Few shows have survived as many network changes as Reno 911!, but few shows have shorts as short as Lieutenant Dangle

Reno 911! is back. Again.

After more than a decade off cable, relegated to the shifting interests, names, and runtimes of Quibi, Paramount+, and The Roku Channel, Lieutenant Dangle is bringing those getaway sticks back to Comedy Central. Per a network press release, the series returns on Wednesday, October 19, at 10:30 p.m.

Now, don’t get too excited. Despite the press release claiming Comedy Central was premiering “all-new episodes,” judging by the trailer, it looks like we’re getting a repackaged version of the Roku Channel’s most recent season. Reno 911! Defunded was the second season of the show’s 2020 revival. Before that, Quibi ran Reno 911! through its 10-minute video format before the crew put together a feature-length film for Paramount+, Reno 911!: The Hunt For QAnon, which speaks to the concept’s elasticity. After that, a second season of the Quibi revival was ordered, with production outliving the app that greenlit it.

Reno 911

Earlier this year, The Roku Channel, which purchased all those Quibis after Jeffrey Katzenberg went out for cigarettes and never returned, aired the eighth season of the series under the Defunded moniker. Comedy Central apparently dropped the Defunded tagline, placing the show much more comfortably on the shelf with the rest of the Comedy Central seasons.

For those who don’t know, perhaps because you came of TV watching age in the 10 years between seasons, Reno 911! is a parody of the controversial reality series Cops. However, instead of offering viewers a look inside the real-life world of harassing people of color, people experiencing homelessness, people struggling with drug addiction, and those living through effects of economic instability and inequality, Reno 911! presented an inept sheriff’s department on the verge of hurting themselves and others. Honestly, it’s basically the same thing as Cops, except you can watch it without wanting to throw up.

New episodes of Reno 911! (well, new to anyone that doesn’t watch The Roku Channel) premiere on October 19 on Comedy Central.

How about more of The State?

    • Matt Schimkowitz says:

We have our fingers perpetually crossed for more The State

    • hamiltonistrash-av says:

at this point I’d even settle for another season of Stella

Hot take, especially for a Xennial: I never loved The State. I thought it was aggressively *fine*. I did laugh at some sketches but generally I preferred other sketch shows. For my money The Vacant Lot was funnier and less annoying. Also, I kinda hate Michael Ian Black. Like I know that’s part of his shtick, but fuck that guy.

As much as I loved and still love The State, Michael Ian Black was always the least likeable. #TeamLennon

You know who my favorite was. But you wouldn’t understand! That’s it, I’m outta here!

Lennon I find fascinating largely because of his successful screenwriting career. Clearly he is comfortable writing broad comedy fluff that is, if I can be an elitist shit, beneath his talents. And I just admire the professionalism. I have a hard time not hating everything I write.

I think my love of the show was a combination of a really great cast and me being in high school when it aired. Can’t help it. I still sing “Lord, Please Kill Tim” on a regular basis.

There are standouts, definitely. I just prefer them in their later work. Burning Love and Reno 911! in particular. Although I also really liked the format of Viva Variety if not the specific bits. Obviously especially Johnny Bluejeans.Man do I hate MIB…

I disagree with your last sentence, but everything else is right on.

        • necgray-av says:

That’s fair. I have a problem with comic talents who use a persona. Like I hate Michael Ian Black because he presents an asshole persona. I really dislike Scott Aukerman because of the Scott “character”. I could never get fully on board with the Stephen Colbert of the Report, even though his was the most obvious of put-on caricatures. Even Bruce Campbell, who I dearly love, couldn’t get me past the hump of I Am Bruce.

I would rather have $240 worth of puddin’.

Their material was never quite good enough. Some likeable performers but some seriously poor writing that doesn’t hold up. Even tho that Thomas Lennon is a heckuva nice guy.

You know what I’m gonna say…

      More Viva Variety!

This is the first time in a while I’ve regretted not having cable.

Speaking of cancelled Quibi stuff… weren’t we supposed to get more of Paula Pell’s excellent Mapleworth Murders show? That series and the new Reno episodes were the clear highlight of that defunct network.

    • sirslud-av says:

I loved that show so much.

    • maulkeating-av says:

BRING BACK…As someone once said “It’s like one of those shows Jack Donaghy thought up when he was trying to tank NBC on 30 Rock.”

    • bloggymcblogblog-av says:

I don’t think it is. It’s been off the air for two years and Paula Pell is now on Girls5Eva.

    • bassplayerconvention-av says:

Is it actually available to watch somewhere? Or is it nestled in the dustbin of history next to Quibi itself?

      • maulkeating-av says:

God, Quibi feels like a fever dream. It’s exactly what you get when you get a bunch of 60-something executives noticing the grandkids are watchin’ all the stuff on their phones, and thinkin’ they’d pay money for it.

      • jmyoung123-av says:

The Roku Channel has the Mapleworth Murders. That’s where I watched it.

      • bloggymcblogblog-av says:

It’s on the Roku channel for the time being. It’s 12 7-9 minute episodes (really four half hour episodes that were sliced up) so it’s a really quick watch.

  • gesundheitall-av says:

Wait, this is literally just the Roku Channel season, but on Comedy Central??

  • SquidEatinDough-av says:

I remember idiotic Very Online twitterers calling this show copaganda, when it’s the complete opposite.

    • luasdublin-av says:

I havent seen a lot of the older stuff, but it seems more like , What if Brooklyn 99* , but they’re really really inept/high.
(*I mean they even share a cast member)

  • winstonsmith2022-av says:

Dear god, you AV Club writers will use any excuse to shoehorn your self-righteous scolding into anything.
