It’s been nearly two years since we last saw the silver-haired weirdos of House Targaryen cause mischief and kiss their blood relatives, and every day since then, the Freefolk of television viewers have prayed for more. The Many-Faced God has heard you. Deadline reports that House Of The Dragon will return to HBO and Max this June.

The news comes out of the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom conference in San Francisco. Besides being the place for breaking House Of The Dragon news, the conference is where investors and executives learn about how tech companies will shoehorn AI onto platforms in the near future. During a Q&A, HBO’s streaming chief, JB Perrette, said that the show would be among several tentpole series to return a little early. (No, probably not The Last Of Us). The logjam of projects disrupted by last year’s WGA and SAG strikes hasn’t broken, and the release date shuffle continues.

Previously, HBO had anticipated the show returning later in the year. As noted by Deadline, HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys anticipated the show’s premiere was coming later in the summer. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said it would be out “next quarter” during last month’s earnings call. But as with most things in Westeros, things don’t turn out as expected. Just ask Ned Stark.

But that’s not all. HBO and Max (but certainly not HBO Max) subscribers will get even more Game Of Thrones in the next few years. Aside from the myriad spin-offs floating in development, including Jon Snow, Ten Thousand Ships, and The Golden Empire, HBO says that Game Of Thrones: A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is coming next year. We can’t wait to start squeezing that title into headlines.

Briefly thought I was looking at the Witcher when I scrolled down the front page to see this image.

I’m just glad they’ve still got the Rubbermaid contract to supply the wigs.

One thing I’m very interested in if this show goes the distance is how they’ll deal with a certain major development with House Stark that only occurs after the main action of the Dance of Dragons has finished. You kind of can’t leave the most popular GoT family’s biggest role in the story out of it, but trying to integrate it into the main body of the show’s conflict would be tricky as hell.

Well, Cregan Stark appears in S2 and they filmed Winterfell scenes so they’re already including Stark stuff.

    • captain-splendid-av says:

Well, they’ve cast the role. Done right, The Hour Of The Wolf would make a nice series finale.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

I’d bet money they’re going to lean heavily into the “unfounded rumors” that one of Rhaenyra’s kids secretly boned or married a Stark girl. I don’t remember the details but they need some actual plot to cover at Winterfell. Personally the only thing I want from season two is the most badass dragon in the whole series. The mighty SHEEPSTEALER.

The Dunk and Egg limited series is titled “A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight”. is This is because Hedge Knight is a short story/novella that is being adapted here, and it was collected with other stories in a volume called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which was also used as the title of an episode of the original GOT series due to related themes (and at least one related character). Presumably, if it does well, HBO will eventually produce “A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Sworn Sword” and so on. AV Club writers keep insisting there’s a GOT included as well, but I haven’t seen that anywhere else on the internet including George RR Martin’s website. So that’s not accurate.

House of the Dragon isn’t called Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon either but as seen from the preview of S2 in this article, they still denote it above the title. I think it’s fair to assume WBD thinks the average viewer is too dumb to realize these shows are connected without outright stating it.

I watched half of the first season and suddenly realized, “Holy shit, I’m bored.”  And then I stopped.

       Congratulations

    • jizbam-av says:

I read the first half of your comment and suddenly realized…

    • tvcr-av says:

You should watch the second half and see if you’re still bored. Then you can tell us on the next article.

    • kaiserserser-av says:

I mean the show had incredibly high viewership ratings, but I’m sure the millions of people who finished the season are idiots and you were the only smart one who realized the show was secretly boring 🙂

    • misovroom-av says:

I didn’t watch the second half. I realized right before the time skip that I was watching an array of unlikable characters make stupid decisions, which is exactly the opposite of what makes ASOIAF so interesting.

When a season two comes out, I usually binge it along with the season one. I bet when I do that with HOD, I’ll be like “I don’t remember any of this”. It was something I watched, but didn’t, if that makes sense.

    • drkschtz-av says:

It definitely didn’t have the spark that early GoT had

    • akabrownbear-av says:

Honestly that’s fine – not every show is for everyone. But why bother reading articles about the show and commenting on it?

  • newusername-thanksgizmodo-av says:

I only made it halfway through season 1. Two or three episodes in a row where I have no idea what was going on because I was completely distracted by trying to figure out how to actually see ANYTHING! We could hear voices but the screen was mostly black with some weird slightly less black shapes kinda moving.Loved Game of Thrones but just can’t get past this.

    Let’s go dragons and incest!

I’m off shows and have been for a while. Just really like watching movies now. This is the exception. Can’t wait. Cancelled HBO subscription….cancelled.

Ever since I read Mo Ryan’s book, Burn It Down, I can’t read Casey Bloys name without shuddering. (He has a physically abusive record against women.)

  • dalunar-av says:

My feeble memory doesnt remember the first season.. Guess I know what i’m doing now. Thats the issue with these long breaks, atleast for me.. I have the memory of a park squirrel.  Oh well, HBO gets more streams from me I guess. 🙂

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

I think it’s made worse by all the time jumps and actor changes. I have trouble remembering what happened too.

    • nooyawkah-av says:

Often with these cable shows I have to rewatch the last episode of the previous season.  Too often they take loooong breaks in between and the writers strike made everything even longer.

      • dalunar-av says:

I generally go find a re-cap of the season on YouTube..  I found thats the best way.  Although something like Masters of the Air, I just had to re-watch.

  • billix0-av says:

I just hope they continue with the first season’s style of being completely devoid of any humor or levity with every single character being self-serious to a fault. And the only time anyone should even come close to smiling is when they’re about to mutilate or kill a close relative. Also please introduce 20 more blond characters with variations of the Rha-, Var-, and Ae- names. They’re all really distinctive and easy to keep track of.
