It’s dueling propagandists in the second Hunger Games: Mockingjay teaser

Film Features Film

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I publicity blitzkrieg continues. This brand new teaser trailer keeps with the propaganda theme of the posters and first teaser trailer, but adds a rebellious twist. It opens in the familiar white hall where President Snow (Donald Sutherland) made his first Capitol TV address. He’s once again flanked by Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), as well as a dozen Stormtrooper-esque guards and a heavily made-over Johanna (Jena Malone). Unlike the first trailer—which played as a straight propaganda piece—this time Snow’s message is interrupted by tech genius BeeTee (Jeffrey Wright) who has pirated the channel from District 13 to release the message “The Mockingjay Lives.”

The “Mockingjay” refers to the image Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) adopts as a symbol of revolution, and nods to the way the final book in the Hunger Games series is focused on Katniss’ role as a propaganda tool. The teaser puts new viewers in the position of a disoriented Capitol citizen, while dropping just enough tidbits to keep book fans interested. There will likely be several more of these clips released (this one is titled “Unity,” and Snow also mentioned “Prosperity” and “Sacrifice” in his initial message) before the full trailer finally debuts. The film itself hits theaters November 21.
