House Of The Dragon’s first season was a lot of setup: introducing the characters, their place in established Westerosi lore, and watching them turn their relationships into warring factions. But when Aemond’s dragon kills Rhaenyra’s son Luke (with Aemond’s culpability and intentions somewhat up for debate), the difference of opinion over who should sit on The Iron Throne turns far more personal and furious. The Greens and the Blacks are headed for full, all-out war.

The first, brief look at HotD’s second season picks up where we left off, opening on the image of a livid, heartbroken Rhaenyra. The clip is truly a teaser, with a quick look at most everyone in the main cast, and without a whole lot of information about the plot other than stuff you probably expected based on how the last season ended. “War will be fought, many will die, and the victor will ascend to the throne,” Alicent Hightower tells us, and it’s pretty hard to argue with that statement. “There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin, and no war so bloody as a war between dragons,” Princess Rhaenys intones. Hey, when you’re right, you’re right.

Outside of the teaser, HBO announced a whole slew of new cast additions; Clinton Liberty will appear as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf, Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne. The teaser also reaffirms the loose release date of summer 2024, which had previously been announced last month.

I’m being slightly cynical here, but does Warner still have control over HBO products? Might this get shelved for a quick tax break after being complete?

    • captain-splendid-av says:

Nah, the GRMM universe is a merch juggernaut.  HoD is safe since it’s a loss leader.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

Has that happened to a show? I thought it was just movies. I’m no expert, but I would imagine by shelving a theatrical release you can actually claim you lost income and guesstimate an amount and for some stupid reason get a tax credit. It’s harder probably to say “more people would have subscribed to our streaming service if we had this content, give us money.”

Off the top of my head, I know Zaslav and Co. shelved Minx right after it wrapped filming for its second season. It hadn’t finished post-production yet, but all the photography was done. The show got rescued by Starz, which bought the second season.

        • kbroxmysox2-av says:

Thankfully too, as season 2 was great. How Zaslav saw a critical hit which had pretty good ratings as a ‘let’s shelve’ is so questionable but given it was very much a show about the female gaze, I shouldn’t be surprised. But to be fair, that’s probably because I’m missing Zaslav’s courage to be creatively bankrupt.

        • badkuchikopi-av says:

Was that for a tax break though, or just avoiding having to pay royalties and stuff? My understanding at least with Batwoman was that they couldn’t sell the thing to anyone else or release it at all.

Not a chance. Game of Thrones is HBO’s flagship franchise – they still probably get to set their own budget to some extent, and I doubt this will be the only spin-off series.

      • tarst-av says:

No they are still moving forward with that Jon Snow spinoff no one wants.

        • iambrett-av says:

AKA “Kit Harrington has free time because Game of Thrones didn’t launch any of its main actors into A-lister movies and TV status”. On the other hand, we’ve got a “Voyages of the Sea Snake” spin-off series in development that sounds cool as hell.

          • tarst-av says:

It’s weird to think about for sure. I guess Richard Madden has had some decent work on others series, but everyone probably associates him with The Eternals and leaves it there. WHICH Kit Harrington was also immemorably in.Not even Gwendoline Christie has been as prolific as she probably deserves to be. And Peter Dinklage is stuck narrating cheesy Netflix shows about mobsters and cults…

          • bio-wd-av says:

I haven’t seen Michelle Farley in ages, Maise Williams is a bit hard to find. Lady who played Sansa is basically best known now for personal drama. Tormund is basically a no show everywhere, Emelia Clark has the worst agent.  Fuck me it really is a cursed cast.

          • tarst-av says:

Tormund was in Cocaine Bear! And he might have an illustrious career selling lawn care products.

          • bio-wd-av says:

Oh shit he was in Cocaine Bear.  I also remember travalog commercials a few years back.  Colorful fella.

          • iambrett-av says:

Granted, the core cast probably all made enough money off of it (plus residuals) and convention appearances that they can basically work at will. Or maybe not? The residuals are good, but HBO might have gotten them on a seven-year contract type of thing like what used to be common.

    • kman3k-av says:

      That’s just a silly thought/comment.

