Euphoria will have to “Benjamin Button” Jacob Elordi unless there’s a time jump

Despite the fact that some kids will have experienced almost all of high school since its second season, Euphoria is allegedly returning for a third round of bathtub hiding and hot tub puking some time in 2025. We’ll believe it when we see it, quite frankly, as will Jacob Elordi, who recently addressed the series’ long summer vacation in an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

“I don’t know, do you know?” Elordi, who’s already a major movie star and will likely be an even bigger one when the season airs (if it airs), responded when asked about the production’s filming timeline. “I hope it’s soon, or they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something,” he added. “I’m going to have a bad back walking down the hallway, you know?” Elordi, who plays Nate Jacobs, the troubled and violent object of both Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) and Maddy’s (Alexa Demie) affections, will be either 27 or 28 when the season finally drops—far too old to (believably) participate in pithy little high school games like having your dirty laundry aired out in front of the entire school in play form or bringing a gun to your ex-girlfriend’s house.

To compensate for the fact that its stars look increasingly like they’d have no idea what the hell a Stanley cup or a “rizzler” is, the show is rumored to be toying with the idea of a pretty significant time jump between seasons two and three. Elordi is on board. “I’m assuming that we’ll have to go forward, otherwise it’s going to seem like a weird bit,” he said.

Whatever they decide to do about the timeline, Euphoria’s writers will also have to contend with a tragic loss in the show’s upcoming outing. Angus Cloud, who became an immediate fan-favorite for his portrayal of affable drug dealer Fezco, died this past summer from an accidental overdose at the age of 25. While series creator Sam Levinson and Cloud’s former cast-mates have memorialized him on social media in recent months, the team behind one of his first (and sadly last) major features, Freaky Tales, got the chance to remember the actor when the film premiered at Sundance last night.

“We felt really lucky to have gotten him in the movie. He cared so much about the role,” said co-director Anna Boden (via The Hollywood Reporter). “Even in the most tense moments on set, he would bring this different energy and help break the tension. He ends up bringing this very specific, very Angus energy to the role. He totally transforms it from something that could be a very average role that you don’t think that much about into something that has a very specific life to it.”

“He was just a breath of fresh air,” she added. “I know a lot of people on the movie felt that way—touched by his presence.”

Angus Cloud is also in the upcoming Abigail, which could be fun.

These long waits between seasons squander all their momentum (strike notwithstanding) and fail to capitalize on their casts’ growing celebrity. Half these people will be too busy or too expensive by the time they get the show going again. Streaming and prestige TV are increasingly operating under a “strike while the iron is ice cold” philosophy. It’s really weird to watch.

One of the big issues is that movie studios are trying to mint the next generations of super stars (since the ones that we know and love are, to a crazy extent, 40+), and unfortunately, many of that next generation are coming from super-popular and relatively popular TV shows. This is both a boon and a risk for those actors, because while movies can often pay more and open up your schedule to allow for greater freedom, you also run the risk of leaving your hot TV show too early and if/when your movie career sputters, you might not have a hot TV show to come back to.

You can also point to the fact that many prestige TV shows are getting shorter and shorter seasons, and at the end of the day, people wanna work and make money.

Euphoria should quit while they’re ahead.

didn’t elordi just diss the show because he’s getting movies now?  maybe he died on the way back to his home planet?

Maybe it’s just Zendaya not trying to do too much, and Hunter Schaffer does seem to be getting more but I’m a bit bothered that the two currently most ‘commercial leads’(Zendaya was supporting in Spidey) are the two white cis-gendered actors of Euphoria, even than I think Zendaya and Hunter Schaffer are miles above both Jacob Elordi and Sydney Sweeney in terms of ability. Elordi is fine(though nothing fantastic), while Sweeney can do deadpan well like in White Lotus, outside of that, she just seems sleepy. How Elordi is getting an SNL gig before Zendaya did is….I don’t know…

i think elordi just had one of those massive years where everything lined up, but he’s definitely got a superstar quality outside of just acting chops (he’s also very tall and people love that).zendaya had a big movie that was pushed back because of the strike, but she’s far and away still the biggest star. she’s taking a page out of the rihanna book and just chilling, i think. too big to fail.schaffer just announced that kojima game, which will be a pretty huge thing.everybody’s working, they’re just on different paths.

