Price: $11.69Going into 2022, few other than Todd Field and Cate Blanchett could have predicted that the year’s sexiest film soundtrack would make classical music cool again. The Star Trek UHD is really good. The movie looks gorgeous. It is. I’m mildly cheesed that the only way to get the Special Longer Version is to buy another pricey set with a bunch of bundled physical extras that are cool and all but ultimately irrelevant to me; I would’ve gladly paid a bit more for the recently released six-film set if it included all three versions of TMP.But I’m seriously cheesed that they released that six-film set just a year after releasing the first four films in what looks now to be nothing but a crass cash grab.Watching the Special Longer Version is interesting. It’s pretty clear that the stuff that was added back in is there purely because they needed a longer runtime. The overwhelming majority of them are at best unnecessary and at worst detract from whatever scene they’re tacked on to. I totally get why they weren’t in either the theatrical release or the Director’s Cut. But it’s absolutely fascinating to have it as an artifact, especially an artifact that looks every bit as gorgeous as the two “proper” versions.
