No surprises here, Inside Out 2 easily dominated the box office in its second weekend with $100 million in ticket sales. Not only that, in just eight days it’s become the biggest movie of the year, according to Variety. Garnering $355 million domestic and $724 million worldwide, the family-friendly animated film has already surpassed the total box office for Dune 2 ($282 million domestic, $711 million worldwide). At this rate, Inside Out 2 is tracking towards $1 billion, making it the first movie to meet that mark since last summer’s Barbie sensation. This is, of course, a triumph for Pixar’s new strategy for sequels and “mass appeal.”

Per Variety, Inside Out 2 has made history, albeit obscurely, for second-weekend box office triumphs. It’s the seventh-best second weekend in box office history (behind only big blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens). It’s the best second weekend for an animated film ever—including its predecessor Inside Out, which made $90 million in its second weekend. The emotion-based adventure is a ray of light in an otherwise disappointing theatrical summer season, reportedly shrinking the year-to-date deficit from 23.8% to 21%.

A few other films held strong at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Bad Boys: Ride Or Die came in at number two on its third weekend in theaters. Other family-friendly fare like The Garfield Movie and IF also remain in the top ten. And Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes retains its crown, coming in at a solid number five after seven weeks in theaters.

As for new fare, The Bikeriders starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, and Jodie Comer opened at number three in the box office with $10 million. That’s not bad for a relatively smaller film, but it’s not great for a movie with a budget of $35 million, according to Variety. The Exorcism starring Russell Crowe opened at number seven, and June Squibb’s new granny action thriller Thelma took the number eight spot.

Down at number 14, Kinds Of Kindness raked in $350,000 at just five locations. Variety notes this is reportedly the year’s best-limited opening and highest per-screen average to date. The film’s success in this modest arena is likely boosted by the Oscar wins from Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone’s previous collaboration, Poor Things. Kinds Of Kindness, which opens in 500 more theaters next weekend and then worldwide on July 3, also stars Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe, Hong Chau, and more.
