Well, you can’t say director Christopher Landon doesn’t have a vision. With Happy Death Day and its sequel, the filmmaker mined a comedic concept for horror (without excising the comedic component). Now, he’s doing it again. Freaky takes the body-swap gimmick popularized by Freaky Friday and asks what might happen if a bullied teen girl switched bodies with a hulking serial killer. The bullies get theirs, that’s what happens—at least according to a new trailer dropped by Blumhouse today.

Blockers’ Kathryn Newton stars as that bullied teen, while Vince Vaughn plays the knife-wielding Butcher, who apparently wields a “mystical dagger” capable of triggering the supernatural mixup. Newton’s beleaguered Millie, trapped in the body of a middle-aged man, has 24 hours to get her body back before the switch becomes permanent. Still, that leaves plenty of time for the Butcher to flex his skills, which haven’t dulled within the teen girl’s body. Connor Roy, for example, appears to get his balls sawed off.

Speaking of balls getting sawed off, this trailer looks to be positively brimming with spoilers—in this case, teens getting comically slaughtered—so be aware of that before hitting play. Sometimes it’s fun to not know who dies!

Despite being perfect for the Halloween season, Freaky is coming out on Friday the 13 of November (likely due to all of this coronavirus business). But, hey, fear is a year-round business.

Reading the graffiti as a thought bubble is making me happy. I didn’t realize Vaughn was a James Joyce fan.

  • miiier-av says:

This sounds interesting — Vaughn has a imposing physical presence so I bet he could have a lot of fun “being” a high school girl and of course slaughtering high schoolers is the kind of anti-Zoomer content my generation craves.

Now that he’s got the middle age spread and has bulked up, he’s definitely a more intimidating guy.

There used to be a lot of comparisons between him and Vincent D’Onofrio back in the day, and now that Vince has really swelled up, there’s one more comparison!

I love this entire thread. Everyone’s pitching these ideas like Blumhouse ABSOLUTELY wouldn’t pick up these ideas if well written.I’d workshop “Trap”, though, as a title. “Trapped”, maybe. Negative connotations in the current era.

So you’re saying any Frenchman will do, then?

        • augustintrebuchon-av says:

75% of Americans believe in God, under 50% of French do. So the bigoted one may not be who you think.

          • stopmeantome-av says:

Easy Augustin, i was 110% just joking. i’m something like 90% French-Canadian in ethnicity.

          • augustintrebuchon-av says:

And I’m 100% French. And I still loathe 99% of them. But white flag jokes and the like I don’t find that funny. YMMV!

          • stopmeantome-av says:

I wholeheartedly agree. The ignorance about France’s role in WWII is especially infuriating. Anyone in the US, ESPECIALLY, has no right to pull that bullshit right now, whilst taking it up the ass from Fascist racist alt-right lunacy without question.

          • augustintrebuchon-av says:

I’m far less positive than you about that. France was, for the most part, an actively collaborationist country from 1940 to 1944. That it is considered a victor of the war is… arguable. That, on that basis, it is a permanent member of the UN Security Council is laughable. (That there are permanent, veto-wielding members is even worse, no doubt.)But, yes, the US is not in the best position to lecture anyone else on the planet, especially when it comes to human rights. If Jim Crow and the need for a BLM today weren’t reason enough, its routine, continued, active support – if not outright installing – of disreputable regimes for the better part of the past 150 years would show how baffling such public pose is.

          • augustintrebuchon-av says:

Well, the reality is that the Resistance represented 1% (until August 1944 when it shot to 99%…), active collaborationists roughly the same number, and the rest of the population were simply human, i.e., they were simply waiting to see who would win. We’ll see what all our neighbors will do from the morning of Nov 4 onwards!

I’m curious how Vince Vaughn fit into Blumhouse’s budget

    • batista_thumbs_up-av says:

Vaughn does a lot of indie work these days, so I imagine he’s got more than enough money to be at a point to just do what makes him happy and what he finds interesting no matter the payout.

    • galdarn-av says:

I think it’s because he’s Vince Vaughn, not some expensive A-list actor.

  • fast-k-av says:

I have a not-so-secret love of body switching as a trope, so yes, I will definitely be checking this out. I also have a very public fear of Covid, so I will be waiting to see when and what streaming options I can see it with.

    • callmeshoebox-av says:

I share your love but with a dash of overthinking things, like why is The Butcher so good at applying makeup?

      • fast-k-av says:

Some men wear make-up. Also there’s YouTube. I’m a lady but I didn’t really wear make-up growing up, but experimented with little touches here and there in my 20s and used the internet as a reference.

        • callmeshoebox-av says:

I dig that but the Butcher doesn’t seem like the type to wear makeup, but then again you never know. And if he’s only in her body for less than 24 hours he’s really good at picking up YT makeup tutorials. Did I mention I tend to overthink things?

  • franknstein-av says:

I liked Happy Deathday, but I can see this director’s shtick of turning a tired comedy trope into a horror comedy get old quite fast.

  • thezmage-av says:

I think you mean it’s a horror twist on Rob Schneider’s “The Hot Chick”

    • stopmeantome-av says:

i hate Rob Schneider and his *shudder* films, but I must say, the ‘gay gay gay gay’ part in this movie still makes me laugh, even though it’s so so so very un-PC.

      • thezmage-av says:

Don’t think I’ll ever rewatch that film, but I do remember it being a lot funnier than a movie like that ever should be

  • khil01-av says:

I really liked the Happy Death Day movies, so I’m excited for this, it looks a like a fun romp.

  • igotsuped-av says:

I’m sorry, but it’s against Hollywood law to use the body swap trope for a premise other than two very different people spending time in each other’s shoes to learn how hard their lives are/how they aren’t so different.

  • jackstark211-av says:

    I’m down for this.

  • teageegeepea-av says:

This serial killer seems rather poorly adjusted in his ordinary life, so I wouldn’t expect him to be able to fit in well as a teen girl.I liked Happy Death Day, but I thought the sequel leaned too far away from horror, and since I’m not a fan of Back to the Future 2 relying on that didn’t help either.

  • miked1954-av says:

I Believe his proper title is ‘Trumptard right winger Vince Vaughn.’

  • returning-the-screw-av says:

Wow, actually looks great. Though I really hate the really hot girl is somehow a nerd and bullied trope. That shit doesn’t happen. Unless they made some really big social faux pas but even then it’s unlikely to be the level these movies make it out to be.

    • polkablues-av says:

I like how they barely even tried to make Kathryn Newton look unattractive. They put her in baggy clothes, mussed up her hair a little, and said “Fuck it, I give up.”

      • stopmeantome-av says:

Like, maybe this is gross, but it’d be much more believable/timely/compelling to have her be a ‘fallen’ hot girl who ‘slutted’ it up with ‘too many’ guys and has lost her popular social circle.

        Because THAT shit happens.
