Good news for Dubeks, and fans of Dubeks, today, as HBO Max has confirmed that it’s ordered a third season of its deeply funny, viciously cutting showbiz satire The Other Two. No waiting around for two and a half years (and a switch from a network to a streaming service) this time, either, as news of the renewal comes just a single day after the series aired its second season finale, in which Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Heléne Yorke) are forced to make a tough decision between their irritating family, or their irritating careers.

And, really: We couldn’t be happier. The Other Two is, after all, one of the funniest comedies running at the moment, an endless parade of some of the sharpest jokes imaginable, delivered at rapid pace by a fantastic cast that also includes Case Walker, Wanda Sykes, Ken Marino, and the essentially perfect Molly Shannon, a woman who can make falling asleep with her eyes open simultaneously one of the funniest, and saddest, things you’ll see on TV all year.

Season two of the series put extra focus on Shannon (because why wouldn’t you?), as her character Pat rises to talk show success, becoming the new family member in whose shadow Brooke and Cary must toil in their pursuit of…well, anything, really. It was also a clear demonstration that series creators Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider and their writers continue to have an amazing grasp on these characters, managing to blow their more absurd edges out to their limits without actually transforming them into caricatures. (Also, there’s nobody better at coming up with fake dumb TV shows that nearly seem like they should exist on network TV—shout out to all the Tickers and Tackers duking it out on Tik Tak Toe.)

No word yet on when season 3 of the series will arrive, but: Soon, please?

Good. The second season is even better than the first and Yorke in particular is doing Emmy worthy work.

I blew through the first two seasons in less than a week, just in time to watch the last two episodes yesterday when they premiered on HBO Max. Incredibly funny show, with an absurdist take on show business that’s kind of similar in tone to Girls5eva, except it’s even crueler. Very glad this got renewed, and I hope they bump up secret weapon Josh Segarra to regular status.

Hell yeah. The first season was pretty good, but the 2nd was amazing. The absurdist nature of season 2 really reminded me of how the short-lived, but very funny show, Corporate portrayed the business world.

oh yes! everytime Lance appears I get the biggest smile on my face

everytime Lance appears I get the biggest smile on my faceI see someone else mentioned Segarra’s role in the Denis Leary show The Moodys – he was the best thing about that rather mixed bag – but he first came to my attention in another Leary project called Sirens (shortly after Rescue Me ended, a workplace comedy set in a fire station). There are only two seasons of Sirens, and it deserved more. It may be on Hulu, but it’s worth tracking down, wherever it is.I don’t know what else he can do, but Segarra has perfected the lovable dope.

I love how similar he and Brooke are, and every time he shows up it’s a treat.  I hope they don’t change him too much.

You should check Difficult People, created by Julie Klausner and also starring Billy Eichner, on Hulu. They only had three seasons, but they had a blast with mocking HBO, Woody Allen, Kevin Spacey, Grace and Frankie, Aaron Sorkin and the Duplass brothers.

It took me a bit to realize that Josh Segarra played a season’s long antagonist on Arrow. Straight-laced psycopath type. He’s so wonderfully charming as Lance—and fine as all hell, jeez—that my brain refused to believe it for a bit.

I’ve had Josh on my radar (ok, meaning I’ve had a crush on him) since seeing him off-Broadway in Dogfight (and realizing I had seen him previously in the so/so musical Lysistrata Jones and even on the Electric Company reboot) so it’s great to see how much work he’s getting (even in weird projects like that Dolly Parton Christmas musical.)

It’s worth pointing out though that he plays this *exact* same character on The Moodys (or played, as after this Summer’s brief run I can’t see Fox ever renewing it) which premiered I think a bit after The Other Two. Of course the show isn’t even slightly as good as The Other Two, despite a mostly likeable cast, but… (I know it was based on an Australian show so I’m not sure if Josh’s character is similar there)  This interview had the only brief clips I could find of him on the show:

So glad I watched this based off of AvClub discussions. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed harder at any other pilot episode of a show. A hidden gem.

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

I mean, that’s great news. It had one of the Top 5 best second seasons of a TV show ever.

  • grant8418-av says:

I doubt it will happen, but I’d love in S3 to see some cameos from Drew Tarver’s improv crew “Big Grande”, as well as Carl Tart.

In more gay news, Laura Dern fell. . .

Now everyone support Cary and buy a ticket to Night Nurse.

    Oh Debra.I LOVE this show!!

  • jaywantsacatwantshiskinjaacctback-av says:

I loved season one and glad we get one more season! This show is funny and smart and I really hope more people come around to it. Also, Ive only watched episode 1 of season 2. How did Black Lively hurt you, writers? lul

  • masshysteria-av says:

I mean, it doesn’t get any better than Molly Shannon’s delivery of the line, “Jesus Christ,” in the last episode.
