Hide your exes: Kelly Clarkson and Annie Murphy remixed “A Little Bit Alexis”

Aux Features TV

One of the many, many highlights of Annie Murphy’s performance as Alexis Rose in Schitt’s Creek is the time she auditioned for the local version of Cabaret with her signature song. “A Little Bit Alexis” was apparently the theme song to Alexis’ “critically reviewed limited reality series”; in real life, it was created by Murphy with some help from her husband Menno Versteeg and his band, Hollerado.

On the show, Alexis’ various gyrations so horrify her mother Moira and neighbor Jocelyn, who are conducting the auditions, that they cut the song short, before Alexis really gets to showcase her range. But now, that crime against pop-culture humanity has been remedied—by Kelly Clarkson, of all people. This week, when Clarkson had Murphy on her talk show, Murphy got to perform another, longer version of “A Little Bit Alexis.” Clarkson chimed in with her own verse, claiming that she’s “a whole lot of Texas.” Even at double the length—still too short.

Naturally, Murphy had the perfect reaction tweet to her Kelly Clarkson Show appearance, leading off with “Oh my god, David!”, as all such statements should:

Annie Murphy as Alexis continues to be amazingI love Moira & Jocelyn’s horror at the audition in the Schitt’s Creek episode. And also that Alexis later express relief to Stevie that she was glad that she didn’t get the part when she found out all those lines she would have had to memorize

Moira’s nudging of Jocelyn with her foot makes me laugh every time I see it.  (At least when I can pull focus from the glory that is A Little Bit Alexis.)

I don’t know how anybody kept a straight face in that scene…especially when Annie starts crooning out of key for the chorus.

I’ve always felt that it was a combination of Moira nudging Jocelyn as well as Catherine O’Hara nudging Jennifer Robertson to prevent her from losing it.

I also think Moira was nudging Jocelyn to be the one to cut off Alexis’s audition because Alexis & Jocelyn actually have a less fraught relationship than Alexis & Moira do, so Alexis would take it better coming from her

The line reads immediately afterwards are absolutely immaculate:“There’s a place for her somewhere.”“On stage!?”“NO!”

I’m not going to lie, A Little Bit Alexis is a banger and was ranked VERY high on my summer Spotify playlist.  Everyone wants a horse.  Vroom vroom, bitches.

It is important that everyone know that Little Bit Alexis is a full length song – not just the bit they show on the episode of SC (or on the Kelly Clarkson show for that matter) – that is available on streaming services and it is 110% an absolute banger.

I’m waiting for the first wrestler to adopt it as an entrance theme.

This show is almost a reverse Office, in where the characters actually get more likable as the series progresses, and you actually get excited when they start pairing up. I wasn’t sure about it going into it, but man, I’m glad I stuck it out.Now I’m wanting a collaboration with Alexis and Cecily Strong’s Gemma.

Yep, I love that. I held off on it for YEARS because I kept hearing “rich family of assholes loses everything” and kept thinking how similar it sounded to Arrested Development (and I love AD but it’s just . . . not what I need to watch these days) and then watched it and realized it was more like “rich family of assholes loses everything, are forced to spend time with one another, find out what love is and turn into wonderful* people.” *i mean, within reason.  Moira’s always gonna Moira.