  • dirtside-av says:

Well, at least they decided to keep it as desaturated and colorless as the first season. Who exactly is it in Hollywood that keeps saying, “You know, what people really want to look at is dark, ugly visuals”?

    • hulk6785-av says:

And, it’s up to us to adjust our TV screens because they can’t be bothered to film it to where anyone anywhere can watch it.  Because, God forbid, they actually do their jobs right.

      • gaith-av says:

Sitcoms are meant to be watched on TV screens. Prestige TV like this is meant to be projected in an otherwise dark room. That said, it was still fairly drab-looking that way, which doesn’t much inspire me to stick with it.

    • bio-wd-av says:

This drove me up a wall with Napoleon.  We aren’t aiming for historical accuracy so don’t tell me dark blue and grey filters are for accuracy.  These eras were actually stupidly colorful.  Look up any image from The War of the Roses era and everyone is like a goddamn peacock.  Imagine going ah I cannot accept colorful outfits, but dragons that’s okay.

Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark

    Finally.

    • captain-splendid-av says:

      Real dads don’t consume fiction.

      • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

        There’s always another WW2 documentary.

      • dirtside-av says:

As a dad, I can confirm, at least on the literary side: I’m finding written fiction less and less interesting, in favor of history (though not primarily military history, so I might not be a Real Dad™). For visual media, though, I still don’t really like documentaries, and virtually everything I watch is fiction.

  • badkuchikopi-av says:

I forget, which one turned out to be Sauron?

    • aej6ysr6kjd576ikedkxbnag-av says:

This is House of the Dragon. They’re all evil: not fun evil like Sauron, just heartless dickheads.

  • masshysteria-av says:

I’m getting my fantasy show fix from Dimension 20 now. Affecting, hilarious storylines improvised by players and characters I actually like.

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

No war so bloody as a war between dragons?
I’da thought dragon fire would cauterize pretty effectively before blood got spilled.

    • dr-boots-list-av says:

It’s actually a very ashy war. Dry and itchy.

    • thegobhoblin-av says:

The blood is from all the people trampling each other to death trying to run away from the dragons, which causes more fatalities than the dragons themselves.

      • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

That’s more blunt impact injuries than lacerations though.

        • thegobhoblin-av says:

At first, but once the panic really sets in people get stomped to a pulp. It’s like making wine in the old country. That, and a lot of fleeing people stab each other hoping the dragons will get preoccupied picking off the wounded.

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

            You’ve really thought this through.
Certainly more than the writers of HotD.

          • thegobhoblin-av says:

Thank you. I’ve run a lot of D&D and these kinds of details come up a distressing amount of the time.

  • bio-wd-av says:

Honest question.  Does anyone remember what happened last season?  Hell when was the last season?  I know it’s post Covid, I wanna say 2022, but it feels like forever.

    • badkuchikopi-av says:

This is probably because of all the jumping ahead in time. The season covered like twenty years. I have trouble remembering exactly what happened too, and I read the fake history thing it was based on.

      • bio-wd-av says:

Yeah I own Fire and Blood and World of Ice and Fire and umm yep still at a loss.

      • yellmasterprime-av says:

Also because it just wasn’t very interesting or memorable.I dunno what “it” is, but Game of Thrones had “it” and House of the Dragon doesn’t.

        • badkuchikopi-av says:

Personally I thought HotD was very interesting. Mostly in a “I wonder how they’re going to adapt this” kinda way. I dunno I thought it was really good mostly.

        • bio-wd-av says:

In a blunter sense, yes can’t argue there.  It seemed to just rush through events and things occasionally happen without any good reason.  Like the one guy getting murdered at a wedding, that didn’t make any goddamn sense and you can’t even say its from the book because its not.

    • kman3k-av says:

Really? It wasn’t even a very complicated plot/story. Yes, there was a time jump but….

  • iambrett-av says:

Pretty sure there was a brief showing of either Blood or Cheese in there. Strong candidate for the ugliest part of the season premiere, if they include it.

Hot-D Part 2: More Hot, Deeper Ds

  • clog-wog-av says:

Is it just me or does that last slow-motion shot of the dragon flying overhead suddenly look like really cheap CGI? Have there been budget cuts?
