The Hollywood Foreign Press Association—which continues to reassure anyone in earshot that it’s for sure fixed all those things that everyone has been mad at them about over the last two years—released its list of nominations for this year’s Golden Globes this morning. The Association (which claims to have both expanded its roster of voters to include more diverse voices, and vowed to cut back on corruption and salaried positions for its members) is clearly looking to reassert itself as the natural, not-at-all-weirdly-insular-or-racist precursor to the Oscars, reclaiming its position as the big kick-off to the annual awards season festivities.

And while the biggest question surrounding this year’s ceremony is still likely to be less “Who’s going to win?” than “Who’s actually going to show up?” (Brendan Fraser, for one, has stated that there’s no chance he’ll be attending, no matter how well The Whale did today), the nominations still function as a decent bellwether for getting at least a loose idea of where the critical consensus for this year’s biggest races may be.

With that in mind, Elvis, TÁR, The Banshees Of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Fablemans begin to pull ahead of the pack with strong showings in multiple categories. Films the public hasn’t yet gotten to enjoy, including Babylon and Avatar: The Way Of Water also got a few nominations each, including a Best Director nod for the ever-confident James Cameron. Ana de Armas managed to pull a leading actress nomination for the controversial Blonde, though the film received no other attention. And the Globes’ multiple film categories continue to make room for some other fun surprises, like Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes’ nods for The Menu.

The television categories offer a retrospective on the most recent Emmys as well as a forecast of next year’s, with nods for House Of The Dragon (and its star Emma D’Arcy), The Bear, and The White Lotus: Sicily. Perhaps the most surprising nomination under the television umbrella is for Wednesday, Netflix’s most recent teen offering that has received mixed reviews but is nonetheless reportedly doing gangbusters for the streamer.

As for the Globes themselves, they’ll be held on Tuesday, January 10, on NBC and Peacock. Jerrod Carmichael is hosting.
