It’s Rumor Time: Angela Bassett could be Bryan Fuller’s new Starfleet captain

Aux Features TV

Check your watches, folks: It’s Rumor Time, when today’s dreams and wishes become the fertile soil in which tomorrow’s disappointments might grow. Today’s rumor comes courtesy of newly minted Star Trek showrunner Bryan Fuller, who’s so far said very little about what his take on the Federation and Starfleet might entail.

That hasn’t always been the case, though, with sites like Blavity digging up an old interview Fuller did with Den Of Geek back in 2013, when the Hannibal creator was first being considered for a possible run at the Star Trek universe. At the time, Fuller expressed a desire to skip over featuring the Enterprise—leaving it and its adventures for the then-J.J. Abrams-directed movies—and instead focusing on the Reliant, the ship Khan captures and uses against Kirk in The Wrath Of Khan. Even more interesting than those plot ideas, though, was who Fuller saw as his preferred candidate for the captain’s chair: Angela Bassett, possibly with the assistance of Rosario Dawson.

“I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that’s who I would love to have, you know Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show.”

Of course, Fuller said this stuff three years ago, back when it seemed like he’d been passed over for the Trek TV job, so those past-musings should probably be taken with a healthy serving of salt. Still, both Bassett and Dawson have shown themselves to be game for TV work in recent years—Bassett as one of Ryan Murphy’s company of recurring American Horror Story actors, and Dawson as one of the lynchpins of Netflix’s mini-Marvel empire—so it’s always possible that the Fuller of the past will get the future he’d envisioned all those years ago.
