According to Deadline, famous handsome cat-man Idris Elba and famous Stranger Things kid Caleb McLaughlin are set to star together in Concrete Cowboys, a movie inspired by the Fletcher Street Stables—a “Black urban horsemanship community which has existed in Philadelphia for more than 100 years.” The film, which is also inspired by Greg Neri’s novel Ghetto Cowboy and will be directed by Ricky Staub (his feature debut), is about a 15-year-old kid who is sent to live with his estranged father in Philadelphia. McLaughlin is playing the kid and Elba is playing the dad, with the kid eventually discovering Philadelphia’s “vibrant urban cowboy subculture.”

Elba, meanwhile, has never ever played a character remotely resembling a cowboy before, so hopefully McLaughlin isn’t the only one gets to do some lassoing and gunslinging. (The stables are meant to be a haven away from violence, so we’re not sure why that word in particular came to mind, but it’s probably best not to think about it too hard.)

this movie sounds promising if it isn’t Lifetime Channel stuff, plus the inevitable Old Town Road tie-in
This club is apparently based out of the same area of Philly where a mob beat a man to death for stealing a car that had two kids in it a few weeks ago.

Didn’t Idris Elba play a cowboy-ish character in that terrible Dark Tower movie no one remembers?

Has Idris Elba made any good movies? I don’t mean that as a slight. I love The Wire. I think Luther is great. He’s fine in the Marvel movies, but are there any movies that he stars in that are good?

Beasts of No Nation? I didn’t care for Pacific Rim, but that movie has a lot of fans.

Beasts of No Nation is a stunning movie. That lead kid gives one of the best youth performances I’ve ever seen. Netflix really, really fucked up that release.

Star Trek Beyond and American Gangster ain’t bad.

I liked him in Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s Little Girls, but I know that’s not for everyone. It’s a fair question. He’s a pretty great tv actor, whose best movie stuff have been in supporting roles. His big starring vehicles have resulted in some mostly mediocre films, so far. Hopefully this breaks the mold.

Waaaaait a second….. this just sounds like an excuse to submit Old Town Road for Academy consideration. Before we’re finished here, OTR will join the pantheon of EGOTs. Mark my words.

At last we can get to see Idris shovelling horse shit off a road!

Jjournalist here says Idris Elba has never done anything even slightly resembling a cowboy!? Really? Just because it wasnt a great movie does not mean the dark tower with him playing the gunslinger never happened. Haha. Do your research before you say dumb shit:)

    • metonymoussum-av says:

Well, this could have been a dig at Dark Tower, where everything was unrecognizable and also terrible. I’m not sure we could say The Gunslinger was much of anything in the movie.

  • gingerbreadjeff-av says:

There is a 0% chance Old Town Road doesn’t get used in this trailer.

There’s been a lot in the local news about this movie as they’re filming here now in Philly. I used to see guys riding horses in North Philly when I was in college so I’m kind of interested in learning more about it. I never realized it was a 100 year old community.

Andre 3000 gonna be in this as well.
