For HBO Max subscribers, February might offer more than pricey chocolates and teddy bears. (We wouldn’t turn those down, though. It’s been a shitty year.) Next month will spark the 2021 wave of Warner Bros. film premieres, starting with Judas And The Black Messiah. Starring LaKeith Stanfield, Daniel Kaluuya, and Jesse Plemmons, the historical drama follows Bill O’ Neal, who infiltrates the Black Panthers on behalf of the FBI. Kaluuya transforms as revolutionary Fred Hampton in a role that is generating early buzz and controversy in equal measure. As for a premiere on the entirely opposite end of the Serious Spectrum, Tom & Jerry also drops next month, starring Chloë Grace Moretz. Both will remain on the streamer for 31 days after their respective debuts and will also show in theaters, if you’re still going to those. (For the time being, we are not.)
Some HBO/HBO Max originals are also heading to platform, including new seasons of the animated series Close Enough and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver. Limited series Beartown “explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, the courage it takes for an individual to go against the group and the consequences of how we raise our children,” per HBO’s official synopsis. And if you looking for a breezy documentary, There’s No I In Threesome follows a New Zealand couple that decides to explore polyamory.
While you’re here: It’s a good month to check out HBO Max’s exclusive Studio Ghibli library, which will include a new film, Earwig And The Witch. And if you’re looking for some old favorites, Selena, Aquaman, and The Graduate are all a part of the deluge of titles making their way to the streamer. Perhaps the most interesting of the bunch is the addition of Michaela Coel’s Chewing Gum, which was originally an exclusive Netflix acquisition. So if you’re missing Tracey, Cynthia, and the rest of the estate these days, you can reunite with them starting February 1. Just make sure to take a moment to say bye to Us, Dick Tracy, and all Willy Wonka-related gems first.

Wow, I can’t believe we are getting another season of Close Enough. I thought the 3 year or so delay where it was in limbo before Max picked it up meant it would be one and done.Also, HBO Max is apparently not very good at letting me know when new episodes go up because they released more Looney Tunes Cartoons episodes some time after I watched the Xmas special and I just noticed it at random the other day. I wish these were getting more attention because they are the best that Looney Tunes have been in more than half a century. Whodathunk that the way to make the characters work was to do the same things that made them work to begin with (minus the occasional racism or early 20th century cultural reference)?
Those new Looney Tune shorts are quite good. I think they need to have a little more variety though – I’m getting a tad tired of nothing but Bugs/Elmer, Porky/Daffy, Sylvester/Tweety.
I imagine that lines up with their “back to basics” approach with the plotting and character designs. The order from HBO Max was supposedly for a thousand minutes of animation (so like 80 episodes or so based on the current lengths), so I am hoping we will see more variety as they go on (although bringing back the Daffy/Porky pairing in particular has really worked for me). I personally want at least a few Marvin the Martian features outside of the interstitials.
Batman: Brave and the Bold is the best Batman!
I’m so excited to see both that and JL/JLU on the list. When they added Batman: TAS, I was hoping all of these would be close behind.Still no Superman: TAS, so hopefully that will be added at some point.

When is Close Enough airing? I’m not seeing it anywhere in the list, and haven’t seen a season release announcement anywhere else
I didn’t realize Earwig and the Witch was covered under the same day release when I saw it was coming to theaters. That’s excellent news, as I still don’t feel safe going and I wanted to see it.
I’m sure Tom & Jerry was being targeted at the grade school set, so, y’know, ‘who gives a shit, they’re eight year olds!’, but jesus does it look BAD and LAZY. I mean… Roger Rabbit looked better and that was 20+ years ago!
