, otoh, is 100,000% pure, uncut Joe Dante.

        • redplasticmac-av says:

Yes but if you had to pick one person to “credit” in an article like this I think it’d be Dante first, Spielberg second, and Columbus third. Just an odd choice is all. Columbus wrote the script, it isn’t flat out “wrong.” Just a weird choice.

    The Frogurt is also cursed.

Matthew Rhys has been tapped to voice the show’s power-hungry villain, Riley GreeneWho is secretly a Leninist agent who wants to bring the magic of the Mogwai to the Workers’ Paradise!

I like news about HBO Max because there’s inevitably a comment about wanting new Venture Bros. eps, such as this one.

I really need to stop getting my hopes up in case it all comes to nothing and I’m crushed all over again. But…. every time I see the words “HBO Max” I have a spark of hope. I just want to see Rusty and the Monarch interacting in light of a certain bombshell at the end of the last season!!!

  • rkpatrick-av says:

Hopefully they explain why Mr Wing sold Gizmo to begin with.

    • surprise-surprise-av says:

He doesn’t. The dad tries to buy Gizmo (for an amount that – even taking inflation into account was laughable – something like $300 for a rare, mystical creature).  Mr. Wing tells him Gizmo isn’t for sale and his grandson goes behind his back and sells Gizmo to the dad.
There are questions though. For example: If, according to this prequel, Gizmo is a sentient creature who has been Mr. Wing’s friend for 60-something years, why did Mr. Wing keep him locked in a little cage next to a bunch of tarantulas (which is a thing you would find in a Chinese antiques store)? Also, where was the grandson when Mr. Wing died?

      • rkpatrick-av says:

Oh, crap, that’s right. I had forgotten about the grandson doing the sale.  I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve seen that movie, and it’s a great x-mas movie (at least in my family)

  • docprof-av says:

I love both Gremlins movies and have multiple Gizmo items in my life, but this sounds horrendous.

  • notanothermurrayslaughter-av says:

… and Nick Lutsko as Desmond?

  • anotherburnersorry-av says:

thank god someone’s finally going to really flesh out the mythology of the Gremlins; much better than making something new and different

  • marcus75-av says:

Assuming BD Wong plays a psychiatrist, although I’m not sure how such a character would fit into the show.