He definitely is tall and very very hot, so can’t say I don’t ge where his sucscess is coming from(and I do think he’s a pretty decent actor, and gave the Nate role much more pathos than was on paper). I just think Zendaya and Schaffer are so so so good that I want them to be HUGE, and given SNL and on every talk show. I guess Zendaya probably like “No thanks” to movies like that rom-com Sweeney did, but yeah, I just think those two are some of the best Hollywood has to offer.

        • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

yeah i mean like i said i just think elordi had a particularly nuts 2023. z’s got a huge movie in dune 2 and a sexy, buzzy smaller movie, so i think 2024 is a lock for her anyway. schaffer’s got lots of time but i think that hunger games movie was a smart call, and again that kojima game is massive.

I have no horse in this race, having watched Saltburn for Ewan Mitchell, but Elordi is wildly charismatic onscreen. I’m not sure he’s a true student of the craft of acting (his Saltburn role wasn’t particularly demanding if you get the screen presence right) but he’s insanely watchable.

      • kbroxmysox2-av says:

Yeah, I don’t mean to say he’s a bad actor. He’s not! I think he makes Nate more human than he’d ever be in a lesser actor’s hands(because Levinson’s writing is trash elevated by the actors). And he’s a great looking guy. I guess it was more in felt like I haven’t seen much of Zendaya this year and Hunter Schaffer I want to say in more, and this year was big for both him and Sweeney, the two big white cis-gendered actors of the show, so it was like “ugh, of course”But Adam J made a good point was that it was just how 2023 lined up. Hopefully Schaffer, who I think is so immensely talented, watchable and beautiful, gets to at least where Sweeney is…And I honestly think Zendaya is one of the best actresses of her generation. She makes MJ, who let’s face it isn’t the most well written role, much more dynamic than she’d ever be. And her work as Rue, despite the writing, is just phenomenal.

        • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

also, not that i disagree re: sweeney, but i do think it’s incredibly cool that her romcom that was initially written off ended up being a word-of-mouth hit. it’s just nice to see that happen with a movie haha.

Yeah, Angus Cloud didn’t die of an accidental overdose. That implies he took too much of the drug he’d intended to take. He was murdered, poisoned by a drug dealer who sold fentanyl disguised as 30m Oxycontins or Percocets. Only people in the throes of serious addiction willingly smoke, snort or ingest fentanyl and the majority of fentanyl overdoses are the result of thinking you’re taking something not unlike a Vicodin.

    • gfitzpatrick47-av says:

He was murdered, poisoned by a drug dealer who sold fentanyl disguised as 30m Oxycontins or Percocets.Low-level drug dealers have a huge disincentive to kill their customers, and the overwhelming majority of fentanyl related deaths involve people who intentionally moved to fentanyl from other opiods, or people who unsuspectingly ingested fentanyl that was cut into otherwise less-deadly opiods. In the latter case, the fentanyl is usually being added because you can use a significantly lower amount than other, less powerful opiods and have a greater return on your investment.

The unfortunate reality is that many opiod users and those addicted to opiods are moving specifically to fentanyl on a purely cost/effect basis. They can spend significantly less money on an opiod that’s significantly stronger, regardless of the increased risk. No different than when many 1970s-1980s cocaine users moved from powder to freebasing to then to crack. Lower cost + stronger high = increased demand.

I want to be clear: this is not to say that Angus Cloud was purposefully procuring fentanyl or fentanyl-laced products because he desired specifically that. However, you can’t discount the ever-increasing reality that the supply of fentanyl is increasing not just for financial factors on the side of the distributors and dealers, but also the demand on the side of the users.

As I said earlier, the only reason a drug dealer would knowingly sell fentanyl-laced products to someone who doesn’t want fentanyl is if they know there’s enough other fentanyl-based business to make up for the potential death of customer #1.

My thought exactly.  Ian Ziering was playing a high school student (not altogether convincingly, but still) at what, 32?
