Reese Witherspoon is getting pretty serious about the streaming TV business, having already sold two shows to Apple’s needlessly mysterious streaming service, and now Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Hulu has given a straight-to-series order to her adaptation of Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere. The eight-episode series comes from Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, and Casual writer Liz Tigelaar, with Witherspoon and Washington both starring—making this the first major TV role for Washington after the upcoming end of Scandal.
As explained in a press release, Little Fires Everywhere is about “the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives,” and it all ties into “the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster.” There’s also arson and a “controversial adoption,” both of which can be pretty entertaining. Entertainment Weekly also notes that Witherspoon chose the original book version for her book club back in September shortly before picking up the rights, so she’s been eager to get this made for a while now.
