To begin the new year with something new, Hulu has added some under-the-radar movies as well as a few big-budget favorites from the past few years to its streaming library. Deliver Us is a religious horror film about a woman about to give birth to twins: a Messiah and the Antichrist. In the vigilante action film The Baker, Ron Perlman stars as the aging titular character trying to protect his granddaughter from gangsters. Abigail Breslin stars in the period drama Miranda’s Victim based on the true story of Trish Weir and the origin of the Miranda rights. Also coming to Hulu in January 2024 is Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland in Uncharted, the thrilling documentary Beyond Utopia, plus All Fun And Games, The System, Rare Objects, Self Reliance, King Richard, and more.

    Recommending Uncharted is.. a choice.
Best thing I can say is it’s an example that there can be good things in a movie while the movie itself isn’t.

I’d say it also helps if you completely separate the game from the movie in your head. I’d say it was a pretty fun movie that bore a remote resemblance to the games, but contained none of the characters from the games. Not the worst way to spend a Saturday afternoon while you’re cleaning the house. Or whatever busywork you do on a Saturday afternoon before you go have real fun.

I wasn’t thinking about the game. But while seeing two old sailing ships swinging through the air under helicopters sounds good, even fun, I just can’t say those are the first words that come to mind if I had to describe the movie.

I never played the games, so I went in expecting a run-of-the-mill Indy/Tomb Raider adventure movie. It was… fine? No idea how close to the games it is, but it was an okay way to breeze through a couple of hours as long as you don’t want to put much thought into it. My only complaint (having been generally aware of the games) is that the two leads seem completely and totally miscast. Wahlberg gives off such “I am biting my tongue, but I should be the main character, this is fucking stupid” vibes that its a wonder he was cast. And I like Tom Holland, but he comes off as pretty flat – not really any charm, or even the sense he could handle himself in a fight.

Nobody asked her about her truly career-defining role, far exceeding any movie or album of hers? I speak of course, of the magical dumpster-living singing waif in the 2003 episode of Clone High, Snowflake Day. Edit — Sorry, wrong article.

After slapping Chris Rock onstage at the Academy Awards, Will Smith returned to the stage to accept his Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Richard Williams, the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, in the biographical sports drama King Richard. Weird way to start a recommendation:  “Will Smith delivers a performance so good they let him smack Chris Rock at the Academy Awards!”
